Another mk has glided by, leaving io tu train delightful ira prtssionsot a series of charming ntertain tnents. Society is certainly en pleMura tent, both tba spirit of yty and of enjoyment being epidemic, and finding Tent in a continual roand of brilliant social event. It doM seem unfortunate, avon wbfla enjoying the unusually gay season, that some of ita pleasure can not be postponed nntil after the holidays, wban assuredly tockty will be In a state of stagnation and the reaction will he proportionately dreadful and ennui the fashion of the day. To tboxe who expect to be transported to tbat gloiiouacity in the Booth early in January, there will be some balm in the present system, and the pre dominant selfishness of our nature will rejoice in tba fact that for ns is the pleapure, end, for the unfortunate left behind. the gloom and unwonted dullness.

It can not be said that people are weary of thla social dissipation, on the contrary they display greater alacrity to enjoy as each new project is determined upon. Every one is fresh enough to en joy a ball for its own sake and to admire the (rah loveliness of the debutantes, who, seemingly, are not pleased by the consecutive balls, dinners and germane, where late boars and languid feelings are the Young men bare not begun to lean upon doors and walls in attitudes of ineffable disgust and stroke handsome mustaches with shapely hands; but, nntil tome well known beauty or soma one possessing especial attractions for them la espied and the look of dizguft vanishes and the nonchalant young man ambles along with his head in the air toward the object of bis affections. Now erery one looks toward from one day to another to pleasure and deems oneself not popular unless a reception engrosses the after noon. Theater claims in the early evening and some large ball whiles away the time between 1 1 o'clock and the witching hours of the morning. On lovely and popular maid was beard to say she bad her en gagements for the reception on Thursday, ber cavalier for the theater would meet her there, and from the theater sba would go to bar balls in succession.

Happy dam sel, every moment fraught with pleasure And. now. for the week's diversions. The German, given by the Debutantes at Mr, Enead's, inaugurated the gayety. An unu ftia number of invited gnesta.

strangers. somewhat restricted the pleasures of the lance, and an innovation, which should be utterly foreign to such entertalaoneutt, the "entente cordials" which has heretofore characterized the germans of this club. But bo one will deny it was a most beautiful german, the large room, lined on all its aides wilh rows of chairs, and their lovely ooejpants, while behind them rose the chairs ijr the married friends. Why is it that words are inadequate to express ttad beauty of the scene I Cer tainly imagination will not play yon false, and I will leave it to tbat faculty, my dear friends. Ur.

Ellison made a most admirable leader, unassisted though he was. And what a pretty feature the crowning of the Queen of Beauty wast How lovely and modest she looked, standing the cynosure of all eyes, surrounded by her chosen maids of honor. Her charms are manifold, but the greatest of all was her modesty and blush ing acceptance of the honor and court paid to ber. What a vast dissimilarity between tba scene in that warm, lovely house, redo lent of tbe sweat flowers of the dancers, and echoing to the gay laughter and bright allies of the enchanted occupants on that Toeeday evening, and that presented to the aiusa eav' revelers as they left the bouse and descended to their carriages. Bleak and cold and desolate, snow falling and freezing es it.

fell, horses impatient in the cold, chilly air, prancing and clamping their bits, the drivers. with numbed hands incapable of holding them in check, while many girlish giggles rang out on the frosty air, attesting to a few weary wayfarers attracted around tbe gate that tbe last faint echoes of tbe music still lingered around be and drew their at ten Uon from tbe desolate scene they were help ing to investigate. Home they went only to rest for a few short hours, before undertaking too fatigue of a double bill tbe following titer noon. In spite of the cold weather society turned out en tnasae to fay deference to two lovely entertainments. Mr.

and Mrs JM or ton Atoms and the auoim Morris re cited on afternoon and in tbe evening Ir. and Mrs. Holloway At tbe former the ruests came in from the white covered outer world to a beautiful atznos mirth, aud tbe intoxication produced by all fought for mastery. From behind a bower of lovely flowering plants and tali, waving palms tbe musicians plied their skill and bade the many guests pay attention to music from tbe airihe operas. over in a corner a young belle held her minature court giving a siciie here and a glance there.

