November 24, 1974, Lincoln, Sunday Journal and Star 3C 3 for Oklahoma eadin Defense as gll Easy By Randy York Nebraska may have learned a valuable football lesson Saturday how not to defense the wishbone offense. The apparent lesson? Throw out its plug stunt defense. Top-ranked Oklahoma keyed Its whole wishbone attack on Nebraska's plug stunt to accumulate a massive 482 yards rushing in the Sooners' 28-14 victory over the Cornhuskers. 1 "It's a good defensive schemet" Oklahoma running back coach Wendell Mosley says of the plug stunt. "The only thing was, we were prepared for it.

We came up with the right it up more in the fourth quarter even though the wind against us," Hughes Hughes credited Humm. and Nebraska for two "great calls" on the Cornhuskers' touchdown passes. "On the first one (a 38-yarder to split end Chuck Mallto), I froze when Humm pumped to the wingback. I thought he had released the ball," offered Hughes. "On the second one, it was just a great call," according to Hughes.

"We were in a man-toman defense and obviously didn't have anyone assigned to cover the quarterback as a receiver." guard Dewey Selmon called this year's win over Nebraska more important and more satisfying than last year's 27-0 shutout in Shootout No. 3. "This year we had the national championship at stake so it meant more," Davis reasoned. "And being able to ride out a stormy situation made it more gratifying. Last year doesn't even compare to this one today." Hughes, the Sooners' defensive captain and safety who intercepted three passes, received the game ball from Switzer.

"Nebraska had a great game plan offensively. We just sucked defense wishbone teams," the Sooner running back coach noted. "It works, too, if the offensive team doesn't counter it right," he added. 'Nebraska used the same thing very effectively against Oklahoma State. But Oklahoma State tried to hand off to the fullback even when Nebraska was in its plug stunt.

"We looked at it on film a long time and worked on it," Mosley said. "Davis did a superb job of reading and adjusting and every back was able to capitalize." "How many yards did we get passing today?" smiled Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer as he stood in front of a host of microphones and a cluster of reporters. "Zero," Switzer said, answering his own question. "Every quarterback in America will throw for more yards than Steve Davis. But he does something more important takes the ball down, puts it in the end zone and wins.

"I can't believe we got almost 500 yards without even throwing the football against a team like Nebraska," an elated Switzer said as he mingled through the locker room to talk to his players after addressing the press. Davis, split end Tinker Owens, safety Randy Hughes and middle tained Oklahoma guessed little, if any. It was, in fact, as easy as 1-2-3, confessed Mosley. "When they were in the plug stunt, Steve faked the handoff and went outside," offered Mosley. "When they were out of it, we went up the middle with (Jim) Littrell." Davis explained that "I audibled a lot to take advantage of the situation.

I just read what defense they were in, then adjusted. "I kept getting outside on what we call a spin counter," Davis offered. "I was able to get around the jump tackle before he could come in. offensive scheme to counter it." Technically, the plug stunt involves Nebraska stacking a defensive end behind the down tackle with the two switching usual wishbone responsibilities, "Undesigned principally to stop the handoff play to the fullback," relates Mosley. "So we would feed the handoff, then go outside." Nebraska, according to Sooner quarterback Steve Davis, tried to mix its defense getting into the plug stunt, then out of it.

The Cornhuskers tried to keep Oklahoma's offense guessing. But Davis and Mosley main Cornhuskers A ft J-V Fumble 'J guard) John Lee got hurt. They were able to make too many yards up the middle with him out of there, although Willie Thornton played well con-sidering that he was also hobbled by injury and Jerry Wied did well, considering he has had very limited experience at middle guard." Osborne said that OU quarterback Steve Davis is the one who makes the Sooner attack go, not celebrated speedster Joe Washington. "Davis is a real competitor and very durable," Osborne notes. "I didn't think he could carry that much and hold up.

Also, that Randy Hughes (defensive back No. 19) made some great plays." There were some bright spots for the Huskers. Humm, Nebraska's greatest passer of all time, caught his first TD aerial ever. "We talked about trying that added didn't Davis, "that Nebraska make an adjustment to handle it during the game. You try to out-coach people and outdo things and I think we took advantage of the right things Asked if he could have designed the proper defensive adjustment to take away what Oklahoma was accomplishing with its wishbone, Davis replied yes.

"It's a relatively simple thing, but I don't really care to say it right here," offered Davis. Mosley, however, was willing. "It's the same plug stunt Nebraska has always used to STAFF PHOTO BY FRANK VARGA Concordia Falls To St. John's Seward Concordia jumped to an early lead Saturday against St. John's of Kansas, but quickly fell by the wayside as St.

