But he knew from the first Formula Ford race Christian ever drove in that he would become a star in the sport. "I put Christian in go-kart racing," said Emerson Fitti-paldi's 51 -year-old brother. "He drove for five years and won all the championships in Brazil. "And the first 9 Christian Fittipaldi year he was into racing cars, in the first race I saw Christian has a good chance in motor racing. He showed good results.

On the first day he showed he has good future in motor racing." Sunday, young Fittipaldi battled his way from 27th starting position to second only 2.481. seconds behind winner Jacques Ville-neuve, last year's rookie award winner (he also placed second). Fittipaldi is just 8 1 days older than Villeneuve. Both turned 24 earlier this year. Villeneuve's father Gilles was a Formula One driver as was Christian's father Wilson.

Fittipaldi has an uncle who has driven in the 500 and so does Villeneuve. Uncle Emmo, a two-time 500 champion, failed to make this year's race. But he provided a wealth of inside information to his young nephew. "Christian said after the race, 'Everything Emerson told me what's happen during the race is exactly what Wilson Fittipaldi said. "He know everything here, because Emerson know a lot information for Young Fittipaldi was a pleased recipient, the 14th foreign-born driver so honored.

He agreed that Uncle Emmo gave him good advice. "About 90 percent of what Emmo told me happened exactly the same," he said. "After the race finish I started laughing to myself. I said, geez, this guy must be good or he must have a lot of experience. No doubt about that, he has.

He has been fantastic to me and someone of great help." Christian also credited four-time Indy winner Rick Mears and teammate Robby Gordon, who finished fifth, with providing vital assistance. He said the main thing he learned in the race is that it is extremely important to be close to the leader in the final 15 laps so a driver can have a chance to win. He passed rookie Eliseo Salazar and got a break when Bobby Ra-hal was called for a stop-and-go penalty to take second place. Fittipaldi said it was very emotional for him when he climbed out of his car and was hugged by his father, who had never been to the 500 before. "I think in some ways it has been difficult for me like in my career because of the Formula One rides I had," he explained, "And coming up here and having a very nice chance with (team owner Derrick) Walker and running the race like the whole team did (Sunday) I think was fantastic." Though the Fittipaldis came through Formula One, they now have become a famous name in Indy lore.

"We are happy about that," said Wilson Fittipaldi, who expected no more than a 10th place finish by his son. "I hope Christian stay here." Is Christian thinking of returning to F-l? "No, not at the moment," he said. "There are a lot more normal human beings here and I'm happy to be racing around here." HOOSIER PARK MONDAY'S RESULTS FIRST RACE Cotton Cove (H. "He makes it very, very easy for us." Villeneuve, last year's rookie of the year, led only 15 laps, fewest since Mark Donohue led 13 in 1972. Villeneuve turned his own severe two-lap penalty (also for passing the pace car twice during a yellow) into an unbelievable victory. He took the checkered flag 2.481 seconds in front of Brazilian rookie Christian Fittipaldi, averaging 153.616 mph. With team owner Barry Green, team manager Kim Green (Barry's brother), crew chief Kyle Moyer, the crew and others on the stage, Villeneuve told how he pulled off the comeback.

"It takes more than pure speed on the race track to win the race," he said. "It takes chemistry, a lot of teamwork. Every part of this team helped lead us to success." Villeneuve said he personally did everything possible to not win the race. He crashed In practice, drew the two-lap penalty and stalled the engine a couple of times in the pits.
