On the second and third rounds, the Bears picked up possible replacements for wide receiver Dennis HcKinnon and comerback Leslie Frazier, who are expected to miss all or most of next season with knee injuries. Their second-round pick was comerback Vestee Jackson of Washington, one of the higher-rated players at his position, and on the third round they got Ail-American wide receiver David Williams of Illinois.

The American Football Conference-champion New England Patriots also had some good fortune. Though well-stocked with running backs, they grabbed Reggie Dupard of Southern Methodist on the 26th pick. Then, with the 15th pick of the second round, the Pats were still able to grab nose tackle Mike Ruth of Boston College, the Outland Trophy winner. The Philadelphia Eagles and new head Coach Buddy Ryan had a fascinating draft, marked by two risky choices in their first three picks. Their first pick the 10th of the draft was Keith Byars, the Ohio State running back who would have been among the first three taken were it not for a broken foot that makes him a questionable participant in the 1988 season.
