Timing and "scoring officials wore numbers corresponding to the 33 cars on the track, switching seats whenever lead changes dictated. Now.

however, those vital functions and numerous others are performed by a sophisticated array of computers. This year, for Instance, the Speedway's primary timing and scoring system is fully automated for the first time. The DATA 1 Computer system is a complex mix of transmitters, antennas and personal computers. A small transmitter Installed in the left side-pod of each car sends out a unique signal, usually the car's number.
