"Nothing we do would matter as much as a win," Parrish said. "But we're showing signs of getting closer." One of those signs is the play of quarterback Carl Straw, he said. Straw, a redshirt sophomore from Fair Lawn, N.J., has helped the winless Wildcats make a mark in the national NCAA statistics. He is 40th in the nation in total offense with 1,059 yards passing, and Kansas State is 13th in the country in passing offense. Last week, in a 70-24 loss at Oklahoma, Straw hit 22 of 29 passes in the second half for 288 yards and three touchdowns.

His total for the game was 27-41-0 for 336 yards. It was the second-most passing yards ever against the Sooners and the best passing performance against Oklahoma this year. It was the eighth-best one-game passing total for Kansas State. Although he has played just six games this year, he now ranks 11th in KSU history for yards in a season and needs just yards to move past former Wildcat quarterback Randy Williams for 10th place on the chart "It gave me a lot of confidence," Straw sail "We watched all the films of Kansas State roster No Name Pos Ht Wt Yr 1 Mark Porter 64 185 Sr. 48 Chad McKinnis FB 54 175 Jr.

He doesn't But it would be understandable, particularly if the newspaper were the New York Times. How would you like to be awakened at 5:30 am and asked to list all the stories on the front page of the Times? McWilliams had to, more than once, as a plebe at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y." But the experience didn't' sour the Lincoln High graduate on daily newspapers. "I can see the purpose- in that," McWilliams said during a telephone interview from West Point "A person needs to be well-informed." Lately, McWilliams, who's now a cadet corporal sophomore could turn to the sports page and find his name. He's started the last three games at quarterback for Army, which takes a 5-1 record and a four-game winning streak into Saturday's battle with Rutgers in Giants Stadium at the Meadow-, lands in East Rutherford, N.J. "Why else would we practice all week and go out and play every week?" Straw sat on the sidelines for two years, through a redshirt year and limited play last year, before he was given the starting position this year. He lost the job after four games, but was given the nod last week for the Oklahoma game. "That's what you give everything for in practice after practice," 'he said. "I want to be a starter, and I want to be a winner. I went through a hundred auditions.

"Now, since Coach Parrish is leaving, Fm auditioning for whoever becomes the new coach. So I want to give everything Tve got, and so does the rest of the team." This week, he's facing Nebraska. Next week, Oklahoma State. "A win in any one of these games is a dream that will never escape our minds," Straw said. "Our defense needs to play better.

We need to improve on offense and we need to take care of the ball. Think of how we'd feel to beat Nebraska or Oklahoma State or Colorado." Nebraska but opted to accept an ap: pointment to the Military Academy. He chose to spend his first year out of high school at the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in Fort Monmouth, N.J., where he was the starting quarterback on the football team. The experience at West Point Prep is intended to "prepare you better for your plebe year" at the Academy, he said.

Nothing, however, can prepare someone for the hazing by upperclassmen throughout that first year. "It's a trip," said McWilliams. Unlike having to be familiar with the front page of the New York Times, "a lot of the stuff makes no sense," he said. "You walk everywhere real fast' and everything is 'Sff" and Being an Army plebe isn't something you recaU fondly, McWilliams said. "But I knew could last through the year.

You just have to wait it out" Plus, he could always find solace on the football field. "Cadet life doesnt carry over to foot-ban," said McWilliams. In the huddle, the quarterback is in charge, even if he's a cadet corporal and those around him are cadet sergeants (juniors) and cadet captains (seniors). Ham hocks college picks Big Eight games By Ken Hambleton (Picks In boldfoce) Nebraska (-55) at Kansas State Nebraska is back on track, and If it plays defense for more than a half, this should rival the Oklahoma victory over the Mildcats last week. Kansas State has no past, no future and obviously no presence, but they can score 24 points and more than 400 yards against the Kansas at Iowa State (-15) Iowa State got to Missouri quicker than expected and should be rolling for this game.

Kansas apparently Isn't going to fold up the tent after a good showing against Colorado and might provide a test. This game should show the difference in directions of two programs that have been on the skids. Missouri at Oklahoma State (-17) OSU has an offense. Boy does It have an offense. Maybe no defense, but wow, what an offense.

Missouri Is offensive, but In a different way. Goodbye Woody Wldenhofer. The Cowboys are going to a bowl game before they go In front of the NCAA. Oklahoma (-24) at Colorado Barry Switzer said the Sooners' offense Is look Ing better. With Charles Thompson at quarterback, Oklahoma is the same old Sooner, threat.

Jamelle Holiewav lust doesnt seem to have the speed anymore. Colorado was obviously down for the Kansas game after losing to Oklahoma State, but the Buffs get up for this one and might even score a touchdown or two. Ham's Hocks are 25-15 against his spread his year and 33-7 In picking the winners. Last week, the Hocks were 2-2 against the spread. The Instinct told Ham to pick Iowa State, but somehow It was too hard to pick Woody's Wonders at Mlzzou, who failed miserably.

Colorado also couldn't manage to cover a 35-point spread against woeful Kansas. Sports Report Top 25 Team (record) 1. Southern Cal (M 2. Notre Dame (6-0) 3. W.

Although Straw had shared some time With freshman quarterback Paul Watson until last week, the Wildcat receivers have been the steady contingent in the K-State passing game. Three freshman receivers Greg Washington, Mike Smith and David Brooks plus sophomore Alan Frie-drich and senior Mark Austin, have been consistent all season, Straw said, Washington is the leading receiver in the Big Eight with 36 catches for 514 yards and six touchdowns. He grabbed eight passes for 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Oklahoma last week. "Greg has the speed and the blocking ability to help us a lot in the backfield," Straw said.

"We play a lot from the shotgun formation, and with the speed of our we can usually get something going in a hurry." terback, sophomore Otto Leone, and rallied the Cadets, who trailed Northwestern 7-3 at halftone, "I didn't think we were moving the offense, and I wanted to see what McWilliams could do," Young told reporters later. McWilliams rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns in his first start this season, a 58-10 victory over BucknelL But that wasn't the first start of his collegiate career. It came a year ago, against Temple, after four quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart all were sidelined by injury or illness. McWilliams suffered a dislocated finger during the 17-7 victory and didnt play the rest of the season. 1 Playing quarterback at Army is considerably different from playing quarterback at Lincoln High, and not just be? cause the Links ran from an I-formation offense when he was there, said McWilliams, a Sunday Journal-Star Super-State defensive back.

In some ways, it's easier. "The quarterback is supposed to be a leader, but at West Point everyone is trained to be a leader," McWilliams said. 1, 1980, top-ranked Alabama lost to Mississippi State 6-3, but runner-up UCLA suffered the same fate, losing to Arizona 23-17. "That day, -Arizona was wild-eyed," Coach Terry Donahue recalls. UCLA has finally made it to the top of the Associated Press rankings after 21 years. The Bruins' 38-21 victory over California, coupled' with Miami's 31-30 loss to Notre Dame, vaulted them to the head of the class. Arizona, of all people, will try to see to it that they dont stay there.
