Tba largest, which la aa upright, about thirty by twenty laches, is from a study of water, rocks aad trees, made by bin while la the While Mountain tba pat ainatr. it fa yet far treat completion; but promises to be eoe of the moat affective and successful of uis artist's production. The motive ol tbia -work is staple aad BOprwteottoua; a in id -summer day at noon, a cluster of moss clad rock, a mountain brooklet, with cascade add pool, prisoeval forest tree, dad Ia leafy verdure, aod ix-Bring oa some of ther boughs gray ami trailing moss; the dead aod hark leas trunk of a 1 alien pioe, rifia of sunshine; patches of shadow, and an atmosphere tremulous with light and warmth making ap a picture full of floe effect and rare excellence. A bear, introduced into tbe foreground, is depicted in iteard's happiest manner, and, apparently, ponaeawe all tbe characW riiaka of these denize na of tbe wilder a. Within the Woods" is tbe title of an exquisitely beautiful oval, representing a relvet-aotiered ser with its doe aod fa waa, standing by a pool of water in tbe deepest recess of a forest, where the sunlight is softened by falling through umbrageous trees, and tbe dreamy atmosphere is odorous with the exhalations of fern and liliea, and all green things.

Silver birches, trembling aspen, drooping elms and other graceful tree, miugling their branches overhead, form a bower, within the shade of which the group of deer is appropriately placed. There is a lenderneM of feeling and delicacy of conception shown in this little picture which we scarcely hoped ever to fiod in Mr. Beard's works, and which is a new and most pleasing evidence of this artiet's versatility of talent Heard I also engaged on two smaller cabinet picture, which wiU foist his contribution to the Artists' Fund Association. One, which bears tbe quaint name of "Are you looking for any one in particular?" is in tbe artist's usual humorous vein, and represents three rabbits aiuinjr erect on their hauncuea at the loot of a sycamore tree, peering inquiringly over tufts of waving ter-n at an approaching settler, which, with cautious steps and a rather puzzled expression, is advancing through the tall grass towards them. Tbe dog is evidently unaccustomed to such receptions, tn is It the usual cualotn of rabbits thus to receive their enemy, except, perhaps, in Beard's pictures.

In the dixtance the sportsmen is observed apparently wondering at the curious acene presented to his eyes. The other picture is simply a white squirrel, with a remarkably handsome tail, among autumnal foliage. He evidently belongs to the best society, and is as proud of his snowy fur as some ladies are of their ermine cloaks. Bryant A Ptratton's Commercial Coi.i.eoe Evening Skssio.v. J. II. Mills sends us the second num ber of his serial, "-Chroniclo of the Twenty-First Regiment." It carries the history of the gallant "Twenty-Onceters" to the period of their departure from Elroira to the South.
