We havent talked about getting to here, but a lot of families don't get the chance at said Robb. Craig, who landed the kicking job this week, said he felt confident on his first goal.

"I knew when I hit it that it would go. But on the second one, that was just a of concentration on my part I Just kind of looked up a little. I thought it njght go even then but it missed by a lit-Hie," he said. "It was a surprise to me "that I was going to kick. I didn't know I saw it the next day in the Robb's 64-yard reception from quarterback McCathorn Clayton with 1:25 left in the second quarter set up the Huskerf final score of the half.

With NU starting from its own 20, he pulled in the pass near the Nebraska 45 and raced to the Illinois 16 before Todd Avery hauled him down. Four plays later, Doug DuBose dove in from the 1 to give Nebraska a 24-10 halftime advantage. "I knew someone (Illinois safety Ed White) was over there, but I saw the ball coming so I put my arm up. His arm was right across mine but the ball just landed right in my hands," Robb said. "I was supposed to delay a bit and take off when the corner came up on the fake.

"But I left a little early and that caused it to be a lot shorter play than it should have been." Illinois safety Craig Swoope credited Schnltzler for making the play work. "We had the perfect defense for it White thought he had the balL Unfortunately he didn't get a hand on it and the receiver made a good catch," he said. "You really have to give all the credit to the receiver for the concentration that he had." The touchdown reception was Robb's firstasaHusker. "I was supposed to run a crossing pattern, cross the seam and by then I'm to the tight end. He blocked my guy off and put me in the open hole," he said.

"I didn't keep the ball, but I suppose we will go out and celebrate a little Untight" TED KIRK SUNDAY JOURNAL-STAR Robb Schnltzler sets sail down the sidelines on a 64-yard pass reception that set up Nil's touchdown just before halftime Gornhusker Quotes DuBose says there was a hole every time he ran thought Jim (Skow) and Danny (Noonan) played real welL There's no doubt but what the other two put a lot of pressure on them. If I can get in the groove, we can get all three of us back there. "The pass interception was the biggest play I've ever made and it kind of capped a real good win for us. We needed that win This makes it all that more fun." flm Roth, offensive tackle "They were excellent players, but sometime they ran defenses that would make 'em or break 'em where they'd sell out with a slant A defense that slants makes a huge hole for the back to go through and that's just what we Bill Lewis, center "I got upset a couple of times with our calls -bootlegs and stuff like that down close to the goal line. But that's not my job.

All we had to do was run right at 'em and we'd run right over them." On his passing: "It wasn't too good, but things will get better in the future. I'm just happy we won the game. For my first start, I'm really happy." Von Sheppard, wingback On his 13-yard touchdown ran: "When I went around the corner, all I saw was one defensive back and he was being blocked. It's hard to visualize that In practice it's not that open. It just worked beautifully." Mike Knox, linebacker "We knew we could get a pass rush on these guys If we went at it full speed.

They tried to block us man-to-man. They cant block our three down linemen (Skow, Noonan and Spachman) that way. They've got to double one of them and have a back pick up one of the others." Chris Spachman, defensive tackle 1 "I was disappointed in the way I played. I plays, to see the expressions on his face, you could tell he was frustrated. He has to be, or else he's not human." Charlie McBride, defensive coordinator "I think on the first two series of the second half, the defensive line played better than in the first half.

But we just didn't capitalize on the turnovers. "I was surprised they didn't go deep on us more. But maybe they felt like we were protecting against the long passes. So they went to the shorter stuff. They live and die on the short, underneath stuff." McCathorn Clayton, quarterback On TD at the end of the first half: "We wanted to break their momentum.

If we scored we know we'd back them off a little. Coach Osborne bad that (pass) planned. We caught their cornerback coming up fast and playing the run. Doag DuBose, I-back t'Our offensive line did a great job of blocking and moving guys out of the way. Every time I tan it, there was some running room.

When you get a chance like that, you're going to break some long Every time I carried the ball, there was a crease there. I just had to hit the hole. "It (the third-quarter TD) was a 41-pitch play. The cut is either under or outside. You read the blocker.

I cut under and weaved my way through a few guys. It was a well-blocked play. I jumped over my tight end's head and made a cut, then cut across the grain and scored." Chris Can, defensive back "They have some tremendous physical talent, but they get distracted by other things, like their emotions and tempers. If they just lined up and played football, they'd be a lot better off. "I think we frustrated Trudeau.

After our big On a couple of muffed exchanges from the center to quarterback: "I wasnt in on that It's hard for the quarterback to get used to one guy and then have a different center come in to snap the ban. It's hard to say who was at fault I had left the game because somebody poked me in the eye." Brad Smith, defensive end was a real important game to get the feeling of winning back on our team. We know now that we still are a national contender. We didn't play very well in the first game. As a result in the back of some of our minds, there may have been some doubt that we were going to be as powerful as usual.

We needed to play real well in this game to give us a start for the rest of the non-conference and get us into the Big Eight games." Defense From pge1D Ii ivrnmrntmrn wiiiimiiiiijiiii i i ,1 win hjiuiumilb u. I Til, fell Mi -iithA itlilli urn ii tJ noma State. That's really a key in the season." Munford said Illinois "did a good job of protecting the quarterback for while, but then we wore them down and! started getting to him. When they had to resort strictly to the pass, we started running the stunts. The tackle would slant down and occupy both the offensive guard and tackle and the weakside linebacker would scrape off of him." Munford said everyone became concerned when Illinois closed to 20 points at 45-25.

"When we got. up 45-10 1 think people start started to relax a bit It was scary when they scored twice so quickly. But we got it back together and finished out pretty tough." Noonan said the stunts were made necessary by a three-man rush with eight defenders back in the coverage. "You need to run some stunts when you-have just a three-man rush. You need to catch them off balance.

We had this one stunt where I would loop around the tackle and that worked pretty good a couple of times. That's probably the most sacks for us since the UCLA game last year. And it really felt good." While the linemen were running their stunts, the defensive backs were employing a seldom-used man to man coverage scheme. "We're normally a zone coverage team," Watklns said, "but it was mostly 'man today. And it was successful "Against a team like Illinois, with their passing attack," Watklns "it's Impossible to play a zone, But when the first-team comerbacks went out of the game, the coaches put the zone defense in so the younger guys could get some experience. And you could see how Illinois started comeing back But we scored some more points and put the game out of reach.

"I thought the pass rush and the sec-, ondary coverage complimented each other," Watkins continued. "I was glad the guys up front were fighting their hearts out to help make our coverage easier." The Interception by Watkins was a spectacular one-handed grab. "I was kind of surprised because the ball was deflected. I didn't see it until the last second. I was going full speed.
