Morro 1-0-1, Billy Haatke 1- 0-1 BY KEN HAMBLETON AND MARK DEROWITSCH Lincoln Journal-Star Nebraska wingback Riley Washington has grown tired of being known for playing his best football in April. This fall, he intends to do something about that "I want to be Mr. Fall," he want to do something when it counts." If Washington can transfer, his Spring Game successes to the regular season, hell play an important role in Nebraska's offense this falL Saturday, Washington caught four passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns a Spring Game Washington record) to lead the White team to a 40-34 victory against the Reds. Washington's final touchdown a 52-yard pass from Scott Frost tied the game at 27:27 in the third quarter. In the second quarter, he caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Frost and a 20-yarder from Matt Turman.

But Washington, who will be a junior in the fall, wants more. "I want to be the go-to guy," he said. "This fall, when we have third down-and-10, 1 want to be the guy the offense turns to. I dont mind the pressure." Split end Reggie Baul also had a big day. catching four passes for 184 yards (another, Spring Game record) and two touchdowns for the Red team.

His 80-yard touchdown catch from Tommie Frazier tied the record for longest scoring reception in a Spring Game. Despite the big passing day the two teams combined for 558 yards in the air Baul doesn't expect to handle the ball that much in the fall. "We'll do what we're expected to do block." he said. "We'll get the ball. I i TED KIRKAJNGOLN JOURNAL-STAR in a pass from Brook Berringer as longest scoring run.

The old mark of 84 yards was set by Keith Jones in 1987. Scott Frost's three touchdown passes for the Whites was a record and Tommie Frazier's 228 yards passing for the Red was a record. I-back Damon Benning suffered a sprained ankle early in the scrimmage. He limped off the field with 12 58 remaining in the first quarter. Washington suffered a sore ankle.

I-back James Sims suffered a bruised knee and was helped off the field. Backup quarterback Matt Turman suffered a hand contusion. Solich said that although Clinton Childs was pressed into playing I-back Saturday, he will probably be moved back to fullback in the fall. "Clinton learned the fullback position very well, and with his ability to play I-back, hell be a big help to us in road game situations (when NU can take only a certain number of players)." Solich said.

The White team, consisting of the first-team defense and No. 2 offense, won for the first time since 1989 and only the second time since 1981. Senior Matt Shaw, a Lincoln Northeast graduate and former NU walk-on tight end, was named the winner of the Tom Novak Trophy.

The award goes to the player who "best exemplifies courage and determination despite all odds in the manner of Nebraska All-America center Tom Novak, who graduated in 1950. Senior defensive tackle Terry Connealy was named the winner of the Guy Chamberlin Trophy, which is presented to the senior who "has shown by the play and contributions to the betterment of Nebraska football that he has the qualities and dedication of former NU Ail-American Chamberlin." The No. 72 jersey of senior offensive tackle Zach Wiegert was retired at halftime. Wiegert, who won the Outland Trophy and the Offensive Lineman of the Year Award last season, was selected by the St Louis Rams Saturday in the second round of the NFL draft. Coach Tom Osborne said some of the linebackers who had good spring practices were Ryan Terwilliger, Doug Colman and Phil Ellis and red-shirt freshman Jay Foreman.

To get a good look at his punt return squad, Osborne said the punt return teams were loaded with first-teamers and the punt teams with third- and fourth-team players. As for entertaining almost 80,000 people at the national championship celebration Friday night and the Spring Game Saturday, Osborne said he was gratified by the support of the fans. "To have that much interest is great But fans have always been a part of our success." The money raised from the $2 admission charge for Friday's celebration was donated to the university's library system. NU running backs coach Frank fensive line. The defensive ends are young guys, but we got some big plays from Grant Wistrom and Mike Rucker.

The secondary, I wonder about because if Tony Veland's knee cant hold up for a spring game, can it hold up for a season? "I was pleased with the linebackers. Phil Ellis and Doug Colman are experienced, and Larry Arnold and Jay Foreman made some big plays." Osborne wasn't quite as critical. "I still think we have a good de--fense," he said. DOX 5273, Lincoln, NS 63505 BY RON POWELL Lincoln Joumat-Star Nebraska Softball coach Rhonda Revelle has called freshman Ali Viola the most instinctive hitter she's ever coached. Revelle might have to add "timely" to her assessment after Viola played a key role in Nebraska's double-header sweep of Iowa State Saturday at the NU Softball Complex. The two victories scores of 9-2 and 4-2 raised the Cornhuskers' record to 34-16 overall and 6-4 in the Big Eight Iowa State dropped to 13-15-1 and 0-10 in the conference. Viola, a shortstop who redshirted last year, smacked a three-run double in the first game to cap a four-run fourth inning that broke a 2-2 tie.

