That's the same hand he used this summer to split boards with. Does that mean with his new marshal arts blue belt hell be ready for Philadelphia's Darryl Dawkins? "I'm still not sure I'm ready for that" he replied with a laugh. "I may need a gun.

"I have nothing personal against Darryl who slammed him to the floor and injured his ribs last season), but I'm ready for the season. I'm ready for the physicalness of it and if Darryl happens to be there I'm ready for him, too." i King Signs Contract Kansas City Kings forward Reggie King has signed a three-year contract extension with the team. The agreement binds the third-year player from Alabama to Kansas City through 1986. brought him to camp in excellent shape, are his pluses. "To be honest, I feel like I a better player than I've ever been" in my life," he said.

"I've kind of structured my development through my career to try to be a little better every year. And last year I felt more confident and more skilled than at anytime on a basketball court "And this year when I came to camp I was a lot more relaxed. There's none of the anxieties I've always felt I think it's just because I'm very confident about what I can do on the court and what I can do for a team. "All my goals this year, basically, are to help contribute to the team's goals, which would satisfy me greatly if we achieve them, and just try to stay healthy." Bantom injured the index finger on his shooting hand in early workouts and has been forced to wear a protective wrap on it This effected his feel Mike Bantom a blue belter. Bird Scores 19 Points In 1st Half It was a busy night for National Basketball Association teams as six exhibition games were played around the country.

In New York City, Larry Bird scored 19 first-half points and Kevin McHale contributed 18 points to lead the Boston Celtics to a 104-88 triumph last night over the Milwaukee Bucks. Mickey Johnson scored 15 points for the Bucks. In the other half of the New York doubleheader, Jan van Breda Kolff's 3-point play with 1:38 remaining lifted the New Jersey Nets to an 89-82 victory over the New York Knicks. At Denver, Mitch Kupchak scored 28 points to help the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Nuggets 156-150 in overtime. Down by 19 points in the first half, the Nuggets scored 43 points in the third period and caught the Lakers at 138-138 as regulation play ended.

At St. Joseph, Mychal Thompson scored 28 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers edged the Kansas City Kings 112-105. Rookies Mark Aguirre (16) and Rolando Blackman (18) combined for 34 points to spark the Dallas Mavericks to a 119-109 victory over the Houston Rockets at Fort Worth. It was Dallas fourth straight win. In Santa Barbara, Purvis Short scored 18 points and Joe Barry Carroll 17 to lead the Golden State Warriors in a 105-89 victory over Utah.

By WAYNE FUSON, Sports Editor JOHN ROBINSON, whose winning percentage at Southern California ranks him second among America's active college football coaches, is a fun guy. "He takes his job, but not himself, seriously. He's a quip writer's dream. But he's also a helluva coach. In six years at Southern Cal he has won 55 games, lost only 9 and tied 2.

that's an .833 winning percentage. Only Barry Switzer at Oklahoma among active coaches has done better 85 11 3, .858. Although Robinson, whose Trojans are ranked No. 4 in one poll this week, will be all business when USC plays at Notre Dame tomorrow, he seemed pretty relaxed this week. Jim Perry, the Southern Cal tub thumper, has sent' along some of Robinson's quotes.

When someone asked Robinson about Stanford quarterback John El-way, who has signed a baseball contract with the New York Yankees as a right-fielder, John said he wasn't surprised. "His arm is strong enough not only to make the throw from right field to third in baseball but he could throw a guy out at third with a Obviously, Robinson has the nation's premier running back in Marcus Allen, who has gained 1,289 yards in six games, an average of 215 yards a game. "Marcus is a very competitive player," said John. "He's the kind of a guy you want to have the last shot in a basketball game. He's improving all the time.

At times last year he'd lunge forward and forget to bring his legs with him. His body lean would be too much. He reminds me very much of Bobby Moore who we had at Oregon (Robinson was an assistant coach for 12 years there). His versatility is unmatched. If we were in the old single wing days, boy, would he be something." Robinson, a rather rotund fellow himself, doesn't mind getting on his players who report overweight.

When freshman fullback Michael Alo reported 20 pounds too heavy, John says "We hounded him every day about how fat he was. But he wasn't flustered. You know what he said? 'Look who's The weight thing his own bugs him. "I write down 'tomorrow I'm gonna run and the next day I'm gonna swim', but the only exercise I ever get is Writing about Robinson was asked about the "matter of switching quarterbacks. After all, Gerry Faust, the new Irish coach, has been dividing the playing time between Blair Kiel and Tim The World's First Hand Held GAS POWER BLOWER Hundreds of applications! CLEANS eaves, screens, vehicles.

