"FT roved UCLA Hoping to End NU Title Mopes Early; Sports Lincoln, Neb. Friday, Sept. 8, 1972 23 one-year probation imposed by the NCAA, and Kermit Johnson, give UCLA two of the best running backs in the country. Rodgers has installed the potent wishbone offense and has junior college transfer Mark Harmon, son of Michigan ail-American Tom Harmon, as his signal caller. The Cornhuskers will meet the challenge of the wishbone with a solid defense led by ail-Americans Rich Glover at middle guard and Willie Harper at right end.

The Big Red front five also includes three strong rotating defensive tackles in Bill Janssen, John Dutton and Monte Johnson, plus rugged Steve Manstedt at the other flank. But the pass threat, with untested sophomore George Kyros at safety and seldom used Randy Borg at one defensive halfback post, poses one question mark for the Huskers. The other comes on offense where Devaney must choose between redshirted sophomore David Humm and Steve Runty, a walkon from Ogallala, as his quarterback to replace first-round pro draft choice Jerry Tagge. By VIRGIL PARKER Los Angeles Coach Bob Devaney's Nebraska football team opens its bid for a third straight national championship against an improved and fired-up band of Bruins from UCLA here Saturday night. The kickoff for the season-opening clash, before an expected crowd of 70,000 in Memorial Coliseum, is set for 10:05 p.m.

Lincoln time. The invading Cornhuskers will be after their 24th consecutive victory and 33rd in a row without a defeat. The only game marring that streak a 21-21 tie against USC in 1970 came on this same field. UCLA holds a 2-0 edge in games played between flie two schools, but that pair of contests were held before any of the present Big Red performers were born. The Bruins blanked the Huskers, 18-0, here in Los Angeles in 1946, then dumped Nebraska, 27-15, two years later in Lincoln.

But the battle between the two opposing coaches which stands even at two games apiece goes back just five years. Second-year UCLA grid boss Pepper Rodgers directed Big Eight Conference foe Kansas to a 10-0 triumph over a Devaney-coached Nebraska team in 1967, then went two-op with a 23-13 victory the following year. Devaney claimed a narrow 21-17 win in 1969, then romped to a 41-20 victory in '70 to even his personal series with Rodgers. The Nebraska triumph over Rodgers and Kansas in '69 was the start of the Cornhuskers current unbeaten string. The Big Red had dropped two of its first four games that fall.

Then a come-from-behind victory over Kansas in the closing moments propelled Nebraska to a 9-2 finish. Though UCLA was 2-7-1 last fall in its first season under Rodgers, and finished a disappointing seventh in the Pac-a Conference, the Bruins are expected to be much improved this year. WASHINGTON (UPI) The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to consider within the next two weeks a bill that would allow the American and National Basketball Associations to merge. The legislation, which included several amendments, was given unanimous approval Thursday by the Antitrust and Monopoly subcommittee during a closed executive session.

A key amendment to the bill would abolish the reserve clauses in present and future player contracts. The amendment was proposed by Sen. Sam J. Ervin, who has long supported any legislation that would protect players' rights. It would allow players selected in the drafts to sign a two-year contract with the second year optional.

Other amendments called for: Elimination of a proposed $1.25 million indemnity payment that each ABA team would pay to. the NBA if the two leagues merged. Each visiting team to receive no less than 30 per cent of the home team's gate receipts. Blacking out of all telecasts of professional basketball games on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday within a 75-mile radius of high school, junior college or collegiate games. An end to blackouts of all bowl and playoff games if they are sold out.

Besides Ervin, those included in the preparation of the bill were Sens. Roman Hruska, Edward Gurney, John V. Tunney, and Phillip A. Hart, D-Mich. Kickoff 10:05 p.m.

Broadcasts-KFOR (1240), KLIN (1400), KFAB (1110), WOW (590) Parker's DeMont, Thinclads Penalized Munich WV-The United States received two jolts from the International Olympics Committee Friday and a shock in competition when Jim Ryun failed to qualify for the prestigious 1,500 meter run at the Summer Olympic Games. Two other Americans, Bob Wheeler and Dave Wottle, the winner of the gold medal in the 800-meters, qualified for Saturday's mile run in the other heat. The IOC, in executive session, ruled that American quarter-milers Vince Matthews of New York and Wayne Collett of Los Angeles, would be barred from future participation at these Games because of their behavior on the victory stand following a 1-2 United States finish in the 400-meter race Thursday. Several hours after the IOC banned Matthews and Collett, Ryun, the world record holder in the mile, failed to qualify when he fell in a heat won by Kip Keino of Kenya, who beat Ryun in Mexico City four years ago.

Ryun got his legs tangled with those of Billy Fordjour of Ghana, while running next to last with 500 meters to go, and both fell. Ryun got up and finished in 3 minutes, 51.2 seconds 3:40.0 for Keino. Ryun finished ninth. The IOC ruled that because of their behavior on the victory stand following Thursday's 400-meter race, Matthews and Collett would not be allowed to compete again. They had been scheduled to go in Sunday's relay race.

Then the Olympic ruling body confirmed its earlier decision to strip DeMont of his swimming gold because of positive results of a post-drug test. U.S. officials had argued that DeMont's use of the drug for an asthma condition should not have eliminated him, but the IOC disagreed. Doane tied powerful Yankton last year and then went on to win the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC). Leading Wesleyan's pro-style offense is senior quarterback Dave McGrane, who led the Plainsmen to a 7-0 record last year before being injured and missing the final two games of the season. With McGrane returning at quarterback, Chaffee will start last year'i back-up quarterback, Ross Stephenson, at a running back position.

"We'll try to keep everything simple for this first game." Chaffee said. "We want to run what we know and run it well, and get some experience for some of our new players." Chaffee had his Plainsmen working hard the first part of the week after a scrimmage with University of Nebraska at Omaha showed some glaring problems. First year head coach Jim Corns of Bethel listed an all-freshman backfield to start against the Plainsmen. Bethel had a 0-9 record last season. Although Doane won the NIAC title last year, the Tigers take a two-game losing streak into Saturday's opener against Yankton.

Doane lost to William It'll be test time Saturday when Nebraska Wesleyan and Doane open their 1972 football seasons. Wesleyan meets Bethel (Kan.) College at O.N. Magee Stadium and Doane plays Yankton (S.D.) College at Doane's Simon Field. Game time for both games is 7:30 p.m. For Wesleyan head coach Harold Chaffee, Saturday's game will be a test to see how well newcomers will fill several offensive and defensive gaps from last year's 7-2 squad.

For Doane head coach Ray Best, Saturday's contest with Yankton will be an indication Penn College and Dana to close out the 1971 season. However, Doane should be ready to start the 1972 season. The Tigers have 18 returning starters off last year's 6-2-1 team. The running of NIAC scoring leader Floyd Guillory and the receiving of John Green, a junior split end, should give Doane a well-balanced attack, according to Best. At quarterback, Best can count on either junior Leonard King or sophomore Emile Sigee.

However, defense should be Doane's strong point with 10 starters returning. Doane held its opponents to 11.4 points per game last season.
