Senators Lose 13 th as Birds Soar Into Playoffs By Associated Press 11 Dave McNally and Bert Blyleven breezed through a tuneup for the payoff pitch while Fritz Peterson threw a parting curve at the Green Monster. Baltimore's soaring Orioles whipped Washington, 6-2, Wednesday night as McNally tossed a four-hitter for his 24th victory of the season. It was tne slick southpaw's final fling before his scheduled start against Minnesota in Sunday's second game of the American League pennant playoffs. Blyleven, the Twins'. 19-year-old earned a starting assignment in the third game of the best-of-five title series with a solid eight-inning effort in Minnesota's 6-4 victory over Kansas City.

Peterson became a. 20-game winner for the first time in his career by hurling the New York Yankees past Boston, 4-3, at Fenway Park, a graveyard for left-handers because of its short left-field wall the Green Monster. It was the season finale for both clubs. Elsewhere, California topped the Chicago White Sox, 5-1; Milwaukee downed Oakland, 4-1 and Detroit nipped Cleveland, 4-3. In National League play, St.

Louis tripped Pittsburgh, 4-3; the Chicago Cubs blanked the New York Mets, 2-0; Montreal edged Philadelphia, 5-4; San Diego topped Los Angeles, 2-1 and Houston shaded San Francisco, 4-3. Atlanta and Cincinnati were idle. McNally, who had been bothered by elbow soreness in a previous start, went the distance without duress as the Orioles tied the club record with their 10th consecutive victory and extended Washington's losing streak to 13 games. He struck out nine while moving second game and 20-game winner Jim Palmer going for the Orioles against Blyleven Monday. Blyleven, who has won 10 games in half a season with the Twins, limited Kansas City to five hits and one earned run, but trailed, 4-1, when he left for a pinch hitter in the eighth.

The Twins won it in the ninth with a four-run rally capped by pinch hitter Paul Ratliff's three-run homer. "That job today made up my mind," Twins' manager Bill Rigney said in announcing that Blyleven would get a shot at the Orioles. Peterson, 20-11, defied the Fenway jinx for seven innings, gave up a two-run homer to rookie Luis Alvarado in the eighth and got ninth-inning help from' reliever Lindy McDaniel. It was' his first victory ever at Boston. The Red Sox' Carl Yastrzemski, gunning for a fourth AL batting title, went 1-4 to finish his season with a .329 average.

Kun-nerup Alex Johnson of California was1 1-3 against the White Sox and remained at .327 with one game to play. Lloyd Allen picked up his first major league victory for the Angels with clutch relief help from Dave Laroche in the eighth. Skip Lockwood and reliever Ken Sanders, aided by five double plays, weathered 11 Oakland hits to pitch the Brewers past the A's. Elliott Maddox' run-scoring double in the eighth enabled the Tigers to withstand successive ninth-inning homers by Cleveland's Vada Pinson and Duke Sims. The Gophers have stumbled at the start, but have always been potent come November.

Part of it, Warmath believes, is scheduling. He claims last week's 49-7 romp over Ohio University is something the Gophers have long needed and hints that it would have been even better to have played the Bobcats the week before meeting Missouri which thumped Minnesota, 34-12. "I can't recall a team of mine ever showing such a reversal of form from our opening game to our second came," Warmath says. Nebraska line 20 times last year and pounded out 90 yards. Ernie Cook, a 210-pound junior, handles the fullback chores, but quantity is a strong point in the Close observers rate this year's collection of running backs as the equal of those on Minnesota's Rose Bowl clubs in the early '60s.

The interior offensive line, headed by 6-5, 250-pound right tackle Alvin Halves, is an all-letterman aggregation and it proved that experience pays as the Gophers rolled for 485 yards on the ground against Ohio University last week. Warmath claimed it was the best early season blocking a Minnesota team has had in recent years. It includes Walt Bowser, who last year at this time was playing quarterback. When Warmath switched the swift 170-pounder to safety at mid-season last year it solved most of Minnesota's pass defense The aerial defense will be much better than Nebraska faced' last year when sophomore Jerry Tagge hit ,15 of 23 passes for 219 yards. Junior Mike White, inexperienced at this time last year, has already intercepted four passes in two games.1 He's the Gophers' swiftest back.

Halfback Jeff Wright' is another secondary standout and middle linebacker Bill Light proved in the Missouri game that he can do everything a linebacker must do meet the" running plays tough at the line of scrimmage or retreat and pick off pass attempts. There's nothing new up front. The Gophers are gigantic again. Their four-man front goes 235, 235, 235 and 243. Cornhusker scouts say that the big fellows are agile, Power is the name of the game on offense, too, although the Gophers are better prepared to throw this year with junior Craig Curry at the throttle.

"He's a Jimmy Jones type," Cornhusker scout Jim Walden says of Curry, who is a threat to either pass or run when he drops back. The big horse in the backfield is 6-2, 215-pound senior Barry Mayer. It's the kind you always need, a team that plays well but a team that you have to play well to beat. But also an opponent that gives you a chance to have a shakedown and get your team organized.

This is the type of opponent I'd like to see us. play early in every season." The "shakedown" game out of the way, the Gophers figure to be ready to resemble their November image much earlier this year. For one thing, Minnesota is a veteran team. Warmath greeted 35 lettermen, including 14 starters, this fall. The bulk of the experience is i on the defensive platoon, where nine starters return.

The other conference opener finds Missouri at Oklahoma State and Tiger coach Dan Devine feels his squad is better prepared benause good weather this week has permitted outside practices. The question was asked Kansas coach Pepper Rodgers if the KU stadium's artificial turf would hurt New Mexico Saturday. He would only say the Lobos would find it "different." Iowa State worked out in sweat clothes and shoulder pads after viewing films of this week's foe, Utah. The unbeaten Cyclones have a shot at a three-game winning streak for the first time since 1961. Oklahoma held its second secret practice after the Oregon State defeat and coach, Chuch Fairbanks juggled his offensive lineup.

By Associated Press Are the Colorado Buffaloes "self-satisfied" by last week's victory over Penn coach Eddie Crowder thinks and said Wednesday the Buffs are in for a surprise in their Big Eight football opener at Kansas State. "Kansas State is a very physical team and their poor showing to date is the result of an injury to quarterback Lynn Dickey," Crowder Dickey is scheduled to play and K-State coach Vince Gibson sums up tbe Wildcats position simply: "We have to have our passing game. "We can't brood about Time Out! NU Quarterbacks Near Full Strength Nebraska football coach Bob Devaney indicated Wednesday that the -Cornhusker quarterback spot is stronger this week than it has been all season. "I'd say that both Jerry Tagge and Van Brownson are close to being completely healthy," said Devaney. "Van Is throwing the ball long again and Jerry is running well." Tagge, who will likely get the starting call at Minnesota, has been hampered in the pre-season games by a thigh injury and Brownson saw his first action last week after being sidelined by an elbow injury. Devaney noted that right offensive guard Donnie McGhee is the only starter who is currently slowed by injury, but that he has been making good progress and should be ready to meet the Gophers. The Cornhusker coach noted that he had a lot of respect for Minnesota, but that his club "just has to go up there thinking we're going to win just like we did at Southern Cal." He claimed that playing on the road doesn't really concern him.

"I've never worried aboutit. You have the same size field, the same rules and use the same number of players," he said. "Some coaches think you get the short end of the stick when you play on the road, but I've never thought that. I think we've won about as many on the road as we have at home."
