1 omi ito. i'ogumu. iiSKCrS -'Standings Baltimore Takes Super Bowl Step Better Defense A split on the road at TCU and SMU over the weekend was disappointing, but not discouraging, to Nebraska basketball coach Joe Cipriano. "We played well enough to win both games," said Cipriano, "but we tired in the second half Saturday night." Cipriano noted that the weariness contributed to ineffective rebounding and defensive play. "I thought we could play better defense, but I think our poor Monday Night rebounding Saturday night was Nevada (1-2) Thomas (6-2) Wright (6-5) Scott (6-5) Nebraska (4-1) Riehl (65) Petersen (6-8) Jura (6-10) me oiggesi aisappoinuneiH, he said.

That's how coach Don McCafferty described the 20-14 victory his Baltimore Colts registered Sunday over the Buffalo Bills in National Football League action. The triumph gave the Colts, 1969 Super Bowl losers to the New York Jets, the championship of the American Conference East and one of the eight NFL playoff berths. The Colts joined the Oakland Raiders and the Minnesota Vikings on the list of division champions. The Raiders wrapped up the AFC West on Saturday with a 20-7 decision over Kansas City, defending Super Bowl titlists. Minnesota won the National Conference Central Division crown last week.

With only one more weekend of regular season action left, the NFC East and West and the AFC's Central Division races will go down to the wire. The New York Giants, behind Fran Tarkenton's three touchdown passes, joined Dallas as NFC East co-leader by thumping the St. Louis Cards 34-17 in one of Sunday's key games. Dallas was a 6-2 victor over Cleveland on Saturday. St.

Louis isn't out of the title picture, however, although the Cards dropped to third place in the NFC East. In Sunday's other games, Cincinnati's Bengals claimed sole possession of the AFC Central lead with a 30-20 beating of Houston; the Vikings crushed Boston 35-14; San Francisco remained on top of the NFC West with a 38-27 decision over New Orleans; Washington, with Larry Brown cracking the rushing barrier, defeated Philadelphia 24-6; Atlanta cooled Pittsburgh's AFC Central title hopes 27-16; Chicago blasted Green Bay 35-17; Miami remained in the playoff picture despite Baltimore's title-clinching triumph by downing the Jets 16-10 and the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers played to a 17-17 deadlock. touchdowns and ran for a third as the Vikings crushed Boston and former teammate Joe Kapp, now the Pats' signal caller. He scored one of the Washington touchdowns. Falcons 27, Steelers 16: Randy Johnson got his first start this season as Atlanta's quarterback and threw two touchdown strikes. The Steelers had four turnovers and were eliminated from the playoff picture with their loss. Bears 35, Packers 17: Jack Concannon had his finest day for Chicago, hurling four touchdown passes and running 15 yards for a fifth score.

Dick Gordon, leading pass catcher in the NFL, was on the receiving end of seven Concannon tosses. Two of Gordon's receptions were for touchdowns. Dolphins 16, Jets 10: The Miami victory boosted the Dolphins' playoff chances and hurt those of Kansas City. A Dolphin triumph over Buffalo next Sunday or even a tie would give Miami the best won-lost showing among AFC runners-up and eliminate the Chiefs. Balding Garo Yepre-mian was the star of the Miami victory, kicking a 14-yard field goal.

And here's how it went Sunday: Colts 20, Bills 14: Norm Bulaich's three-yard scoring run after a 20-yard Johnny Unitas pass to Roy Jefferson brought Baltimore back from a 14-10 third-quarter deficit. Buffalo's Robert James got thrown out by officials as the result of a fight which erupted after Bulaich's TD. The Bills were assessed 1C yards in penalties. Giants 34, Cards 17: This game also saw a fight break out.

Tarkenton, scoring once on a rollout himself, completed 14 of 21 passes for 242 yards plus his three TD tosses. One, however, was with the aid of a lateral by Bob Tucker to Don Hermann. Tucker went the first 12 yards, Hermann the final 20 on the scoring play. Bengals 30, Oilers 20: Houston had to rally in the second half and Essex Johnson was the sparkplug. He ran 15 for one touchdown and hauled in a 49-yard pass from Virgil Carter for another score.

The Cornhusker coach will make one lineup change Monday night as his club meets Nevada (Reno) at the Coliseum. Sophomore Tony Riehl will move in at one of the forward spots, replacing Leroy Chalk. Chalk, the club's leading re-bounder, managed just three rebounds against SMU Saturday night. The bright spot for the Cornhuskers continues to be their shooting.

"We've been shooting well all along," Cipriano indicates. Elsewhere, Kansas remains as the only unbeaten team in the Big Eight as Nebraska and Oklahoma suffered their first losses. The Jayhawks are 4-0, having played all four games at home. The Cornhuskers are one of four teams with one loss. Oklahoma, loser only to Arizona State, is 5-1; Nebraska and Missouri are 4-1 and Colorado 3-1.

Oklahoma State stands 3-2, Kansas State 2-2 and Iowa State 1-3 as the Big Eight has compiled an overall record of 26-11 against outside opposition. This game is scheduled before the season starts, he argues, and therefore, cannot have a home team. Wilson's words, uttered with premeditation prior to the game, were to the effect that the Cardinals would like to "stick it in Tarkenton's ear." "I said that," a disconsolate Wilson admitted after the game.

Two tournament championships on the road have helped the Bobcats to their 8-0 start. Jack recalls the 1938-39 and 1939-40 seasons when "we won 13 and 16 in a row. I remember those because I played on the teams as a guard." The '39 club was fourth in the national NAIA tourney, best finish ever in the event by a Nebraska school. Then there was Lon Graf's and W. G.

Speer's teams of the mid 1920s which won 54 consecutive Nebraska College Conference tiits, still a national small college record. Mclntire feels his current club is "the best squad we've had in the last four or five years." The Mike Roach, Tom Yopp, Drcxcl Harvey, Bob Bucttgenbach and Larry Rathe squads of the 1960-63 era came to Jack's mind as the last good group. Peru holds a record for appearances in the NAIA tournament at 13, the last being in 1966. Are the Bobcats on the road back to Kansas City? The team must continue to come from behind, not quit and get by some tough upcoming opposition in the form of Nebraska at Omaha and NCC foe Kearney. The players could feel it. Even during the warm-ups our guys were yelling, "We want it. They don't want it as much as we do." Wilson, however, wanted it as much as any member of the Giants. But if his statement didn't turn the tide, it's possible a decision he made in the second quarter may have. The Giants had built a 7-0 lead on Tarkenton's 14-yard pass to Bob Tucker and were driving toward another touchdown when they were called for offensive pass interference on a third-down play from the St.

Louis 17-yard line. Wilson had the option take the incompletion, setting up a fourth-down field goal try, or the penalty that would put the ball back at the 32 but give the Giants another opportunity to go for the touchdown. Wilson took the penalty. Tarkenton immediately jumped into the air and clapped his hands. "I was very happy about that," he explained.

"I got another chance to get the TD." And he did, but by an unusuat route. Fading to pass, he iound himself trapped. He scrambled left, then found Bob Tucker free downficld and hit him with a pass that covered 12 yards.
