Records secondary, Hurricanes.i set for NU favored OSU receiver says Cornhusker opponent K- iitn A 'itU tfMjY ft -v i 7 i 1 1 4 1 'v I i I i 4- I i i i I A J. By Ken Hambleton ilart Lee Dykes will probably break two Big Eight career records early in Saturday's game between Nebraska and Oklahoma State. If he catches two passes, which he has for the last 28 games In a row, heU become the conference's all-time leading receiver with 151 career receptions. Iowa State's Tracey Henderson is the record-holder. That record doesn't worry the 220-pound Cowboy wide receiver.

It's the other record that causes Dykes some concern. If he picks up 35 yards in receptions, heU pass former Nebraska Heismair Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers in career receiving yards (350). "I wonder how the fans at Nebraska win react to that happening in their stadium?" Dykes asked. "I suppose It will matter whether we're winning or losing. That's such a loud stadium anyway, I'd hate to have everybody mad at me.

"I never got to see Johnny Rodgers, but from what I hear, it's an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence with any records I get don't mean much to what we want to do as a team." A quick glance at the history of the Nebraska-Oklahoma State series shows that the Cowboys have not been victorious since 1961 Obviously, Dykes and his teammates would like to break that streak. "The chances of us winning are better than Dykes said. "None of us were alive the last time we won, so that business about 26 years of not winning doesnt matter. The fact that Fve been here three years and havent beaten Nebraska and Oklahoma does matter. We have a goal to win the Big Eight and maybe the national championship, and we have to beat them to get where we want to go.

That's all that matters to me." y-- "Dykes win certainly play a major role ij) anything Oklahoma State does. Despite double coverage from every defense the Cowboys have faced, he's caught almost 40 percent of OSU's com- pletlons this year. The last two seasons, he was responsible for at least 35 per cent of an OSU completions. Dykes owns or win own every receiving record at the Stillwater, Okla, school "I'm not the only guy on the team, and that's why we're good this year," said Dykes. "Barry Sanders gets the running game going, and that opens up things for us receivers.

We get the good passing from Mike Gundy, and that helps open up the running. "Last year (a 354) NU win), Nebraska shut down the running game and got the lead, and we had to pass. That's when Nell Smith (former NU defensive tackle) destroyed us almost single-handedly." Dykes said he doesnt expect double-, coverage from Nebraska, because the Cornhusker usually send all U-men on the attack. "They've got some great cornerbacks, and they usually don't feel they need to double cover me," he said "I know I have a lot of respect for Charles Fryar in particular. He's aggressive and sym-' bolizes what I think of when I think of the Nebraska defense." Things may not have changed with the Nebraska defense, but they have changed with the OSU offense, Dykes said.

"Gundy and our offensive line have that extra year of experience experience playing against Nebraska," Dykes said. "I remember back when Mike (Gundy) would have to ask me what routes I was going to run. Now, he controls the offense, and the offense has confidence in him. We have a lot more confidence as a team. Last year, they stuffed us the first four times we had the batt, and we froze and never got back in the game.

"Nobody had done that to us. Now, we know what that feels like, and I dont think well panic this time." There's also no panic for Dykes, who is the center of NCAA investigations at Illinois, Oklahoma State and possibly Oklahoma. "That stuff with the NCAA is behind us as a team and behind me as a per son," said Dykes, who testified before the NCAA investigation committees last spring and summer. "It's out of my mind and all forgotten now, because we have the chance of a lifetime with this football team this year, i "Other than that, I Just cant com-' ment on the investigations or the NCAA to-," lJTj i Joornot-Star library Dykes catches a touchdown pass against Missouri last year. Nebraska roster Nebraska review, preview By Herschel Nissenson AteodatedPnw Ki Miami-Notre Dame just another" game? Not quite.

It may be, as Duffy Daugherty once" said about a particular game, "not life'! and death. It's more important than" that" For understatement, we give you Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson: "I think'1 in the last few years the Notre Dame-" Miami rivalry has stirred Interest on a national basis as much as any other-game in the country." For overstatement, we give you Notre r. Dame Coach Lou Holtz: "You look at" the record, and Notre Dame has had" trouble even staying on the field with-' Miami the last four times they've played. Miami has just dominated the football games, and I dont know if we're capable of making it close this time." The last two games are the ones that stick in Notre Dame's craw. There was the 58-7 massacre in 1985 in Gerry Faust's swan song.

Notre Dame tried to get even last year and got whipped, again, 244. Those games were in Miami. This one's in South Bend, where No. 1 Miami is a 3-point favorite over No. 4 Notre Dame.

When It looks tiose, like NU playing unbeaten OSU four of the last five years, It's a blowout.

It should be about time for OSU to win one of these games, not having won since 1941. The Cowboys have counted on turnovers, turning 18 turnovers Into 67 points this year, but the Comhuskers nave taken care of the ball. This will be game decided by how many times Kansas State at Oklahoma (-45) After this game, the Wildcats get Nebraska and then Oklahoma State. "We're on the Bataan Death March," K-State's resigned Coach Stan Porrish said. "No one In the country has a tougher three games coming up than us." And no one has a worse record In college football than Kansas State.

K-State has the best passing team in the Big Eight. Now, guess why the Big Eight Is not a passing conference. Ham's Hocks are 22-12 against his spread this year and 30-4 In picking the winners. Last week, the Hocks were 4-1 against the spread. It should be noted the spread was somewhat conservative last week, though.

Colorado should be angry enough to make up for its miserable showing against Oklahoma State last week, and Coach Bill McCartney rarely shows mercy. Iowa State at Missouri (-9) Missouri Is playing quarterback roulette, but whomever the Tigers choose should able to find cracks In the ISU defense.

If ISU Is going to moke a move toward respectability and win the Telephone Trophy, this Is the time to do It, because Missouri Is very suspect.
