Denton Record-Chronicle Section SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER BylERRY BARNES Staff Writer The.Bronco defense, burned by big plays earlier in" the season, put it all together Friday night in Greenville for a 21-0 shutout of the Lions in Denton's District 134A opener. Bronco coach Billy Ryan summed up the contest, saying, "The defense played a complete football game for four quarters." Denton defenders held Greenville runners to 19 yards in the second half and Lion quarterback Keith Boydston couldn't complete a single pass. The Bronco line kept Boydston under heavy pressure all night and forced him into interceptions in the second half. "We felt like the whole defensive team played an outstanding game," Ryan said.

"Of course any time that you get a shutout you have to get a good effort. It's' hard to single anybody out." ITWAS THE defense that set the tempo of the game. In the second defenders swarmed Boydston deep in his backfield and the Lion quarterback coughed up the ball. Denton recovered on Greenville's seven-yard line with 5:27 left in the first half- It took four plays but the offense moved in for the score. Halfback Randy Walker got three yards on two tough carries and quarterback Craig Brown sneaked up the middle for three more.

Brown's pass to Walker; moved the ball to the Greenville nine yard line but a penalty forced the Broncos back to the 24. From there, facing a third and goal situation, Brown stepped up into the pocket and calmly fired a touchdown pass to Dieb, splitting three defenders in the end zone. THE FINAL TOUCHDOWN came in the fourth quarter oh a three-yard run by Dieb, playing quarterback at the time.

The score was set up by the clutch running of Walker and McNeill, who kept busting the Greenville line for respectable gains. Brant Bomar kicked the extra point. The only serious threat by the Lions came in the second quarter, when aided by a penalty against the Broncos. Greenville drove to Denton's 10-yard line.
