Gill spent the second half in the training room and was taken to St Elizabeth Hospital after the game for overnight observation! A red-clad crowd of 78,406, Memorial Stadium's 122nd consecutive sellout wit-, nessed a brawling donney-brook from start to finish. Nebraska gained a 3-0 advantage on a 33-yard Kevin Seibel. field goal late in the first quarter, but fell behind 7-3 when Missouri opened the second stanza with a 66-yard drive, climaxed when quarterback Brad Perry flipped a 1-yard pass to tight end Andy Glbler. Eight plays after Gill was hurt with just 17 seconds left in the first half Seibel booted a 24-yard field goal to pull the Huskers within one point 7-6, at intermission.

Nebraska's first possession, after gaining three first downs at the Mizzou 11-yard line, ended when fullback Doug Wilkening fumbled. NoTD's In every game this year, except against Penn State which resulted in Nebraska's only loss, the Huskers have scored the first time they had the ball By halftime it looked like Nebraska's failure to convert on its first opportunity against Missouri might result in a similar fate. "But our players showed a lot of courage out there in the second half," Osborne said proudly. "They made a lot of mistakes today, enough of them to get beaten. It was encouraging the way they came back to win." The Comhusker coach had special words of praise for the courage displayed by I-back Mike Rozier, who was not expected to play after suffering a hip-pointer last weekend against Kansas State.

"Mike was hurting bad before the game and he certainly is now," Osborne said after the game. "He amazed me. I didn't expect him to be able to play and expected that if he did he wouldn't last more than three or four plays. We waited for a good time to get him in and see whether he could hold up. It's pretty obvious, from what happened, what he means to our team." Go-ahead touchdown Rozier, who had gained over 200 yards against both Colorado and Kansas State on back-to-back weekends, carried 17 times for 139 yards after his entrance midway through the second quarter.

He had runs of 15 and 28 yards before his "biggest" of the game. In the fourth quarter, with the Huskers trailing, 13-9, he dashed 27 yards to the Missouri one. That set up a go-ahead touchdown by fullback Mark Schellen to give Nebraska a lead it never lost i Reserve senior quarter-, back Bruce Mathison, who played the rest of the way after Gill's injury, also drew' accolades from Osborne. the first time Bruce has ever had to come into a pressure situation like that To do so and have us come away with a win was really great." After halftime and before Nebraska's final comeback, the Huskers fell further behind the Tigers. Missouri extended its 7-6 intermission lead to 104 with Brad Bur-ditt's 23-yard field goal with about seven minutes left in the third quarter.

That opportunity came when the Tigers recovered Wilkening's second fumble of the day. Within one Before the third quarter ended, Seibel hit his third fielder this one from 29 yards out to pun the Huskers within one point again, 10-9, going into the fourth quarter. Nebraska appeared to turn the momentum in its favor when defensive back Dave Burke intercepted a Tiger pass and returned it near midfield. But when he was tackled, he fumbled. Missouri capitalized on the extra opportunity by moving into field goal range for Burditt once more.

His 51-yarder gave the Tigers a 13-9 lead. That meant Nebraska could no longer move in front with afieldgpal. Mathison responded by engineering a 79-yard drive in 11 plays, highlighted by Ro-zier'sruntotheone. Wasted no time It didnt take the fired-up Huskers long to get on the scoreboard again. Two plays after the.

ensuing kickoff, NU linebacker Brent Evans picked off a Mizzou pass and returned it to the Tiger 19. Two plays gained three yards and then Mathison, on a keeper around the right side, galloped 16 yards for a touchdown. Seibel's extra-point kick gave the Huskers what appeared to be a comfortable 23-13 lead with just 2:36 left inthegame. But things got a little tense in those two minutes. Missouri came down to score a touchdown with 53 seconds left on another TD pass to Glbler.

hen Powers ordered a 2-pointconversion try, hoping that the short kickoff to follow could be recovered by the Tigers. That would mean a last-second field goal would spell victory for Mizzou. But two things went wrong for the Tigers. The 2--point try failed and NU wingbaek Shane Swanson pounced on the short kickoff, enabling the Huskers to run out the clock. That's when the defense knew we were in for a dogfight Actually, it was more of an alley fight than a football game. On trailing at halftime: "Coach Osborne always tells us if things dont go the way we want in the first three quarters, that we are the type of team that can put things together in the fourth quarter. He feels we are the best fourth-quarter team in the country, and I agree with him. It seems like every time we get on TV we give the guys a great show." Quarterback Bruce Mathison "I'm not the hero of this game.

I didnt play a really-good game, but the backs and the others played welL Everybody hung in there they are all heroes." On his 16-yard, game-winning TD: "It was a 21-Iso option. Some of the Missouri guys took the fake up the middle, and Jamie (Williams) made a real good block coming down. Then the corner was wide open and it was just a matter ot running in the end zone." Placekicker Kevin Seibel On the two field goals he missed, a 51-yarder and a 42-yarder: "I got under the long one too much. I hit the ball too low, but it was straight enough. I would have liked to make that one.

All the others I hit pretty well The one that went off to the left, I just allowed for too much wind." On the ice bag wrapped around his right foot after the game: "I tape my ankle so it doesnt wobble, and I taped it too tight today The tape was killing me. At halftime it was hurting so bad, I didnt know if I could come back. The right side of my foot is really sore." On preparing tor Missouri after last year's in which he missed on three field goal attempts and missed the only extra-point kick of his college career: "I prepared for this game quite a bit throughout the week. I thought we'd have at least a couple of cracks (at field goals), and I visualized what I was going to do so I wouldn't be uptight. I was hoping I'd get a chance." Linebacker Steve Damkroger On the play of Nebraska's defense: "Maybe we had a little bit of luck on our side, I don't know.

I suppose considering the field position, we held 'em pretty good. I think we played better toward the end of the game." Tight end Jamie Williams On the play of quarterback Bruce Mathison: "He came in fresh off the bench, but all our quarterbacks are well-coached. He knew what he had to do and it's just a matter of rising to the occasion and doing it You need leadership from a quarterback and he gave it to us." On the injury to quarterback Turner Gill: "I couldn't believe it It hurt me, I mean really hurt me. He didn't even have the ball it was unnecessary. He's a great buddy of mine.

I wanted to put somebody's lights out I'm not usually like that but when you see your buddy down, it hurts. "We weren't out there to make any cheap shots. We could have cried to the refs about cheap shots, but that isn't going to do the trick. We felt we had to be the aggressors and not let them dominate us. How can a guy cheap-shot us when he's lying on his back?" "Wingbaek Shane Swanson On his recovery of an on-side kick In the closing moments after Missouri closed to within 23-19: "We knew they would come up with something like that We knew they had two plays: they would either kick it to the side or lay it flat and let it creep up there.

We practiced it during the week. Coach Osborne said as soon as it was rolling to get on the ball Missouri hoped we would sit back and let it roll 10 yards, but we don't have to do that It's our ball until it goes 10 yards and then they can have it, too." Wingbaek Irving Fryar On trailing throughout most of the game: "I never thought we were going to lose during the entire game. I just knew we were going to score, even when Turner wasn't In there. Bruce is a good quaf-terback and everybody showed confidence in We went down the field like we were supposed to. "This win is just one more step toward the Big Eight championship, and then the national championship.

It's a big win and it shows us we can pull -out a close game." snowden 48 4i4 Malvern 3 8 2.7 Drain 3 6 2.0 1 6 6.0 Punting No. Yds. Ave. Adler A 270 45.0 Passing No. Co.
