She spent her summers working In Columbus a 20-minute ride with five or six others crammed in one car because of gasoline and tire rationing putting in at least 60 hours a week making radios for bombers. Graduating from I.U. in 1943, she started her career the next day at International News Service. "(The late) Hortense Myers was my mentor.

I wrote sports, among other things, and I had to use my initials E.J. Richardson because I was a woman," she said. She and James McKown were married in July 1944, and he was sent overseas on Christmas Eve. "He was always writing to tell me that he was coming home and to quit my Job. So I did." McKown said.

And he didn't come home, right? "So I got a job at Camp Atter-bury at the separation center in charge of around 40 soldiers. "And then he finally came home." The men went back to school or entered the job market, she said. And the women? "I don't think any of us were ready to Just go back (to pre-war life)," McKown said.

This is the best part putting the clothes, the models and the sites together. Day 1 As we photographed a couple of scenes at Union Station re-creating "the boys" going to and returning from war, we got incredible response from Veterans of Foreign Wars conventioners and their spouses. "Brings back memories," said one veteran from Iowa as he stole a glance at his wife. "I used to be young and thin like that," she said wistfully, and then laughed.

A trio from Baltimore stopped to share stories. "A friend brought out this 1944 newspaper clipping no one had ever seen. Her husband wanted to surprise her when he returned from overseas. He called up the local newspaper and had a photographer go around with them that whole day. It gives me chills just to think about it!" one woman said.

A veteran from Arkansas asked if he could run to his room and get his camera. I 4f is ci I Find the '40s in consignment shops The Indianapolis Newt Time for a road trip. Snoop Coop, 6419 Carrollton Ave. in Broad Ripple, carries a combination of consignment "Doesn't seem like it was that long ago," he said, smiling at us.

Day 2 After shooting at the Children's Museum, working in the old-fashioned kitchen in the fourth-floor "Mysteries in History" area, we moved to the Indianapolis Zoo. We planned to use zebras in the background to complement clothes with animal prints, but the zebras did not cooperate. Nor did the giraffes. So the enterprising models found a rock on which to perch and pretend they were the animals. However, the python did cooperate, much to the joy of one model, who asked excitedly, "Can I hold it?" Day 3 The final day of shooting was spent In Zionsvllle.

We had a blast taking photos in Proffltt's Emporium and the models loved the ice cream sodas Mr. Proffitt made. The rest of the photos were taken within a block of the soda shop. Week three The hard work was over. Or at least the physically exhausting work.

Now started the mentally demanding work the writing of a section's worth of stories, the printing of a section's worth of photos and the designing of a section's worth of pages.
