It will be a 6:30 p.m. favorite dish dinner and each one is also asked to bring their own table service. Members may bring their daughter or a guest daughter to the event. Men members will assist as a serving committee with John Terry as chairman. Others assisting will be Murray Sorg, Robert Townsend, Richard Kimball, Albert Ward, Albert Hopf and Bill Terry.

A program will be presented. Mrs. Ramona Skinner is program chairman and Mrs. Joann Eschen vice; historian, Teri Lehmann.who is also historian for the local auxiliary; guard, Ann Ringles, Dubuque; assistant guard, Bernice Dodge, local treasurer; conductress, Elsie Walker, Oelwein. Mrs.

Faber, Mrs. Lowry, Mrs. Ringles and Mrs. Walker were all re-elected. Mary Jo Kortenkamp of Independence was appointed first color bearer.

Candace Johnson of Dubuque the Ninth district winner in the Voice of Democracy contest was presented a check from the auxiliary. AAUW Plans For New Year Twenty womun will make up the new Independence branch of the American Association of University Women. They have chosen as their topic of study for the new year, "The Law and the Citizen." Panel groups, symposiums, and speakers will be used to implement the program. The branch will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month beginning in August. Officers chosen to held the Independence branch are: President, Mrs.

Luella Burns; first vice president, Mrs. Sally Craig; second vice president, Mrs. Beulah Jorgensen; secretary, Mrs. Vera Van Laningham, and treasurer, Mrs. Rachel Holmes.

Qualified women, desiring to join the group may do so by contacting officers before May 30. Becky Fratzke was honored at a bridal shower Sunday, May 1 in the home of her aunt, Mrs. Floyd O'Brien, at Rowley. Co-hostesses were her grandmothers, Mrs. Leila O'Brien and Mrs.

Margaret Fratzke, both of Independence. Party games were played and prizes awarded. Decorations were in the bride-elect's colors, green, yellow and white. Those who assisted in serving refreshments were Vicki Beatty, Deborah Beatty, Jonl Melka and Judy O'Brien. Guests included Mrs.

She is survived by her parents; eight brothers, Robert at Offut Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb.

John W. Stark officiated at the 4 p.m. prayer service in the Parker Funeral home in Jesup Thursday, May 5 with burial in St. Athanasius cemetery. Daniel Shonka Funeral services were held Monday in Royal Oak, for Daniel C.

Shonka, who died at 12 p.m. April 28 in Veterans' Memorial hospital, Detroit, Mich. Mr. Shonka was a former resident of Independence and was employed by A. C.

Burkhart Co. for several years before moving to Detroit in 1939. Surviving are his wife, Winifred; one son, Thomas; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Alberta) Hearn and 13 grandchildren, all of Detroit, four brothers, Joe of Chicago, Paul, Cedar Rapids, Louis, Independence and Henry of Royal Oak, three sisters, Agnes, Vinton, Mrs. Jack (Florence)Cantrell, Royal Oak, and Mrs.

Joseph Pint, Independence. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Weste) and Albert. Relatives attending the funeral from Independence were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Shonka, Mrs.

Joseph Pint and Paul Shonka. Mrs. Laura Ward Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Furry Ward, 83, of Independence will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 6, at the Christian church In Brandon.

Mrs. Ward died Tuesday evening at the Virginia Cay hospital Mr. and Mrs. Myron Baum of Oelwein are parents of a son born Sunday, May 1. The baby was named Ethan Myron.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Baum are the grandparents. Mr. and Mrs.

George Geesey of Cedar Rapids were Sunday guests of Mrs. Clara Primus. In the afternoon Mrs. Primus and her guests attended the open house at MHI. Mr.

Leary visited Pearl and Hattie Reimer at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, Thursday, April 28. The Reimer sisters recently moved to Friendship Haven from Independence. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Marshall were Sunday guests in the home of their SOCIALS Members of the E.

Heege will be co-hostess. The program will be presented by Mrs. Leslie McLeod of Jesup and her topic is, "By Lamplight." in Vinton. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

J. L. Furry, she was born June 18, 1883, at Mount Auburn. She was married to Dr. E.

C. Ward at Mount Auburn in August, 1909. Dr. Ward practiced medicine in Brandon all his life. Following his death Mrs.

Ward moved to Independence. Survivors include one son, E. L. Ward, Pleasanton, two daughters, Mrs. Harriett McAtee, Quasqueton, and Mrs.

Robert Bryan, Dallas, Texas; a sister, Mrs. H. D. Floyd, Charles City; and five grandchildren. Burial will be in the Brandon cemetery.

He is now administrator of the new county hospital in Emmetsburg. Dudle at the Veteran's hospital in Iowa Clt. Mrs. Keith Jacobs of Fair view and her father, Clifford Dudley, Troy Mills, visited Virgil Dudley at the hospital Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs.

William Nielsen are parents of a daughter born Sunday, May 1, at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Nielsen is the former Shirley Hemphlll of Walker. Mr.

and Mrs. LeeDlxwere Friday dinner guests in the Mrs. Florence Carson home in Rowley. Springville Rebekah Lodge 99 brought the traveling emblem to Willow Rebekah Lodge 398 Wednesday night and presented it with a ceremony. Nineteen guests from the Springville Lodge and the Mar ion Lodge attended.

Refreshments were served. Pvt. Tom Merrifleld, son of the Lynn Merriflelds, was home for two weeks from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is now stationed in Alabama. CA Wayne Bach, son of the Orval Bachs, left Tuesday after a two- week leave and will go to Balboa hospital in San Diego, Calif, for training.

Tommy Slattery, son of the Harold Slatterys, of near Kiene underwent a tonsillectomy Saturday morning at People's Memorial hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Soukup and family were Sunday dinner guests in the Mrs. Inez Carpenter-Donald Main home.

It was in honor of Timmy Soukup's fourth birthday which was Monday. Mrs. Ted Dol and son, Roger, visited her mother, Mrs. Effie Peyton, at the Martinson Nursing home in Marion. The senior class chartered a bus and went to Chicago Friday morning and returned Saturday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Barnes were the chaperons. The Chi Rho group from the Christian church will have a rummage sale at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

They will serve lunch. Word has been received here of the marriage of Mrs. Nola Walton of Center Point and Melvin J. Guy of Puyallup, Wash. April 16 at the Methodist church in Sumner, Wash.

They will make their home in Puyallup, Wash.
