The bureau has published a detailed account of tax collections by state governments in the 194748 fiscal year. It shows: Iowa's revenue from general sales of use taxes and excise levies rose to $87,072,000 during the period, as compared with $72,903,000 the previous year.

In Nebraska, where no general sales tax exists, returns from excise taxes mounted from $19,783,000 in the year ended June 30, 1947, to $25,273,000 in the year. ended this June 30. South Dakota's collections from sales and excise levies reached $23,161,000 nn. the 1947-48 year, coining, up from $19,056,000 the previous 12 months. In South Dakota, no taxes other than sales and excise levies rank high as income-producers.

The nearest competitor is the license and privilege fee group, which brought in $5,255,000 in the 1947-48 span. That was a drop, however, from the 1946-47 figure of $5,405,000. In the category, Dakota received more from 1 excises than from the general sales tax-- $10,070,000.
