Entertainment LINCOLN, NE. JOURNAL MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1995 Lincoln could get new set of on news -by year's end Here's good news for all of you who believe that Lincoln is underserved by broadcast television, who are dissatisfied with local TV news coverage and who suspect that competition would make the situation a whole lot better. Take heart; The prospects look good for a second commercial TV station broadcasting in Lincoln by the end of the year. Well over a year ago, Citadel Com-- munications, owner of KCAN-TV, Channel 8 in Albion (now a satellite of KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa), petitioned the. Federal Communications Commission for a grant to move the station to Lincoln as a full-service ABC affiliate.

The FCC was inclined to approve the idea, with the under- standing that Citadel would still oper- ate a translator in Albion to provide ABC Network service to the area. Then things got interesting. Competitors started kibitzing. The NTV Network, headquartered in Kearney, Gled a competing application for the Albion translator, which Citadel didn't want to give up. And Busse Broadcasting, owner of KOLNKGIN-TV, filed a petition with the FCC for reconsideration of the grant to move KCAN.

Busse, of course, is the player with the most to lose in a two-station, Lincoln face-off. So where do things stand? Citadel executive vice president Ray Cole said in a telephone interview from Des Moines that the translator issue has been resolved. The only hurdle left is the FCC's decision on the If Cole's timetable holds up, the new station could be on the air as early as this fall, December at the latest What will a second commercial TV station mean for Lincoln? Well there could be both negative and positive effects. On the negative side, a new station could wreak havoc with Cablevision's channel line-up. If the cable system decides to carry KCAN (and the evolving regulatory environment may not require it to) in the basic tier, something else may have to go.

Then there's the obvious question of whether Lincoln needs an ABC affiliate in addition to Omaha's KETV, Channel 7. But if the current programming choices of the KCAUK- CAN combo are any indication, Lincoln viewers would probably have 'more varied choices in daytime, late night and weekends. 3 As for going head-to-head in Lincoln with KOLNKGIN, Cole blandly said, "Competition at all levels makes business better for everybody. We welcome the opportunity." The biggest potential benefit to Lincoln viewers will be the new station's, full-service news operation. "Lincoln is the largest city in the United States that is served by only one commercial television station," Cole said.

"This in spite of the fact that it's a big city with a major university. The Omaha stations do a good job of covering Lincoln news, but only from the vantage point of what their Omaha viewers want to know. We plan to offer better local coverage." I have been impressed with the nightly newscast on KCAUKCAN. The show looks progressive, the anchors bright, professional and attractive. And it conveys an image of Sioux TOM JOHNSON City as a happening place (all this a metro market half the size of Lincoln's).

But when fitness expert Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller) takes over and tries to exercise authority over the boys, they ultimately tip the scale on him in "Heavyweights," an action-comedy by Walt Disney Pictures. 5 'Heavyweights' takes yet another jab at the summer camp movie formula dictable time. In other words, you've seen' "Heavyweights" before it's a sum- -mer camp movie. "Heavyweights" style, for it is directed and co-written by Steven Brill the man who wrote the Disney hockey hit. Brill does bring a little bite and social commentary to the summer camp picture: Perkis is a smarmy combination of all those good-looking hucksters that populate -late-night cable, and there are some genuinely funny moments scattered throughout the movie. And, of course, all of this is supposed to be funny with just enough poignant moments introduced to keep the plot alive.

That's exactly what happens in "Heavyweights," which gets its hook from the fact that its outcast campers are fat kids being packed off for the summer by parents who hope to see them slim down. But Camp Hope is fun, not a sweat shop. That is, until egomaniacal fitness guruself-help promoter Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller) buys the place and turns the summer into one long infomercial designed to sell his products. The boys, led by Gerry (Aaron Schwartz) and wiseguy Josh (Sean Weiss), eventually get fed up with this spandex-clad dictator and turn the tables on Perkis and his European henchman Lars (Tom Hodges), getting some help from veteran counselor Pat (Tom McGowan) and camp nurse Julie (Leah Lail). You may not recognize the names of the young actors, but if you've seen 'The Mighty Ducks" youll recognize the faces.
