For decades, mechanics depended on drivers to assess their cars' every shake and rattle as they hurtled around the 2 Vi-mile oval. Timing and "scoring officials wore numbers corresponding to the 33 cars on the track, switching seats whenever lead changes dictated. Now.

however, those vital functions and numerous others are performed by a sophisticated array of computers. This year, for Instance, the Speedway's primary timing and scoring system is fully automated for the first time. The DATA 1 Computer system is a complex mix of transmitters, antennas and personal computers. A small transmitter Installed in the left side-pod of each car sends out a unique signal, usually the car's number. Graham Chief, timing and scoring or two, then wait for the dust to settle for a year or two, and then somebody else will come along with an exciting idea." Graham predicted the next decade will see spectators with hand-held video displays of race standings. A fan, he said, might even be able to select a favorite driver and follow his progress throughout the race. Computers, long used In the design of cars, now allow pit crews to keep track of their entries as never before. Most of the teams competing at the Speedway have on-board computer systems that monitor everything from engine rpms to aerodynamic wing settings. Such data is downloaded into lap-top computers during pit stops.

The Galles-Kraco Racing Team, which has Al Unser Jr. and Bobby Rahal as drivers, uses six Toshiba T- 1600s. Each unit costs from $4,000 to $5,000. "The computer will do anything you want it to do," said Ian MacLean. a spokesman for Unser and Toshiba.

"You can monitor anything with it." MacLean said lap-tops are valuable not only in races, but in race preparations. For example, he said, crews now at the Speedway will have a much easier time setting up for the season's next race, the Miller Genuine Draft 200 in Milwaukee. "They don't have to go from ground zero or go back to their notebooks." he said. "They just key In the set-up from last year's Milwaukee race. It reduces setup time drastically." Even so, computers do have limitations.

They are located at the start-finish line. 20 yards past the start-finish line, at the pit entrance and exit and at the trackside entrances to Gasoline Alley.

Because the loop antennas are narrower than a car. only one competitor can cross a single antenna at any time. As a car crosses a loop, the resulting signal Is received by an IBM PS2 Data Manager. As a result, times and scorers can instantly learn a car's relative position in the race, its lap speeds and its time in the pits. The loop antennas outside Gasoline Alley record a car's retirement to the garage area.

"Our goal is to provide fast, accurate data for race fans and the media." said Arthur W. Graham, chief of timing and scoring for the United States Auto Club, which sanctions the 500-Mile Race.
