A year ago there were boisterous chants of "We want Missouri." Saturday the enthusiasm was much more subdued. "We did a lot of whooping and hollering last year, but the next week we went to Missouri and got the stuffing kicked out of us," related coach Bob "This year we didn't make much noise. We hope to make it after the game next week," he added. "We're thinking about Missouri it's definitely on everybody's mind but we're controlling it this year," explained co-captain Dan Schneiss.

Devaney reminded the Cornhuskers immediately after the Minnesota game that they hadn't defeated Missouri in three years. "I don't want to lose to that guy (Dan Devine) again" he said. "This Minnesota team fought back under adversity as well as any team we've ever played," he said. "They got tougher defensively in the second half, although we may not have exploited our passing game as. much as we could have," he said.

Jut while the Gophers were getting tougher on defense, so wsre the Cornhuskers. "We didn't make too many changes, but we did use one defense that we hadn't used in the first half," said Devaney. "We were more conscious of the draw play in the second half," he said. The Gophers' only touchdown came on a 45-yard draw play by fullback Ernie Cook in the first quarter. "They moved the ball on us more than we would have liked," Devaney said, "but Minnesota is a good offensive football team.

They have a very good running attack." Nebraska bad a 1 of opportunities for field goals in the second half, but passed them np in favor of going for first downs. "We were 18 points ahead and a field goal wouldn't have made that much difference," Devaney said. Devaney, claiming that Minnesota was much tougher this year than last, indicated that the Cornhuskers had played about as well as they had in their 21-21 tie with Soutnern Cal two weeks ago. "We thought that another touchdown might break their back," he explained. The Cornhusker coach pointed to Joe Blahak's recovery of a Minnesota fumble on the kickoff following the second Nebraska touchdown as one of the bigger plays in the game.

"That sure helped as," he said. Blahak recovered at the Minnesota 34 and the Cornhuskers scored in three plays, despite having a 15-yard clipping penalty called against them. That made it 21-7 and the Gophers were never to threaten the Nebraska lead as Devaney won his sixth straight game over Minnesota. NU's Dave Walline stretches in a vain attempt to deflect a Craig Curry (10) pass to Barry Mayer. The pass was overthrown.
