OWENSBORO. A TBxrrraa imu citt thb cxiieb TATES SZSATuBSBIP ASD TBS GUBERNATORIAL SACK SIWI KOTES. ICormoaodeoea of the Owcksboso, Sept. CO. Dere is a city having 12,000 inhabitant, taxable property amounting to at least 13,000,000, and.

withal, -a municipal debt of only 0,000. Within tba last ten year? tba population of tba place- hat lncri ated JO per while the increase in tba valoe and mount of taxable property baa been la a similar ratio. Daring the last three weaka jour correspondent baa rutted ten counties oa tba Green rtrex and more westerly ectlona ot the 8tate, bnt baa found in no other community such distinct and substantial ertdencee of thrift aa are apparent here on every baod. WItirn fire rears past the marketable value of rati estate in the corporate limits baa Increased fully twenty-rife per and to-day there ia a lanre demand in axeeseof the supply for bulldina for both residence and business. And ytt, during the preaent rear, the improvementa already made are estimated at lullr $300,000.

This demand makea Owensboro a good place for mechanics and laborers generally to whom fair wages and steady employment aro constantly offered. These results are the outzrowth of tba meager settlement which, bavtrg been i known many years a the Yellow Bants," was selected In 1315 as tba county seat of Daviess, and thereupon named by the Commissioners of tbe first County Court "Owensboro." in honor of Abram Owen, formerly a reputable citizen of Shelby county. Kentucky. TAX LEADUVG INTERESTS of this city are quickly visible to tbe visitor. They are dlscernable in the nineteen distilleries which manufacture 500 barreis of whisky per day.

and in which $1,000,000 are Invested; and in tba twenty-three tooscco atemmeries, from which at least pounds of tobacco axe shipped annually. Tbe chief capitalists, therefore, are "whisky kings" and manufacturers of tobacco, tbe latter baring, however, bat little genuine enterprise. As an indication of tbe value and extent ot tbe whisky interest, it ay be stated that tbe internal rerenuo collections tor this district for Ausust amounted to $66,875 37, of wbieb $53,181 80 were obtained from distilled a pints, lu the same month last vear the revenue collections amounted to $40,820 93, of which $35,240 40 were derived lroni distilled spirits. Tbe district pays to tbe Government $4,000,000 annual 1 j. Tbete figures indicate tbe growth as well as the magnitude of tbe whisay and tobacco business, and furnish a substantial res son why Congress should appropriate, promptly, money enousb to erect a baudaome Government building in Owensboro equaling In extent and costliness a similar structure now being built at Faducah.

"C1TT airs" are prevalent and conspicuous here In every direction. Tour correspondent has seldom seen in a city ot only inhabitants so many really handsome equipages. Here, too. Is a beautifully turnUhed Opera-house that would be creditable to a much larger city, and which was completed at a coat of $30,009. The water-works, constructed on the lio.ly system, are ample.

The current of political talk here, aa elsewhere, tbat yonr correspondent baa lately visited In Southern Keotucky, is outte distinct, expressions of sentiment and opinion being freely made whenever "two or three are gathered together." Tbe remark is often beard that "the next Gubernatorial race ia too far off to be conclusively foreseen," but tn this county, no less than In. nine others 1 have visited, there is, apparently, a quiet though determined and almost universal feeling favor of making Hon.

Tbomaa L. Jones the succeeding Chief Magistrate of tbe State. Many persons are heard, in substaoce, to avow that there is a popular cestro that Ca.pt. Jones shall be "nominated and elected without opposition." I have never before witnessed a similar condition of public sentiment on such a subject in Kentucky. When I struck this and several other ad-acent counties ten days aao uiy ears greeted the name of Hon.

W. X. Sweeney in coanec Uon with tba Senatorial contest in onpocltion to Uoo. James 8. Becz, and it appears that there la a strong likelihood that Mr.

They say" that he is the man to lead whatever opposition there may be in tbe State to the re-election of Mr. Beck; but Beck will be Sard to beat.

Mr. Sweeney Is about fifty rears of age. He represented this district in the Forty-second Congress, Is a profound lawyer, aa Impressive orator, aa accomplished scholar, always a Democrat, and. I Infer, very popular among the masses. Without speculating on so doubtful a contest, it may be said, nevertheless, tbat this eon of Daviess is a moat noble Kentucktan.

MISCnXAJTCOtTS VOTES. The Methodist Conference will convene here or the 13th of October, and tbe city will rive the delegates a hospitable greeting. Tbe next annual fair will begin October 5, aad promises to be tbe biggest thing out." There are offered premiums amounting to about $4,000 in value, while the racing wiu be fint-elaee very the entries being for both trotting end running. The health of Owensboro Is excellent, there having been only a few ease of typhoid fever, which hse virtually disappeared. The tobacco crop of Daviess Is nearly aa iTerage cna, the late rains having brought it eut amazingly.

The corn crop is not near aa bad aa at first represented. Wherever there baa been proper cultivation the crop is good.
