THE INDIANAPOLIS NEWS Pag 49 Thurtday, Dcmbr 8, 1983 STATE DEATHS Patricia Diemer DEATHS AND FUNERALS Ardath Burkhart Was Civic Leader Thomas Conner; Former Publisher Mrs. Wilson Services Set Mrs. Ralph (Wanda) Wilson, 62, Indianapolis, a retired teacher for Warren Township Schools, died yesterday in Lakeview Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Wilson taught third grade at Sunny Heights School 23 years, retiring this year.

She was a graduate of Fresno (Calif.) State Teachers Col--lege. Before moving here in 1944, she taught two years in California. She was a member of Linwood Christian Church and its Christian. Crusaders class and was a past senior preceptress of Psi Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi teachers fraternity. She was a charter member and leader of the first THEOS Chapter here, a Christian interdenominational fellowship group for widows and Conner died yesterday after a fall at his home.

A coroner's investigator said Conner hemorrhaged after the fall in his living room. His body was found by his wife. He was a lifelong Seymour resident and a graduate of DePauw University. Conner was publisher from 1963 until he retired in 1973 when the newspaper was sold to Freedom Newspapers Inc. i During his 28 years with the Tribune, Conner also was general manager, sports writer and in advertising sales.

He was a past president and member of the board of directors of the Hoosier State Press Association. Conner was a World War II veteran. I BROWNSBURG Paul "Pete" Moore, 67, retired employe of Eli Lilly Co. and former tour bus driver for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

McNelis worked 16 years for the post office, retiring nine years ago. He also was a painter for Circle City Painting several years. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carmel and attended Butler University. He was an Army veteran of World War II; Ser vices will be at 10:15 a.m.

He was a lieutenant correctional officer at North Point Penitentiary near Harrisburg and formerly worked at LaGrange (Ky.) Reformatory. He was a Vietnam War veteran and was master of Bedford (Ky.) Masonic Lodge 158. He also was a member of American Legion and Veterajs of Foreign Wars, both in Madison, and the 100th Army Division in Ky. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bedford Baptist Church in Kentucky.

Joan of Arc Catholic Church and also was a member of the Indiana Ordhid Society and the American Society of Clinical Pathology. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary and at 10 a.m. in St Joan of Arc Church. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m.

Joseph (Dorothy) Barrett, 59, Indianapolis, a retired steel sales worker, died yesterday in St. Vincent Hospital. She was a salesperson for Allegheny Steel Corp. 10 years, then worked a year for Steel Service Center and Ryerson Steel three years. She retired from Ryerson in 1974.

She was a member of East 10th Street United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion County Heart Association or a favorite charity. Edward Greenberg Edward Greenberg, 42, formerly of Indianapolis, died yesterday in an Evanston, hospital. Greenberg, a real estate developer in the Chicago area, received undergraduate and master's degrees in business from Indiana University. He was a lieutenant in the Navy, including serving as a line officer on the USS America aircraft carrier three years. Services will be at 11 a.m.

Mrs. Burkhart had received numerous honors, including the first lifetime achievement award from the Indiana Council of Fund Raising Executives and the Marion and Southern Hamilton county units of the American Cancer Society. She had received the Girl Scout Thanks Badge and administrative services award, B'nai B'rith woman of the year award in 1958, Alpha Chi Omega National Achievement Award for Community Service and Theta Sigma Phi TSP Award. She had been in each issue of "Who's Who of American Women" since the publication's inception in 1958 and was named a life member of United Way League in 1968.

