Total defense finds Missouri a distant fifth with an average of 294.8 yards surrendered and trailing conference leader Nebraska which has given up an average of 251.1 yards a game. Offensively, Nebraska and Missouri are running neck and neck in total offense and scoring offense. Missoui is averaging a total of 407.3 yards a game to lead rendered while Missouri is fifth with an average of 17.8.

In rushing defense, Nebraska opponents are averaging 118.3 yards while Missouri is just slightly behind in second place with an average of 125 yards surrendered. Passing defense, a Nebraska weak point that has shown steady improvement, has the Huskers in fourth place with an average of 132.8 yards given up to opponents. This is also a weak point with the Tigers and they are dead between Nebraska and Missouri this Saturday should be a rugged one. The statistics, released today, show the defending Big Eight co-champions to be extremely well matched. In the eitht team statistical categories, Mizzou's Tigers are first in the conference in two-rushing offense and total of- the conference while the Huskers are close behind in second place with an average of 401 yards.

Missouri's 31.5 points a game average is good enough for second place in the conference behind Kansas which is averaging 32 points a game Nebraska is third win 30 points a game. Greater differences between the two clubs -show up in rushing offense, where Missouri leads the conference, and passing offense, 'where 'Nebraska leads. Missouri, led by halfback, Joe Moore, is averaging 277.3 yards on the ground while Nebraska is fifth with an average of 219.3 yards a game. The Huskers' comparative strength lies in defense where they lead the league in all categories except scoring defense. In that category, Iowa State is the leader with 7.3 points a game given up to opponents and Nebraska is second with 10.8 points sur By Associated Press Middle linebacker Kenny Page, who has been out with the flu, is still a doubtful starter for Kansas in Saturday's game against Kansas State.

Also, says coach Pepper Rodgers, a knee injury will definitely keep cornerback Jim Bowman out of the game. Kansas State held a short but Pass Receiving Rushing Defense Rushing Play 6am Caught Yds TO. Alt. Yd. V9.

The first big impression they made on coach Dan Devine after he had recruited them didn't have anything to do with football. But Devine likes to point to their off-the field accomplishments as an illustration as to their dedication and desire to succeed. "We had a contest for the freshmen to see who could keep the neatest room," Devine recalled when the Big Eight Skywriters visited the Tiger camp during pre-season drills. "Joe and Larron won the prize every time," he said. Dan didn't recall what the prize was, but Jackson and Moore didn't have any trouble remembering.

"It was a steak dinner," related Jackson. "We tried harder. We used steel wool on the floor to take off the marks." The extra effort was worthwhile for the St. Louis youngsters. It's been that way on the football field, too.

Moore Converted To Offense Jackson, a 6-3, 255-pound offensive tackle, enjoyed a big year as a junior and earned all-Big Eight honors. Moore finished as the No. 3 rusher in the nation last year averaging over 130 yards a game. They're picking up right where they left off a year ago. That's not bad for a fellow who always fancied himself as a defensive specialist.

It wasn't until his senior year at Beaumont H.S. in St. Louis that he found out about offense. He was "discovered" the previous spring when he happened to run 100 yards in :10.0 during track season. So he became a fullback in addition to linebacker.

Rushing for 1,200 yards as a senior should have really turned him on about carrying the ball. But when he reported for freshman ball at Missouri he lined up with the linebackers. "I thought that was what I could do best," he explains. "I just didn't have any confidence in my running." Confidence started coming last year. The turning point came on a 53-yard touchdown dash against Illinois in the second game.

"I stopped thinking about it and just ran. I found I ran well. The way I was running they weren't getting a good shot at me. It was fun," he explains. Likes To Run Off Tackle Moore isn't the nifty type.

He blends the power of a fullback with the quickness of a halfback in a slashing style ideally suited for the heavy traffic of inside running. "I'd rather run off tackle through the holes he's finding." says Moore of ex-roomie Jackson. And Joe figures that's where he ought to be running. I'm better straght ahead," he says. "You don't have as many people in pursuit.

You get a lot of people in pursuit on sweeps." Jackson's success can be traced back to his floor-scrubbing. It was a matter of pride in winning the contest. That's the way he views playing up front. "You get a lot of pride in making a great block. You may not get headlines, but you do get appreciation from your teammates.

That's what really counts," he emphasizes. goal line defense. Iowa tate opens its leape season Saturday against 17th-ranked Coach Chuck Fairbanks, of Pts.
