Tiger defensive end knows what's coming from Comhuskers Cornhusker opponent Xr Rill 5 By Ken Hambleton Steve Vandegrift expects nothing new, nothing more and nothing different from Nebraska. The problem is, when Nebraska does what is expected, it wins. "I don't think they've changed a thing in the four years I've seen them play," said Vandegrift, a four-year defensive starter at Missouri. "They run at They hit you hard. They don't try to hide anything you.

"It's like they say, 'Here's what we do. Can you stop And not many people do," he said. "We have at times over the years, but we haven't beaten them in a long time." NU has won the last nine games with Missouri Vandegrift, a senior from Grandview, has seen the Cornhusker offense from a different perspective than most players. His freshman and sophomore years, he played outside linebacker for the Tigers. Last season, he moved to de-' fensive end.

He earned honorable mention status in his first year at the position for his 62 tackles and impressive passrush. At 6-foot-5, 277 pounoX Vandegrift, who was recruited by Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, is tough on any quarterback. He has three sacks, two passes broken up and a fumble recovery this year for the Tigers. He is one of the keys to Missouri's status as third best against the rush in the Big Eight. "We should be a good defense.

We should be a whole lot better," Vandegrift said. "We've got almost everybody back from last year, and we didn't play all that bad last year." But total defense has been almost a disaster for Missouri this The Tigers were looking to challenge for a top three spot in the Big Eight this season. Yet they sit with a 1-2 conference record and a 2-4-1 record overall. The primary reason for the dismal season has been pass defense, Vandegrift said. Missouri is 98th in the country in pass defense and 66th in total defense.

"We play well for a while and then have a series of mistakes. Blown coverages, missed assignments we Just seem to lose concentration as a defense," Vandegrift said. "I don't know what tan get us over this problem. We've tried a lot of things. We played a solid first half against Oklahoma State last week.

Mistakes were down. Then, we lost concentration and they got us." Oklahoma State flew from a 15-7 half-time lead to a 49-21 victory over Missouri. "There were some good things about that game last week," said Vandegrift, who played with a cast on his right hand to protect some broken fingers. "I feel like I can play better because I have a different cast now. I can use both hands, and that's important for a defensive lineman." Another boost should come as a result of a team meeting last week.

There was a change in attitude that should help in Journol'Star library Missouri defensive end Steve Vandegrift (right) closes in on Nebraska quarterback Steve Taylor (9) during last year's 42-7 Cornhusker win at Columbia, Mo. doesn't look good right now. But we've got the right "There's been a lot of changes for the better since I first came here. We've got a great weight program and much better academic support program and good people in the football program. i "A good game against Nebraska would give us a good feeling, too." Coach Woody Widenhofer, Vandegrift said there was strong support for the four-year coach from the team.

"For us older players and for the younger players, too, we feel he's here to stay," he said. "The record speaks for itself. It's been disappointing. When I came here, I had dreams of four bowl games and we haven't gotten any. It the future, he said.

"We had too many attitudes of what can I do to change this season, rather than what can we do as a team to make us the best team. We want to win, we want to play better and the only way to do that is as a team, not individually," said Vandegrift. As for questions, about the future of Few thrills 1 this week for Top 20 By Herschel Nlsseiison Anodated Pm If you. like spine-tingling games that aren't decided until the last minute former New York Mets Manager Wes Westrum called them "cliff-dwellers" this may not be your week. You have to go all the way down to ninth-ranked Auburn to find a Top Twenty team that is favored by less than two touchdowns.

Clemson and South Carolina are the only other teams i in The Associated Press rankings that -are single-digit favorites. The main reason, of course, is that there isn't a single game between Top Twenty teams this weekend. But watch out for those Halloween hobgoblins. They may sneak up on Like seventh-ranked West Virginia, for example. The Mountaineers' 7-0 record is their best since 1955.

Since then, they are 1-30-1 against Penn State and 8-44-2 in the series, including being shut out 13 times. Despite its lack of success in the series, West Virginia is a 13-point favorite. Hambleton (Picks in boldface) Missouri at Nebraska (-17) Once a top rivalry when Missouri won 7 of 12 games from 1967 to 1978, but the Tigers haven't won In this series since. The Tigers have come close to being respectable but seem to manage to avoid a lump to the top four in the conference. Nebraska should be ready and confident. Iowa State at Colorado (-7) Colorado, by many accounts, should have beaten Oklahoma. But the Buffs have a tendency to let down the week after a disappointing loss, and this will be no different. Iowa State continues with a no-huddle offense led bv quarterback-Bret Oberg, who may be making the Cyclones better than expected.

No upset here but a closer game than the Vegas 1 line says. Oklahoma State (-40) at Kansas State This will give the Cowboys a chance to score 100 In a game. If K-State couldn't stop Ken Clark, lust think what Barry Sanders will do against them. If K-State could run an offense with any kind of consistency, It wouldn't be so bad. But it won't happen, life isn't fair, and OSU will cream the Wildcats.

Kansas at Oklahoma (-45) Another one of those great games to remember here. Kansas actually beat Oklahoma In 1984, but it will be 2084 before that happens again. OU got by Colorado on a prayer, but the only thing coming out of the OU-KU game will be a pew of a different kind. Ham's Hocks are 27-17 against his spread his year and 37-7 in picking the winners. Last week, the Hocks were 2-2 against the spread for the second straight week when Nebraska failed to cover a 55-point spread with Kansas State, and Oklahoma barely cut off Colo-, rado by three points.
