Israel (UPI) Prime Minister Menachem Begin returned home today and angrily denounced reports that some U.S. officials would like to see him replaced with a national unity government committed to making peace with the Arabs. Begin faced possible threats to his leadership because of the widening rift with the United States after two days of inconclusive talks with President Carter in Washington. "The talks In Washington were difficult talks," Begin said at Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport. "We faced several demands which we could not accept." He refused to define these demands.

In Southern Lebanon, a French contingent of U.N. Some observers speculated Weizman was leading a move to oust the 64-year-old Begin. "Our government is a peace government," Begin said, responding to questions about Weizman's statement. "I've always been for such a (national unity) government and I'm still for it." He said the "main point" of Israel's peace efforts should be directed toward "how to revive support of public opinion in the United States and elsewhere." The prime minister made no mention of Israel's raid into Southern Lebanon or whether it figured prominently in his talks with Carter. In Southern Lebanon, an advance party of French troops of the U.N.

peace-keeping force moved into the battle-scarred coastal city of Tyre today. Hundreds of Palestinian guerrillas armed with Soviet-made AK47 automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launch ers lined the main route into Tyre. Guerrillas in machine gun-mounted Jeeps grinned broadly as the U.N. troops moved through the nearly deserted port city. Christian militiamen blocked the advance of Iranian U.N.

troops headed for the Litanl River, 13 miles north of the Israel-Lebanon frontier. At one point, the Christians fired over the heads of the Iranians to stop them from reaching their posltons, but no one was hurt. In a defiant speech before his departure from the U.S., Begin accused the Carter administration of changing its position on Israeli withdrawal from occupied Arab lands. He made clear that Israel still claims the right to retain control of occupied Arab lands and may soon resume construction of Jewish settlements there. 73 73 Menachem Begin 623 N.

had hinted that Begin's removal could end the deadlock in Mideast peace negotitations, although White House officials denied this. Gambino's death in October 1976 left a lucrative underworld network of drugs, extortion and other rackets without unified leadership. A number of law enforcement sources, who asked not to be identified, said the killings could mean a fight between the Gambino and Bonanno crime families, as well as internal turmoil for control within the Genov-ese family. The highest-ranking victim of the warfare was Pasquale Macchirole, a reputed lieutenant in the Genovese family. Macchirole, who had been missing for about three weeks, was found stuffed in the trunk of his 1977 Lincoln Continental in Brooklyn Wednesday. Police sources said it was unclear whether Mac-chirole's death was linked to the Tuesday slaying in lower Manhattan of New Jersey Teamsters official Salvatore Briguglio, who reportedly had dealings with the Genovese gang and was believed linked in some way to the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, the former Teamsters Union boss.

Two lesser crime figures were slain yesterday in Brooklyn. Americus Scotes. said to have "loose" ties to the Colombo family, was shot In the head and chest while walking his dog near his home. Patrick Presenzano, a reputed member of the Genovese family, was found dead in the same neighborhood beaten, shot and with his throat slit. The special election will be at 7:30 p.m.

in the Sheraton Motor Inn, 1-465 and Pendleton Pike, GOP county chairman John Sweezy announced today. McPherson, a member of the council 10 years and former business manager of Curtis Publishing quit the elective post last week to become administrative assistant to Mayor William Hudnut. Betty Stewart, a longtime worker in the Republican party, is the favorite of four expected candidates in the special election. Mrs. Stewart is a ward chairman in Warren Township.

Others who have indicated an interest in the council job are Thomas Roush, Barbara Churchill and Alta Barnett. Sweezy said the party organization will not support the election of any individual candidate, but will urge the 35 committeemen to select a replacement who will be a suitable candidate in next year's municipal election. The basic salary for members of the council is $3,600 yearly with additonal pay coming from the payment of $50 for each regular meeting attended and $25 for committee meetings.