She I finished 3-for-4 in the opener with four RBI. The double was Viola's 70th hit of the season, tying the NU single-season record set by Margie Ogrodo-wicz in 1988. Viola broke the record in her last at-bat AU Viola of the second game with an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give Nebraska an insurance run. Big Eight rules say the host school must be the visiting team in one of the games of a conference doubleheader. They probably shouldn't have told me about the record because I got overanxious in the box and started trying too hard," said Viola, who needed four more at-bats to get the record after tying it "In the end, that inn was more important than the record." Viola also has the single-season school records for doubles (19) and RBI (57).

And Nebraska still has 12 regular-season games left including two more against Iowa State today at 11 a m. and 1 p.m. Viola's team-leading .446 batting average and eight home runs put her in line for those two school records as well. Viola's teammate, Tobin Echo-Hawk, holds the record for batting average and Denise Day has homer mark (11). After coming off knee surgery last year, "I didn't expect this kind of season," Viola said.

"I expected to break some records sometime in my career, but not as a freshman." Gloria Von Rentzell's homer in the top of the fifth, her fifth of the year, was Nebraska's 30th this season, extending the school record she broke last week. The junior from North Platte used a north wind to send the ball over the fence in right-center field and give NU a 3-2 lead. Iowa State had taken a 2-0 lead on a homer to nearly the same spot by Stacy Nelson. "I wasn't thinking home run at all," Von Rentzell said. "I just concentrated on hitting it solid and moving the runners.

If I would've thought about it I probably wouldn't have done it" Freshman pitcher Angela Blackwood pitched the entire doubleheader for the Huskers and improved her record to 16-8. With the Huskers' other main pitcher, Stacie Stafford, out with spasms in her right (pitching) shoulder and back, Blackwood may do all the work again today. "Her (Blackwood's) best asset is her competitiveness, and that helps when you're asked to pitch every inning," Revelle said. "She's never had to be the workhorse before, but she's doing a good job with it" Blackwood finished the first game strongly after surrendering two runs and four hits in the first inning. She retired nine of the last 10 batters she faced and scattered three hits in the final six innings.

Three straight hits to start the game a single by Julie Osborne, a double by Angie Balakshin and a single by Debbie Nease produced a run. Balakshin scored on a sacrifice by Nelson. Nebraska defensive coordinator Charlie McBride said some of the big offensive plays were because of mistakes by the defense. "We just had some busted plays, and some mismatches at times," he said. "We got a lot of people a chance to play and just getting the experience on the field with a clock, a big crowd and the offense going all-out is a good experience. "Now, did we play great defense? The sixth-seeded Huskers defeated third-seeded Colorado Friday before falling to Oklahoma, the tournament's second seed. Saturday's match was stopped when Oklahoma clinched, and no doubles were played. Because of heavy rains, the match was moved from the Oklahoma City Tennis Courts to Woodlake Racquet Center. The move didn't bother the Sooners, however, who ended the Huskers' season at 9-15 overall and 3-6 against conference foes.

I was thinking about the Spring Game." But when he actually took the field Saturday, in front of 39,771 spectators. Foreman didn't appear to be nervous. He was in on 10 tackles and recorded two sacks to help the White team beat the Reds 40-34. Foreman's father, former Minnesota Vikings standout running back Chuck Foreman, made a living playing in front of sold-out crowds.

But even he was in awe of Nebraska's crowd Saturday. "I came here a couple of times last year, and I'd never seen anything like it," said the elder Foreman, who works as an account executive in the Minneapolis area. "And I can go back and say I'd never seen anything like it at a spring football game there were 40,000 people. Heck, the University of Minnesota averages 25,000 people to a (regular-season) game. "I'm just totally flabbergasted at the commitment the state of Nebraska has to this program.

Although Tom Osborne is the coach, this is the state's team and they act like it, too." More importantly, the younger Foreman's performance should help establish the Eden Prairie, native as the top strongside (SAM) linebacker when fall practices begin in August Foreman entered the Spring Game in a close battle with Larry Arnold for first-team duties. 1 played all right," Foreman said when asked about his play Saturday "I messed up on certain plays. When you mess up, you always think about that stuff. But overall I played OK." Foreman was at his best in the third quarter, when he spent most of his time bothering quarterback Tommie Frazier. Foreman hurried Frazier's pass for a failed two-point conversion attempt early ia, the quarter, and a few minutes later, recorded a sack for a 10-yard loss.

Foreman sat out last year as a red-shirt because Nebraska was already loaded at the SAM position, with seniors Troy Dumas and Clint Brown. He began his first spring practice listed fourth on the depth chart and ended it tied for first But Foreman said he just took advantage of a good situation. "When we started spring, I thought my chance was wide-open," he said. It will take more than luck for Foreman to earn a blackshirt (starting position) in the falL And if he remains at the top of the depth chart heading into the Sept. 9 season opener at Michigan State, Foreman doesn't expect to be worried about playing in front of large crowds.

"I can't wait until the real games begin," he said. "I talked to some of the older players and they gave me a taste of what to look for.
