Tkiridqy, Augutt 25, 1977 THE INDIANAPOLIS NEWS Pop 43 Don't Call Gophers Clowns Phipps Goes 'Home' k'5-( i Bob Avellinl Mike Phipps Midboe anchors the defense at left tackle. "The defense is sound, but replacing the offensive line is never easy," added Stoll. "The line ranges from 22-year-olds to 27, but there's not a lot of experience there, mostly because of injuries." The oldtimer of the bunch is 27-year-old Dennis Fitzpatrick, who spent four years in the U. S. Navy before enrolling at Minnesota.

"Fitzpatrick told me he was really contemplating buying a condominium and retiring in Florida," joked Stoll. Stationed to the right of the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Fitzpatrick is 235-pound Holliman, the man they call "He's that kind of kid," explained Stoll. "Real uptight. The kind who bangs on the lockers before a game." Now, what "ever happened to that sword-swallower who used to play football at. -Rollin' Nolan Through 1976, Nolan Ryan of the California Angels had four seasons of 300 or more strikeouts.

"He said they thought they were going to lose me for awhile." Avery dropped 38 pounds to 148, but has worked his way back to a healthy 175-pound figure. Stoll had plans of red-shirting the prospect last season, anyway, and as Avery put it, "getting sick only made it a lot easier." Avery isn't overwhelmed by the pressure of following Dungy's show. "The people probably expect a lot from me, but it's something I don't really think about. I'm just gonna go out there and do my own thing like Tony did. Tony was a good dude.

He helped me a lot." The Gophers have a number of ex- erienced players returning. Defensively, Minnesota has nine defensive starters back, including three-year starters Mark Merrill and defensive end and linebackers Mike Hunt and Steve Stewart. "We're very proud of Hunt and Stewart," praised Stoll. "Both are big, mobile linebackers. We call them our 'Minnesota Twins' because they do so many things alike." Merrill dropped out of football after a disallusioning freshman year, only to return a season later.

Captain Steve By ZACH DUNKIN Sports Writer MINNEAPOLIS, and Bailey would have loved the Minnesota Gophers. Think of the promotion possibilities. An overzealous, 235-pound guard named "Psycho," who could set Sanford and Son up for life with a scrap pile of riddled lockerroom doors. A pair of "Minnesota Twins" who do their hitting on the football field instead of the ball park. A tackle who's an Army veteran considering retirement.

A college dropout. And a quarterback who survived a battle with death only to face an ominous grid challenge following Tony Dungy. By no means are coach Cal Stall's upper-division contenders clowns of the Big Ten football circus. "I'm not making any predictions whether we'll win one, none or all of our games," cautioned Stoll to the assembled group of Big Ten Skywriters, "but this might be the best team I've had here. I say 'might' because we've got some question marks like everybody else does." The most prominent riddle is replacing quarterback Tony Dungy, the two-time Minnesota MVP who set school CLEVELAND (AP) The biggest question about tonight's National Football League preseason meeting between the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns is what kind of reception the fans will give quarter-; back Mike Phipps.

The former Browns quarterback says he doesn't care, but a lot of people are wondering what his "homecoming" will be like after seven years of a strange love-hate relationship with the Cleveland fans. The Bears, 3-1, and the Browns, 1-2, are trying to prepare for the regular season, and Phipps, who will play the first three quarters against his old teammates, says that's all '-that is on his mind. "I'm really going to enjoy this," he said. "I hope I do well, but if I it won't be the end of the world. It's just an exhibition game and the exhibition season has never -been too popular in my mind." Phipps, traded to the Bears last winter for a pair of draft choices, is locked in a battle for Chicago's No.

1 quarterback job with incumbent Bob Avellini. It actually was Avellini's turn to start in coach Jack Pardee's rotation, but the Bears' coach switched so Phipps could get the majority of action against his old teammates. In Cleveland, Phipps usually was booed heartily by the fans and blamed for most ills the Browns were suffering. The big raps against him were he never approached the potential he showed at Purdue University and that the Browns traded popular receiver Paul Warfield in order to get a No. 1 draft choice they used to pick Phipps.

records for most yards gained most pass attempts, most pass completions, most yards passing and most touchndown passes during his four-year reign in Gopherland. Right now, sophomore Wendell Avery is the possible fill-in. "When you take Tony Dungy off the field he's hard to replace, he's certainly not a Dungy yet. I feel comfortable where he is right now." Avery undoubtedly feels comfortable just to be alive after a three-month bout with hepatitis last winter. "My father accidentally told me I almost died," said the young Texan.