RAKES leaves, pine needles, debris. SWEEPS garages, driveways, patios. Koegel, but he has settled on Kiel to start tomorrow. "The worst thing you can do when you're uncertain at quarterback," said the Southern Cal coach, "is to give each one 50 percent of the work. You've got to make a decision.

Settle on one and give him 80 percent of the work. We dont believe in equal opportunity." He believes that young coaches have more of a tendency to make quick changes than older coaces. "The veteran coach looks at players and makes decisions about their futures much more slowly. Young guys make decisions on players about every 3 minutes. They want to decide in a snap if a guy is good.

I remember when I was a young assistant. I was always making decisions. I'd say 'Two or three minutes have gone by and we haven't decided on anything Somebody allowed that Southern Cal might have some problems with the weather at South Bend tomorrow. The temperature is supposed to be only in the 40s, quite a contrast from balmy Los Angeles. Second Best Record John Robinson "You have to accept bad weather," said John, "but you also have to prepare for it.

You can't ignore it. At Oregon one time our head coach, Jerry Frei, was a tough guy who thought we should ignore the cold when we went to play Air Force. He didn't believe in dressing warm on the sideline. We're standing around shivering like hell and we looked over at Air Force and they had bonfires going and heaters on the sidelines. All their guys were wearing mittens and hoods.

They only beat us about 49 0. Our guys got so they ran plays over to the other sideline to stay warm." What about USC's chances of going unbeaten the rest of the way? "We talk about it all the time. 'By we say, 'we can win 'em And, we can unless we screw up and we're capable of screwing up." Cubbie Again Lee Elia Asked if he would open his clubhouse between games of a double-header, Elia said, "It depends how we do in the first game." Asked why he took the job, he said, "I wanted to manage a baseball team. Maybe I should have declined and waited for (Yankee owner) George Steinbrenner to call." Because he was a member of the Cubs during 1968, he was asked what happened in the flop of 1969. "I left in the spring of 1969 so I couldn't answer that." Long-suffering Cub fans may grow to like Elia, who feels he is a Cub himself.

He spent the best days of his short-lived major league career in Wrigley Field. "I'm a Cubbie again," he said. Chicago ijlKm I'm A It's DarreH Again ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (UPI) Darrell Waltrip won his 10th pole position of the season yesterday during qualifying for Sunday's American 500 stock car race at North Carolina Motor Speedway and he says his success this year "blows my mind." "I don't know what everybody is doing," Waltrip said after his qualifying run. "We're just well prepared." Waltrip, driving a Buick, nudged Harry Gant for the top starting position on the one-mile track with a speed of 138.164 mph.

By DICK MITTMAN Mike Bantom, starting his fifth season with the Indiana Pacers, sees this year's team in a different light. "I think last year we were a playoff entry." he exclaimed. "This year we'd like to be a playoff contender. "I think we realize that we have to become a better team Last year's team, as good as we were at times, was only good enough to last two games in the playoffs. And we qualified for the last spot to get in.

"So I think there is a lot of room for improvement I think it is up to each individual to just concentrate on what our goals are this season and to work on them everyday. We sat down as a group and decided what our goals are for the season and I think if we all work at them we have a very good chance of attaining them." Bantom, team captain the past two seasons, averaged 110 last year as the Pacers won their opening game and never dipped below .500 for the year. That earned Jack McKinney National Basketball Association coach of the year honors. But this year the Pacers open with the Chicago Bulls, a foremost contender for the Central Division title, then play seven of their next eight games on the road. They visit New York, Philadelphia, Boston and New Jersey before hosting Cleveland Nov.

10, then travel West to Phoenix, San Diego and Los Angeles. Bantom feels the addition of Tom Owens and rookie Herb Williams at center and the conversion of Clemon Johnson to forward is important to the Pacer improvement. "It just makes it more physical," he remarked. "I think our big men are more intimidating 'now. We're matching up some teams with Clem, Herb and Tom, which makes for a very big lineup.

"I feel good about it, because I definitely feel to win in this league you've got to have a lot of talented big people. I think the best teams are the teams that have the most talented big people. You can't have too many. "You need as many as you can get. And I think the more big people we have that can play this game well the better team we're going to be." Bantom is one of those "big people" although at 6-foot 9, 220 pounds he isn't exactly a huge power forward.

He was brought up the Phillie way. I hope to do a lot of the things that were successful in Philadelphia right here in Chicago. It was important to have a guy who understands my way of thinking." There is little doubt that Green and Elia will be the masterminds in doing for Chicago what they helped do at Philadelphia. They have, Elia said, a respect for each other. "We kind of think alike," Elia said.

"We yell at each other a lot." The former White Sox and Cub utility infielder, who spent the last two years as Green's third-base coach, was asked if he would be as tough a manager as Green had been.
