His Nebraska team will take the nation's No. 1 rating into next weekend's NCAA Championships at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Idealistically, with a powerhouse, Allen would rather count every score all three days rather than use the new NCAA format of starting from scratch on the final day. "If I'm the top-ranked team, I'd rather take a 2 12-point lead into the last day instead of giving everyone another equal shot at me," Allen said. You could excuse Allen for the logic. After all, he's the coach who's enjoyed the view from the top of the mountain the past two years. He'd hanker to keep that edge if it weren't for the For Allen, the fans are almost as important as his gymnasts.

NU women split games DENTON, Texas The Nebraska women's softball team split games Thursday in the Texas Women University Softball Invitational, blanking Sam Houston, 1-0, in the first game and losing 3-2 to Oklahoma in the second. Sandy Wolterman allowed two hits to take the win in the opener. The Huskers scored its run in the fourth inning when Shelly Scott singled lo score Rocky Candelario.

In the nightcap, the Huskers scored both their runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead, but Oklahoma came back with a run in the fourth and iced the win with two more in the seventh. Wolterman, now 3-2, suffered the loss. The Huskers will meet New Mexico and Southwest Missouri State on Friday. for the fans, then Allen is willing to sacrifice advantage for change. You've heard of the king of kings and the lord of lords.

Well, Francis Allen is the fan of fans. He's no sandbagger Allen may be an Olympic coach, but he's also his own public relations man. He's beat the drums hard and transformed a minor sport into a major sport. Madison Avenue should be so lucky. It isn't easy in this football-crazy state to turn fans on with a more sensitive form of art.

Allen has done it like Bob Devaney did it by giving Ne-braskans something for which to stand up and cheer. He didn't get to that point with conservatism. He got to it by going all out. There have been times when Allen could have played it closer to the vest like last year, when the Cornhuskers took nearly a four-point lead into the final day of the NCAA. "We could have coasted in the finals," he said.

"I told my gymnasts they had two choices. They could either go out and please the crowd or lay back and win easily." Nebraska look the chances, and set an NCAA scoring record in the process. "We really fired out of it," Allen said. "Some teams that don't have our dynamics might not have. We don't sandbag it.

We want our crowd to come back. If you want to have a sport, you better prove it to your home fans." Hartung view differs Allen is the first to realize his philosophy isn't the only philosophy. That's why he brought 1980 NCAA all-around champion Jim Hartung with him to a luncheon Thursday. "I'll give you my side, the coach's side," Allen said. "That guy over there probably has a different side." He was right.

Hartung admitted he doesn't like the new NCAA format. By starting over from scratch, Hartung said, you're increasing the chances for an upset. By starting over from scratch, Hartung said, "you're let-ling a guy with one lucky routine beat Phil Cahoy on the high bar when he probably wouldn't beat him one out of 10 times." Oh well. Hartung isn't the type to worry about such things. He's like his coach a born performer, an athlete who likes to say "That's Kntertainment" as much as he likes to say "We're No.

1." Hartung slated his case, but accepted the verdict. "Starting over," he said, "does make it a lot more exciting for the fans."
