They paused for memento photos as they disembarked, then moved through the race car garage to the pool area. Finally, they were treated to a fireworks extravaganza as fine as NBD Bank's Fourth of July show. About 300 unwound after the race at the Cars of Yesteryear museum of Joe and Marlyne Sexton. The Hyatt Regency Indianapolis catered a New Orleans buffet dinner and Endless Summer played for dancing. Giant multicolored floral bouquets spilled over the edge of the stage, with smaller ones in the same colors used on tables. "Voice of the '500'" Bob Jenkins was emcee for the telecast program, which gave each driver a chance to talk.

Highlights were video presentations of past winners, and live appearances by such legends as Paraelli Jones, Johnny Rutherford, Tom Sneva and Al Unser Sr. Among guests of the Hulman-George family for the dinner were Joan Roosa of Gulfport, widow of astronaut Stuart Roosa, and Nicholas Cole (son of the late president of General Motors, Ed Cole) with wife Molly, of Lockhart, Texas. of the IRL.
