TUAT kl'The Democrat is con- exorciecd over what ii Stterms the "peuuliar econoujy" of of SupervisorB in purchas- iirg a safe for tho Tnx Collector. iniUter of purcdiiHirig a safe at the last meeting of the IJoard aa a necessity. Not only 3fr. Johnson hiii Doputy-SIieriflf Weldon stated before tlieBoiird thai the necessity for a first-olnss, fire and burglar proof safe for the Tax Collector existed. Jlr.

Weldon also stated that tho safe in the Sheriff's office was entirely too small. The Board therefore, eon- Bidoring that the taxes to bo eol- lected amonnted to over $200 and that Mr. Johnson was undur Vjo'ids to collect ai preserve this vast sum uf a duty which SluriH' Standley had refused to office of Tax Collector was entitled to a good safe. The price was limited to $825 with the view that a safe at that price Vi-ould be a good one, fit for any office in the Court House, and a good investment for the county. The fact that Mr.

Standley might have taken care of the had he remained Tax Collector lias nothing to do with the proposition. Ho resigned the office, Mr. Johnson Hccepted the responsibility and furnished the bonds, therefore Mr. Johnson's office, in protection of the County's money, is entitled to a safe. Furthermore every taxpayer that has examined the safe has e.x- prossed satisfaction at the action of the Board.

The Board of Supervisors do not need this justification at our hands, as the county needed the safe, and the taxpayers approve tho purchase. The strictures of our contemporary are drawn from a selfish it happens to be a Republican Board. Following are the prices for four different years of fifty Articles of common use. "THE election of Cleveland to he more precise, the adoption of tariff the United States would be mutually beneficial to the U.

S. and England." Of course the REPUBLICAN PKESS, in its extreme simplicity, cannot conceive Jiow two nations, can do, business with each other with mutual advantage to both." ''In our extreme our morbid intelligence" we cannot conceive "what advantage" it would be to mechanics of San Francisco to have ship loads of the products of the English iron workers, locomotives, steam and fire engines, mining and building machinery in its thousand forms, thrown upon their market, at a wage cost of one-half of that of their own product. Evidently these artisans in their "extreme simplicity cannot conceive where the "mutual advantage" to them comes in, for only a short time since they stopped the work on a large structure in that city because its builder was about to put into it structural iron, columns, and girders, the product, not of English workmen, but of their brother union associates of Pittsburg.