The dejection and disappointment came over the inability to pin the visiting Sooners against the ropes early in the third quarter.

The admiration and praise was for an admittedly fine foe -a hard-hitting but clean, well drilled, finely coached football machine from Norman. "I really thought we had them," quarterback Dave Humm said after playing his final game in Memorial Stadium. "We had scored in the second quarter to tie it up (7-7) and had another pretty good drive going just before halftime. I thought the momentum was ours." The Las Vegas lefty was right. Nebraska received the kickoff to open the second half and marched 76 yards in eight plays to take a 14-7 lead.

The Huskers recovered an Oklahoma fumble on the ensuing kickoff and had the ball again at the OU 15! "If we had scored a second quick touchdown right there we would have had them on the ropes," Humm reflected. "Even a field goal to make it 17-7 might have made the difference. But we had a mixup on third down and it wasn't to be." (A complete explanation of that crucial series is reviewed in Bob Owens' game story.) Of the fourth-down field goal try, holder Terry Luck said, "Mike (Coyle) just hooked it left. The snap from center might have been a little high, but I had it down. Part of the problem may have come from his first miss (a long 45-yard attempt in the first quarter).

"That one was headed right for the center of the uprights but drifted outside because of the wind. He may have tried to over-compensate the next time." Cornhusker coach Tom Osborne said the only times he is critical of his players is if there is a lack of effort. "And that was certainly not the case today. They played all out. They can take pride in a fine effort.

They made some mis takes and they had a couple of opportunitites they didn't take advantage of. But that Oklahoma is an awfully strong football team." Nebraska had a couple of surprises for the Sooners. The first was a power-I formation which utilized two tight ends. "But (Brad) Jenkins got hurt and that forced us out of Osborne recalled. Another injury really was really tough on our defense.

But these are great kids. A lot of teams lose a couple of games early as we did and they start to complain and fight among themselves.

Not this group. They pulled together. I feel terrible for them. I'll get some more chances against Oklahoma, but this was the last chance for these seniors." Osborne admitted winning the Big Eight was the team's main goal this year. "I'm disappointed, but we have a secondary goal.

Now we want to match the longest winning streak in post-season bowl history (six in a row by Georgia Tech). And the seniors can be on a team that won an Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl game in one career. "They'll be off for a couple of weeks, then we'll regroup get ready for Florida. My only worry now is to get the kids back up, together again and ready to play, in the Sugar Bowl with determination." Humm also had a long 24-yard gallop on a quarterback draw play. "Usually that opens between guard and center, but they were pinching their tackles, so I just took off to the outside," Humm remembers.

"I'm disappointed and down, though," Humm admitted. "This was the year I really wanted to beat Oklahoma. We were embarrassed last year. Lincoln, Nl ISSOS the score to 32-6 before Friends was able to push over a fourth period score on an 18-yard pass play. Midland's ground game was overwhelming as they racked up 397 yards rushing on 61 attempts. Spencer Gilbert, who was named the game's outstanding back, totaled 110 yards of 14 carries.

However, Gilbert was not the leading rusher. Midland halfback Rick Klug gained 129 yards on just 7 carries all in the first quarter! But on the first play of the second quarter Klug was injured, and never returned to the game. Other awards went to Midland center Bob Zweig as most valuable offensive lineman, and to defensive tackle Chris Olsen as the most valuable defensive player. Midland gained 24 first downs to Friends' 14, and had 512 total yards to Friends' 262. Four Friends' fumbles were recovered by Midland to further frustrate the Friends' offensive.

Midland College of Fremont scored an impressive 32-6 win over Friends University of Wichita, Kan. here Saturday night in the Mineral Water Bowl. Midland took a 204 halftime lead on short runs by Dexter Brown and Spencer Gilbert and 57-yard bomb from quarterback Mike Pirtle to Bruce Bellamy. Although Midland was outstanding on offense, the key to the game came early when Friends was forced to punt on a fourth down situation.

Midland's Gilbert fumbled and the ball rolled to the Midland two-yard line where Friends recovered. But the Midland defense rose to the occasion and stopped the Friends offense, rated No. 2 in the; nation in the NAIA in rushing. Friends attempted two running plays, but fumbled on the second try with Midland recovering. Midland's offensive then took over and ran up the 2(H) halftime lead.

However, late in the first half, Midland's defense was again put Regional to the test. Friends sustained a long drive, mostly on pass plays, to gain a first down on the Midland 12 yard line. After three running plays, it was fourth down on the Midland six, at which point Midland was called for pass interference on a fourth down pass attempt. The penalty gave Friends a first down on the Midland three. Four Friends' plays resulted in a total of minus 7 yards, and Midland had again turned back a Friends scoring drive.