Legion Award She received the 11th District American Legion distinguished citizen award in-1971 and the Tri-State University doctor of letters degree in 1973. She also received an Indiana Academy of Achievement Award in 1973, doctor of humane letters from i DePauw in 1979, and Indiana Central University doctor of laws degree last year. She received the National Junior Achievement bronze leadership award and Phi Kappa Psi national certificate of appreciation last year and was honored this year by the American Cancer Society and as a "Renaissance woman" by the Julian Center. She also received awards this year from the Indiana Public Broadcasting Society and Methodist tal Foundation. Her memberships included the Skyline Club, People of Vision, Alliance of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Columbia Club, Meridian Hills Country Club, Maxinkuckee Yacht Club, Manor House Club, Soroptimist Club, Indiana Federation of Art Club, Alpha Latreian, Indianapolis Opera Guild, Players Club, Family Support Center Auxiliary, Society of Retired Executives, Children's Museum President's Club and United Way Golden Key Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or the Marion County Cancer Society. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Meridian Street United Methodist Church. was a life member of Friends of Channel 20, which she helped form. She also had been a member of the national board of the Public Broadcasting Service. The'Vincennes native was a mu-. sic graduate of DePauw University. She taught music and art from 1927 to 1935.

To call her a fund raiser extraordinaire was not an exaggeration her record for improving services or facilities was a formidable one. Agen-. cies and institutions looked to her for expertise and other fund raisers watched and listened to learn. "She approaches responsibilities like it is her job," said Tom Rugh, a United Way of Indiana executive, in an interview in The News in. March.

"That is her career. She has an exceptional gift for raising money. She is very persuasive. She is absolutely fearless, and she doesn't take 'no' for an answer. She gets the job done." 'All Saddened' After learning of her death today, Mayor William Hudnut said, "We are al! saddened by the death of Ardath Burkhart an unselfish, hardworking, civic-minded person, whose dynamic leadership has resulted in many positive strides for the city of Indianapolis.

"For the many who loved her, her family, her friends in city hall, -across the state and in the business 'communityher contributory role in 'our city's progress stands as a fervent example and serves as an inspi-' ration. We shall miss her greatly." Mrs. Burkhart served on the board of the Community Chest from 1951 to 1954 and was chairman of the women's division in 1950, 1951 and 1956. She had served on the United Fund board since it was organized in 1957. She organized the United Fund League in 1957 and was president twice.

She was a former board member and president of Broad Ripple Parent-Teacher Association, League of Women Voters, Health and Welfare Council, St. Mary's Child Center, National Advisory Committee Women for Nixon 1972, Masquers of Civic Theater, Clowes Hall Women's Committee, Indiana Symphony Society, "500" Festival Associates and Indianapolis Day Nursery Association. She was chairman 10 years of the Charity Solicitations Commission and served on the Indianapolis School Board. On Planning Panel She also had worked with the Metropolitan Planning Commission, the NATO Conference on Cities planning committee in 1971 and was secretary of Indianapolis Sesquicen-tennial Commission. Mrs.

Burkhart was a former trustee of Indianapolis Foundation, English Foundation and Porter College. She was president of Porter from 1971 to 1974. She had served on the board of directors for Winona Hospital, Civic Theater, Junior Achievement, Hoo-sier Art Salon, Metropolitan Indianapolis Television Association, Women's Council of MITA, Meridian Street United Methodist Church, President's Advisory Committee of Mrs. Holwager Dies In Hospital Services for Mrs. Roy (Mary) Holwager, 71, Indianapolis, a retired clerk, will be at 10 a.m.

Found Dead In Parked Car Police today found the body of a Woodruff Place man in a parked car in Spades Park. Police identified the dead man as Thomas Barkman 28, 784 Middle Drive. The key was in the ignition and the car, a 1978 Chrysler Cordoba, was out of gas, police said. A section of garden hose had been connected to the exhaust system and inserted into the interior of the car through the trunk. Mrs.

Wilson also, was a member of the Indiana State Teachers and Indiana Retired Teachers associations, Hoosiers Organization of Professional Educators of Warren Township and the women's auxiliary at Community Hospital. She had done volunteer work the last three years at the surgery desk at Community Hospital. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Mrs. Josiah Stoner Mrs. Josiah (Freda) Stoner, 87, Greenfield, formerly of Indianapolis, died yesterday in Hancock County Hospital, Greenfield. She was a member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church. Her husband died last month.

She lived here many years and was a music and drama teacher at Metropolitan School of Music, which was incorporated into Butler University.