In the center of the room, stood the, host and hostess receiving their guests, and on the sofa sat tbe more stately matrons discussing the scene. Out in tbe hallway leading to the dining room was a table, here a party of merry, jolly, bright yonng people spent their in most harmonious pleasure. Many of tbe guests came in evening dress en route to ttim other reception and they were reluctant to leave so much pleas nra behind. Miss Fearn and Miss Casseday were tbe honored guests of the evening, tbe reception being given to them. Then bow thoroughly enjoyable was the party at Dr.

way's. You know "pleasure is but the refreshment that cheers us in the pursuit of true happiness," or all of pleasure engendered by such occasions It bat a necessary prescription to our full and perfect health. Dr. and Mrs. Holloway entertained' their daughter's gnest, Miis Mead, and she certainly enjoyed a taste of the proverbial Kentucky hospitality.

The strangers within our gate are always reluctant "to fold their tenta and silently steal away," and this year more so than ever. Our doors are ever pent and all having a claim upon ns are welcomed and feasted. Our Louisville, men add another to their overcharged account of politeness and courtesy by their ever 'ready gallantry to strangers, and their attention to them. At this party all tbe temporary sojourners in our city, and they are many, were present, and added not a a little to the pleasure and beauty of the evening. ThU nous was so nicely adapted to the pleasure of iU guests large drawing room for the dancers; a quiet, warm reception room, whore lass widely inclined pleasure seekers could rest, and enjoy a quiet, delightful chat with some quiet soul; deep window with nicely cushioned seats, and wide accommodating stairs.

How startling it is to casually raite your eyes, while in tbe midst of a quiet talk with some congenial friend, and aee, standing in the door way, souio peivon who has been listen ing to your conversation, and baa construed it according to Lis own nice method. 8uch things are too prevalent. On Thursday evening the handsome home of Sir. and lira, J. W.

E. Bayley waa given over to tbe friends of their niece, Uim Julia Barrett. It is our mission to tell of each areata at beat but we arast eonfe that THE COUBTER JOUKN ALi LOUISVILLE, SUNDAY MORXIXG, DECEMBER 21 1881. SIXTEEyPAGES. in tl is instance our mission signally fails.

We all know of beauty is a joy forever," and wa nlust apply this quotation. in tbe abstract, to tbe party on Thursday evening. 1 nree large rooms and a wiue, commodious ball were devoted to daficing rooms with fathomless mirrors reflecting tbe scene within, and a ball with broad, polished stairs, wherein were unconsciously formed lovely pictures, studies in brilliant colors, on which tbe yellow light dwelt lovingly, as if weary of bin cast back and reflected from the splendor of the richly hung wall and tbe harmonious background. The stairs turned and curved, and from niches in the walls looked dowu upbn the merry scene without lifeless creations in marble and bronze. The guests staid on until tbe "wee, small hoars," tbe spoil of enchantment was upon them, and not until older heads aud kr signalled their disapproval of such late hours did tbe merry gathering disperse.

Coming down the stairway, cloaked and ready to face tbe cold, many sketches from "After the Ball" confronted us. Many happy maidens, with glowing cheeks and laughing eyes, had cask themselves upon the divans and chairs, in happy ignorance of the pretty pictures they were forming. And on Friday two charming theater par ties and on Saturday a progressive euchre party, Have the final touches to this week of pleasure. We were "in at the death" and knew how charming even the parting momenta were. SockIS.

THE WHY AS'D WHEREFORE. "To many a lass, with many a sigh. My tongue has whispered many a lie. Hut beVrlhey'U catch me at such caper As puttin of the same on pajier." Old nff. The chief occupation of newspapers at present seems lo be the of such ill starred love miseries as may fall within the reportorial cognizance, and the paper which every now and then can treat its readers to an authentic and spicy revelation of such nature is in lively demand and looking up in the world.

The distressing mental state of Bulwer is scarcely forgotten until An enterprising man by the same of RuRg furnishes us with another sensation, which. In nowise Comparable to the other case in its utter imbe is more than equal to it in tbe heedless disregard of consequences and tbe utter absence of that useful inftUnct, self preserratloa. with which some people seem but raegerly endowed, While mousing among the correspondence of his emrdover. Mr. Stan.ev Waterloo, durln? the ilattcr's absence, he unearthed the germ of a sweet morsel of gossip In a batch of letters not intended for hi perusaL which he cheerfully contributes to the papers simply aa a matter of news.

i Mr. Stanley Waterloo is the editor of the St Taul Day, and has associated with him on that pater a Miss Bagby. During the editor's absence Miss Hacby was supposed to ksep up a regular correspondence, so tbat he might be posted upon matters relating to his business. These are some of the letters: "Sixdat. r.
