A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University -at Delaware, Ohio, and a 1937 graduate of University of 'Boston Theological Seminary, he was chaplain at the hospital 10 years. He retired In 1980. Rev. Shepherd also was a retired minister of the Southern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served the conference 31 years.

A retired Army lieutenant colonel, he was a member of Hope Masonic Lodge. Order of Eastern Star and Scottish Rite. Survivors wife Billie Townsend Shepherd; son Daniel T. Shepherd; two grandsons. Dewey M.

Francis Hospital. Fisher, a self-employed carpenter 14 years, retired in 1982. Previously, he was a analyst for Ellis Trucking Co. 1 5 years. He was a member of Irvington Veterans of Foreign Wars post and had served in the Merchant Marines.

He was a Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Services will be at 1,1:15 a.m. Thursday in G. H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home and at noon in Holy Name Catholic Church.

Calling will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Maxwell was a retired brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve" and the youngest in a family of six licensed pilots known as the "Flying Maxwells." Formerly of Indianapolis and Terre Haute, Maxwell died Monday at a daughter's home in Martinsville. Known to many as "Skin Maxwell" because of his balding head, Maxwell flew as a combat pilot and held command posts in England and France during World War II and the Korean War. oc After leaving DePauw University, he Joined the National Guard and received his Army Air Corps pilot's wings in 1940.

In 1944. he was named operations brficer for the 409th Bomber Group in England and France. br Released from active duty at Hhe end of 1945, he soon resumed flying in the reserve program at Stout Field at Indianapolis. He became the first -commander of the newly activated 122nd Fighter Bomber Wing at Stout Field and subsequently Organized the Air National Guard in Indiana to a degree it became one of the best-trained and most operational-ready fighter organizations in the nation. After the Air Guard was Called to active duty in 1951, Maxwell became deputy commander of the 18th Fighter Bomber i Group, the last P-51 fighter, unit in Korea.

He engaged in 48 combat service missions in C-47 aircraft and 13 combat missions in P-51 Mustangs for 50 combat hoars. In 1953, Maxwell returned to the reorganized Air Guard and again took over as wing commander, with promotion to brigadier general. In June 1957. he was appointed chief of staff of the Indiana guard. Maxwell lived In Indianapolis until 1961.

when he was named base detachment commander for thtf Air Guard at Hulman Fiejd. now Hulman Regional Airport, in Terre Haute. While In Terre Haute, he was president and board chairman of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, campaign chairman and board president of the United Fund, vice chairman of the Jimmy Trent DANVILLE. Trent. 50. formerly of Speedway, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Weaver Funeral Home at Clayton with calling until 9 Trent died Monday In Hendricks County Hospital. He was a truck driver for Underwood Trucking Co.

at Brazil and previously was employed by McClean Truck Co. from 1964 to si 985. A Korean War Army vet-' eran, he was a member of Speedway Moose Lodge, Bridgeport Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. Survivors sons Wayne, Jeff. Jimmy Trent.

Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and the Terre Haute Elks. Aero and Sycamore clubs. He served on the executive council and was secretary of the National Guard Association of the United States. A graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, he was a member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board under the Department of Defense. He had been a member of the State Armory Board.

Maxwell's service awards Included the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, seven battle stars and the French Croix de Guerre. He also received the Indiana Distinguished Service Medal. He retired from military service in 1972. Since that time, he spent his winters in Florida and summers In Minnesota. He was the brother of the late Brig.

Gen. Howard H. Maxwell, a pioneer Indianapolis flier and former Indiana adjutant general. He was the great-grandson of John Maxwell, one of Marion County's first settlers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Children's Museum.
