"We just win one more and we're halfway home," Chaffee said after the game. "It was a good team effort." The Plainsmen inarched 77 yards with the opening kickoff to open the scoring with Lonnie -Tapp going over from one yard is 4-32 4-38 FOOTBALL SCORES Austin College defensive back Rick Davis (21) and linebacker John Helms (80) offer Nebraska Wesleyan running back Lonnie Tapp (30) plenty of running room Saturday. The Plainsmen dumped the Kangaroos, 24-8. Razorbacks Blast Horned Frogs, 49-14 24-8 pass at the Austin 40 and after three plays had moved the ball to the 25, Tapp shook loose on a draw play to the Austin six.

After three more plays had placed the ball at the one, Mike Kemling burst over on another one-yard scoring play on a fourth and goal situation. Rick Boals added both extra point kicks as the Plainsmen took a 14-0 halftime advantage. Austin finally got on the scoreboard In the third quarter, when a pass interference call against Wesleyan gave the ball to the Kangaroos at the NWU 14. Joe Meade burst up the middle on the next play and into the end zone, but he fumbled as he went over and had to latch onto the ball again before the score counted. Austin added the two-point conversion on a pass from Edwards to Byron Boston for its only points of the game.

Wesleyan came back on its next series of downs, driving from its own 36 to score on a six-yard pass play from McKelvey to Boals. Boals again added the point and it ws 21-8. Boals completed the scoring with a 22-yard field goal in the fourth qvarter and had two more chances before the end of the game, but failed on both. He tried another 22-yarder after Wesleyan had failed to capitalize on an Austin fumble at the Kangaroo 10, but the ball bounced past him and Austin recovered at the 30. And he missed a 38-yarder with only 1:53 left in the game after Wesleyan had driven to the Austin 21.

"I thought our defensive line, did a tremendous job," Chaffee said. And of course our offense played well too." Chaffee said he was most pleased with the defensive secondary which intercepted three of Edwards' passes. "I was probably most pleased with our pass secondary," he said. "It has really come along. "We still had a few mixups that we'll take care of, but they did a fine job." Nebraska Wesleyan 7 7 7 324 Austin 0 0(08 NWU Tapp, 1 run (Boals kick).

But fans at Seacrest Field Saturday night were treated to a slam-bang, exciting offensive show despite the fact that Lin. coin Southeast and Fremont played to a scoreless deadlock. The two top ten rated clubs Southeast is ranked No. 2 and Fremont No. 3 not only proved that they are evenly matched, but their hardhitting style of play showed they are among the best in the state.

Each club started numerous drives deep in its own territory only to be thwarted by a stif. fening defense after a first down or two. In the first half Southeast crossed midfield twice, gaining the Fremont 37 and 38, while the visiting Tigers also dented enemy territory on two occasions, getting to the Southeast 31 and 47. With the aid of two piling on penalties assessed against the home-standing Knights and two costly fumbles by the host club, Fremont had four big chances in the second half, gaining the Southeast 27, 19, 29 and 12 yard lines. The Knights, helped bv a last-second pass interference call, were on the Fremont 42 at the game's end.

"I thought our kids were lust great on defense," Southeast coach Frank Soiich said with pride after the "The kind of breaks, or lack of them, that we seemed to be getting, you'd have thought we were playing in Fremont. We always had our back to the wall in that second half. But the kids never letdown." Veteran Fremont mentor Jack Bryant suggested that "we may not nave proved much playing a nothing-nothing tie, but both teams played good football. We bad some opportunities in the second half," he admitted, "but couldn't get the job done. Southeast is tough.

On the other hand we had them way back a couple of times and let them off the hook." Fremont had three field goal attempts fall short. Highly-touted Ritch Bane had kicked a 35-yarder for the Tigers a week ago. His first two shots from 46 and 41 yards out were just too far away. They were straight but short The last chance came from the 20 a 30-yard attempt but Southeast middle guard Reg Wagner caused Bahe to hurry the kick and it slithered off the side of his foot. Fremont got a break as the tall went out of bounds at tho two yard line.

