"My style is completely different than Walter's. "I have tried to pick up things from him like running into the defenders, attacking people, not letting the tackier get Into your body. But each person's running style has to come naturally. You just do things on instinct" The Cornhusker I-back thinks the weight he added since last season "has helped me run a little bit tougher. I gained about 10 or 11 pounds.

I think that has given me more confidence and more punch when I run inside. I'm learning how to make those extra yards after contact" The 5-foot-U DuBose played at 183 pounds last year. Now he's at 194. "I still have the same speed," he said, "and I feel good. I've gained a lot of strength since I came here.

When I first came to Nebraska I was known as an outside, breakaway-type runner. Now, people consider me an inside runner and I can go in there and get some tough yards." Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne calls DuBose "a running back with great instincts, great balance and excellent speed. "It's hard to compare Doug to the other fine backs we've had in the past See DUBOSE on page 22 i I LINCOLN JOURNAL LIBRARY DuBose hurdles for yardage against Florida State earlier this season. Leg injury may sideline Husker kicker By Virgil Parker Journal Sports Editor Nebraska's Doug DuBose is regarded as one of the nation's premier running backs. He's also well-known for the gold chains he wears around his neck.

But DuBose wont be wearing them for good luck when the Corahuskers host the Oregon Ducks at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. His good luck charm will be in the stands. "My folks came out last weekend for the Illinois game," the Uncasville, native said. "My dad had to go back, but mom has stayed to watch the Oregon game. She's my good luck charm.

It seems like every time she watches me play, I have a real good game. I'd like to keep her here all season." With his folks absent, DuBose gained 129 yards not exactly a bad day against Florida State in the Nebraska opener. But the Huskers lost 1713. But with his parents on hand for last Saturday's Illinois game, DuBose gained an average of 7.4 yards every time he touched the ball, piling up 191 yards as Nebraska romped to a 52-25 victory. The gold chain collection began because of Walter Payton's nickname.

The Chicago Bear running back is DuBose's idol. "One day, a couple of Walter's teammates said his running style was kind of sweet. That's how his nickname of 'Sweetness' got started," DuBose said. "When I was in high school, a lot of the guys on my team, knowing I idolized Payton, started calling me Later on, my mom bought me a gold chain with a nameplate that says 'Sweetness' on it." DuBose said Payton has been his hero since childhood. "I figure if there is a guy to idolize, Walter should be the one," DuBose said.

"He's the all-time leading rusher in the NFL and certainly one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game." Another in DuBose's chain collection, one which refers to his jersey number, also has become a favorite. The charm hanging from it reads, "22 is No. 1." DuBose was No. 1 last season. Although starting just one game as a sophomore against Syracuse when senior Jeff Smith was sidelined by injuries DuBose earned all-Big Eight honors after leading the league with 1,040 rushing yards.

After two games this fall DuBose is well ahead of last season's 94.5 yards-per-game average. "1 really don't keep track of stuff like that," DuBose insisted. "I just go out each game and try to help the team win. If I only carried the ball one or two times and we won, that wouldn't bother me. I try to put stats, goals and stuff like that out of my mind." Does that mean DuBose doesn't have aspirations of becoming a Heisman Trophy winner? Not really.

"It would be nice to get more votes than any other junior in the Heisman voting this year and be able to say I am the highest man coming back next season," he admits. "But, right now, if I think about winning the Heisman, I dont think I would get anything accomplished. If the team goes out and we have a great season, I think all of those things will take care of themselves." Has DuBose studied Payton's running style and tried to imitate it? "That touchdown kind of locked things up because we were playing pretty good defense," Mizerski said. "Troy (Kanter) did a good job to call the right audible and pick out the weakness in the defense. "The offensive line also picked up the play scheme and made it work just about perfectly," Mizerski said. "You don't see a whole lot of high school teams work the audible that welL" Southeast linebacker Kory Lind intercepted a Tee Jay pass and returned the ball to the Yellowjackets' 23-yard line to set up Ranter's touchdown. "We needed that running game because Tee Jay frustrated us and played very hard and forced us to do some things we didn't want to do like trying to pass early in the game." Proof of Tee Jay's determination was the third-quarter return to the field of Richard Ellison, who had been taken to 'the hospital in the first half with an in-ijuredshin. LA was idle Thursday, but will host San Francisco on Friday night. By Ken Hambleton Prep Sports Editor A win by any other name is still a win. Just ask Lincoln Southeast football Coach Chuck Mizerski. "I was afraid of a letdown after the Lincoln East game (a 17-14 LSE victory last week) and the fact we were 3-0 and Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson was 0-3," Mizerski said. "And we did play a little flat But we were still able to win." And win convincingly, as evidenced by fourth-ranked Southeast's 18-0 victory over Tee Jay Thursday night before 1,608 fans at Seacrest Field.

The triumph didn't come without toil, however, Mizerski reminded. "They (CBTJ) played harder than heck," he said. Kanter broke loose on a 22-yard option run and the Yellowjackets were penalized for a late hit on the call, moving the ball to the 17 with five seconds left in the half.

Robert Miller, who kicked the winning field goal against Lincoln East last week, kicked a 35-yard field goal to give Southeast a 3-0 lead at the half. Lind added another touchdown with 1:35 left in the game, capping a nine-play, 44-yard scoring drive with a 10-yard run.
