DOWLUiG By DICK MITTMAN Th Indianapolis New The Speedway doesn't even open for 500-Mile Race practice until Saturday, but already a mini-controversy has surfaced. It concerns construction of the front suspension on the 1991 Lola chassis. The one used In CART Indy car racing Is illegal in the USAC-sanctioned 500. Although the two bodies met in the off-season to come to a common agreement on car construction rules, this one apparently was overlooked.

As several car owners prepared for the past weekend's rookie orientation, they received a USAC bulletin stating new car front suspensions must be the same on the right and left sides. Under CART rules. Lola built a suspension kit (cost $28,000) that off-set the left side three-quarters of an inch. "I only know that If I had run with that Speedway kit. I was not legal." said Antonio Ferrari, whose driver.

Mike Croff, had the weekend's top speed of 214.731 miles per hour. "These cars are very sensitive. When you change the front end. you need to rebalance all of the suspension." Ferrari made new wishbone suspension pieces at his In dianapolis shop so Groff could participate. Dick Simon, who sent Hiro Matsuspshita through the rookie program In a year-old car.

chose to wait for Lola to provide new pieces for his new car. "Lola Is meeting the challenge," Simon said. "I'd rather pay the money safety-wise." Simon estimated the change will cost $12,000 per. car and with five cars entered that's a $60,000 expenditure. Roger McCluskey.

USAC's director of competition, said this was not a new rule. He said the bulletin was Issued because of the Lola offset construction. He added that he had no indication whether the '91 Penske chassis utilized the same type offset suspension. "It was a situation where there was a hedge In the rules and the manufacturer took advantage of It," McCluskey said. "It didn't work." A light rain ended rookie practice In the early afternoon Sunday.

Willy T. Ribbs. who drove 101 laps in two days, tried to complete his test, but a balky engine that stalled three times as he tried to depart the pits and the rain ended the effort. "They're teaching me a lot," Ribbs said. "Communication Is very Im IMSA CAMEL QT AT BRASELTON, 0.

"I said to him, you can run at this place. There Is a learning curve. There's a lot of pressure to be the first black. That doesn't mean anything: he's just a rookie." Six rookies participated In the three-day session. Davey Hamilton of Boise, Idaho, crashed In the fourth turn Saturday, destroying his three-year-old car.

He received only a bruised leg. Also taking part were Mark Dlsmore of Greenfield and Ted Prappas of Los Angeles. Matsushita, Dlsmore. Prappas and Groff all completed their final over-200 segment. Paul Tracy, who was the other rookie announced as a participant, didn't show up.