Southeast managed to move from that precarious position in a sustained march to the Fre-mont 42, before the final gun ended the drive. The gambling tenor of the game was set on the very first series when Fremont went for a first down instead of punting with fourth and two feet on its own 31 yard line. Stopped on the next three plays Bahe ran from punt formation on fourth and four three plays later and gained the Southeast 31. But he fumbled when tackled, halting the drive. The only other big gainer in the first quarter came when Southeast's Egbert Thompson rambled 22 yards with a Don usvog screen pass.

No. 2 middle guard Monte Johnson came up wtih the big play, throwing Minnesota quarterback Bob Morgen for an 11-yard loss on a third and four play at the NU 14 to thwart the Gopher scoring bid How They Scored First Quarter Orduna's 19-yard scamper on the next play was partially nulified when officials charged Ingles with clipping, making it first and 25 from the Gopher 30. But two plays later, after a Tagge to Johnny Rodgers pass had put the ball at the 14, Orduna and Ingles teamed up on a TD pass and the Huskers had a lead that proved too much for Minnesota.

With the exception of that score, the Huskers started their other four touchdown marches in their own territory, and so powerful was the Husker blocking in the line, Minnesota linemen seldom got a shot at stopping the rushes of Kinney and Orduna, helping account for the fact that Gopher linebacker Bill Light was in on 22 tackles, often being the first man to confront the Nebraska ball carrier. Orduna carried the ball 14 times for 70 yards and Kinney 21 times for 91 yards as the Huskers rolled to 240 yards on the ground. The Huskers took the opening kickoff after Minnesota won the coin toss and chose the wind, then drove 77 yards in 10 plays to score. Tagge threw only three passes In the drive, completing only one, a 17-yarder to Orduna on a third and five from the Gopher 23 and Rodgers scored on the next play from the six with 10:37 left in the quarter. Cont.

From Page IE have one of his better days throwing the ball, a chore made difficult by the 23 miles per hour wind. Despite what appeared to be an off day for him, Tagge still managed to hit 12 of 21 for 148 yards before giving way to Van Brownson in the fourth quarter. His two tosses that kept the go-ahead TD drive alive were a 11-yarder to little split end Guy Ingles on a third seven from the NU 49 and a 21-yarder to fullback Dan Schneiss on a second and nine from the Minnesota 39. I But before Minnesota got to run another play from scrim-; mage, Nebraska had a 21-7 lead and there still was 1:50 left in the first quarter, But the rest of the 80 yards was gobbled up on the ground with Kinney and Orduna running through huge holes opened by the NU line and Kinney dived over for the score from two ywU away. On the ensuing kickoff, Joe Blahak grabbed the ball for the Huskers after the Gophers fumbled Paul Rogers' squib kick, a tactic used by the Huskers when kicking into the strong wind.

This gave Nebraska the ball at the Minnesota 34 and ITU Rodgers also had a 21-yard scamper in the drive, moving the ball from the Minnesota 49 to the 28. After Minnesota made it 21-10 with 9:33 left in the first half on a 35-yard field goal by Louis Clare, the Huskers drove 60 yards in 10 plays with the ensuing kickoff for a 28-10 halftime lead. Again the drive was accomplished primarily on the ground, but a 25-yard Tagge to Rodgers pass helping out. Tagge got the touchdown on a one-yard plunge. The final Husker score came on a 16-play, 59-yard drive that started in the third quarter and wound up in the final period with Tagge throwing to Ingles for the TD from the three yard line on a fourth down play.

It was the third pass completion of the march with Tagge finding Rodgers twice for gains of 14 and 11 yards, the first coming on a second and 10 at the Minnesota 47 and the second one on a third and seven from the Minnesota 30. Again, it was Orduna and Kinney picking up the rushing yardage four and five yards at a crack with Tagge also keeping for a seven yard gain from the Minnesota 17.
