SEPTEMBER 13. 1987 SUNDAY JOURNAL-STAR 1 HUS1CEHS VOLLEYBALL Y173I AQTICS Husker vollteyball team wins 1 I i i -wl ff By Paul Mammel With a cast of 11 mostly Inexperienced players contributing, Nebraska beat Penn State in four sets to win the Husker Invitational Saturday night The Huskers, 64 and rated No. 7 in the nation, roared past the No. 19-rated Nittany Lions 15-12, 15-12, 15-17, 15-7 before 847 noisy fans at the NU Coliseum. Earlier Saturday, Nebraska beat Central Michigan 154, 15-7, 15-2.

Kathi DeBoer, Nebraska's only senior, was named the tournament MVP, pounding a school-record 25 kills in the championship match. NU Coach Terry Pettit said the play of his younger players was a key. Only three starters returned from last year's NCAA runners-up. Saturday, the Huskers played four sophomores and three freshmen among its 11 contributors. Said DeBoer, "It didnt matter who was in there, we still stayed strong.

That's not always true of a young team." Said Pettit, "I'm starting to like this team. They do some nice things, the nicest is that they're tough." Improved serving and passing helped NU go 3-0 in the tournament according to Pettit Penn State, especially top hitt-ter Noelle Zientara, also seemed to tire in the final match, he said "For a freshman, it took her a long time to get fatigued," Pettit said of Zientara, who led Penn State with 19 kills. Besides Zientara and DeBoer, sophomores Carta Baker and Virginia Stahr, and junior Lori Endicott were named to the all-tournament team. Stahr slammed 24 kills in the championship match and Endicott set a school record with her 65 set assists. "I think Endicott fills the role Tisha (Delaney, an All-American setter who graduated) did last year and a little more," said Penn State Coach Russ Rose.

"She's quicker and more fun to watch." Pettit added that Endicott might be stronger physically, allowing her to run down more errant passes.
