Southeast, unbeaten in gymnastics competition this fall, claimed 18 qualifying spots for state level competition while winning the district meet at the Southeast gym Saturday night.

Coach Art Hillman's Knights, titlist at both the Trans-Nebraska Conference and Grand Island Invitational earlier in the season, piled up 104 points to 79 'a for second-place Northeast, which will have 15 chances to score at the state level. Though Southeast was favored, the Northeast team of coach Bob Heffelfinger made a sun for top honors midway through the competition when Larry West, Dean Strough and Duane West finished 1-2-4 on the trampoline. But defending state champion Jim Daniels of Southeast came back in the next event to capture the blue ribbon in his side horse specialty and then Scott Bloom, Bill Marshall and Jim Unger assured the district crown with a 1-2-3 finish on the high bar. Unger was the winner of the all-around title. Five performers, three from Lincoln High and a pair from Southeast enterd the special category in which they were scored in five of the seven events.

The top three qualified for the state meet, while the first i in each of the regular seven events will compete at a Cornhusker defensive tackle Larry Jacobson (75) makes it difficult for Kansas State quarterback Lynn Dickey (11) to see receivers in the right flat so the Wildcat signal caller fires a pass down the middle over center Steve Beyrle (51). On K-State's next play from scrimmage, Morock picked off another of Dickey's passes and returned it 43 yards for the TD, completing the nightmare for the Wildcats.

Nebraska's total offense figure of 361 coming against the Big Eight's best team in total defense with an average of having allowed only 284.9 yards per game, boosted the season yardage total for the Huskers to 4,217. This makes the 1970 team the best offensive team in Husker history, surpassing the 4,040 yards gained by the 1965 outfit. And the 51 points was against a Wildcat team that came into the game with the best record in the Big Eight in defense against scoring, having given up only 14.9 points per game in nine previous outings. Another Husker season record was set by Murtaugh, whose four unassisted tackles gave him a season total of 62 topping the record of 59 set by all-American Wayne Meylan in 1967. While the Huskers sewed up at least a share of.

the Big Eight title and likely made the Huskers No. 1 on the list of selection committees from the three major bowls Cotton, Orange and Sugar they still must defeat Oklahoma, which came from behind to score a 28-24 win over Kansas Saturday, in Lincoln to win the championship outright. The Huskers now stand at 6-0 in the league, 9-0-1 overall, while Oklahoma is 4-1 with Nebraska and Oklahoma State remaining on its schedule. Kansas State has wound up with Big Eight season with a 5-2 mark. The win also extended Nebraska's unbeaten streak to 17 in a row, third best on the Husker all-time chart.

attempt was wide and the Huskers held a 30-7 lead. On the first play after the kickoff, Dickey again found Blahak with a pass and this time the Husker defensive back from Columbus returned it 33 yards to the K-State 12. After two plays still left the Huskers at the 12, Tagge fired a strike to Schneiss, who was alone over the middle, for the TD with 58 seconds still remaining in the period. Rogers' kick made it 37-7. A fumble recovery by Husker defensive end John Adkins two plays later set up another NU touchdown.

Starting at the K-State 36, Tagge hit Ingles with a 14-yard later this week. Floor Exercise 1. George Nlmlc, LHi 2. Duane West, NEi 3. Jim Unger, SE; A.

From Page 1C contest, scoring on its first play from scrimmage and taking a 14-0 first quarter lead and a 21-7 halftime advantage. The plot for the K-State nightmare was set early when Nebraska linebacker and co-captain JerryVrartaugh picked off Dickey's first pass of the afternoon and carried it back 25 yards to the K-State 30.

Then on Nebraska's first offensive play, sophomore Johnny Rodgers took an inside handoff from Tagge and squirted 30 yards for the score with only 2:12 gone in the game. The Husker Black Shirt defensive unit was so superb that it allowed the visitors only one first down in the first quarter and they gave Kansas State that one by jumping offside. Meanwhile, the Huskers were putting another seven points on the board with a 48-yard drive highlighted by a 13-yard Tagge to Schneiss pass. A' Tagge keeper for 16 yards put the ball at the three from where Joe Orduna went over for the first of four touchdowns. The Husker senior, who carried the ball 27 times for 105 yards after fellow I-back Jeff Kinney was hurt early in the game, scored his other TDs on runs of 16, 1 and 2 yards.

But trailing 144), Kansas State pulled back into contention early in the second quarter when Mike Kuhn blocked a Jeff Hughes giving the Wildcats the ball at the NU 23. Set back twice by penalties, it took Kansas State six plays to score with Dickey hitting Mike Montgomery with an eight-yard pitch for the tally with 11:17 left' in the first half. But the Huskers stormed right back, driving 61 yards for a 21-7 margin with Tagge coming up with two big third down passes to tight end Jerry List to keep the drive alive. With a third and six at the NU 43, Tagge found List on a 12-yarder for a first down, then with a third and 13 at the K-State 35, he again hit List with a 19-yarder and a first down at the 16. Orduna then broke three tackles on his 16-yard scoring jaunt on the next play.

Moments later, Kansas State hopes suffered another blow when a Dickey to Montgomery pass in the end zone fell incomplete and Montgomery rushed upfield and grabbed back judge Wayne Cooley, who tossed his red flag and ejected Montgomery from the contest. After Rogers kicked a 23-yard field goal with 8:17 to go in the third quarter, Nebraska turned the game into a rout moments later, scoring twice within 59 seconds. With Kansas State threatening at the Nebraska 27, Blahak pirated a Dickey pass at the 17 and returned it 53 yards to the Kansas State 30. After Orduna raced for 14 and Tagge hit Guy Ingles for seven, Tagge handed off to Orduna four times and to Rodgers once to move the ball to the one. Season records set Saturday were most touchdown passes, 10 by Jerry Tagge, most unassisted tackles, 62 by Jerry Murtaugh and total offensive yardage at 4,217.

Joe Orduna's four touchdowns gave him a career total of 26, only two shy of Bobby Reynolds record. Bill Kosch's two pass interceptions giving him seven for the season leaves him only one away from tie-ing the season mark set by Dana Stephenson last year and the seven team interceptions Saturday tied the record of 27 in one season, also set last year. Nebraska's 20 first downs Saturday also tied the season mark of 228 set a year ago. Paul Rogers' six extra point kicks leaves him only one short of tieing the Big Eight record of 45 in one season, set by Bill Bell of Kansas in 19G8.
