"I'd talk to Mark (Mauer) and go out and throw with him. He had a question "I'd say, "What's wrong with my passing? I think I passed well In addition to providing some positive feedback, Mauer would occasionally point out mechanical problems in Clayton's passing techniques.

Mauer did it in such a way that Clayton is convinced "he's an offensive genius. "I'd watch myself on videotape and think, 'He's Clayton said. Last summer, Clayton threw passes twice a day, four days a week, as much as five and a half hours a day. Still, the questions persist He's constantly asked about his passing, whether he can pass well enough to be a major college quarterback, even in a run-oriented attack like Nebraska's. In the season-opening loss to Florida State, Clayton completed one of five passes and threw one interception.

"When I got in against Florida State, I had no jitters at alL It was a good feeling," said Clayton, whose success running with the ball was dramatic. He carried five times for 97 yards. "It wasnt a good feeling to throw the interception," Clayton said. "But I wanted to make something happen, to put some points on the board. When Coach Osborne pulled me out, I didn't feel bad because I knew he just wanted to go with a senior." The senior, of course, is Travis Turner, who started the opener and will share playing time with Clayton on Saturday, according to Osborne.

He'd have no complaints Such a system of alternation could continue throughout the season, and if it does, "I won't have any beefs about sharing time," said Clayton. He speaks with confidence, believing he can get the job done. Going into his first game as a starter, "I feel comfortable," Clayton said. "All my offensive players feel conf i- By Mike Babcock Journal Sports Writer McCalhorn Clayton took some good-natured ribbing from a Michigan football recruiter during a rare visit to his home in Orlando, a year ago. According to Clayton, the recruiter told him: "You're redshirting, and you could have been starting for us." Clayton smiled, "Michigan plays in what conference?" he replied.

Nebraska's sophomore quarterback will be starting this Saturday, when the Cornhuskers, ranked 17th by UPI and 18th by the AP, play Illinois. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is 1:30 p.m. The start will be Clayton's first. Patience pays off His patience has paid off. Whenever it get tough as a redshirt, "I thought about the situation I'm in now," said Clayton.

"I always felt, 'One day it's going to happen. I'm going to get the shot where I can be an asset to the Saturday will be that day. During his recruitment, Michigan assured Clayton he'd spend one season backing up Steve Smith and then be given a chance to run the Wolverines' option offense, as a true sophomore. Clayton opted, instead, for Nebraska and its option offense. Given his speed and strength, Clayton seemed to be an ideal option quarterback.

As a freshman, however, passing wasn't one of his better options. That Clayton is starting against Illinois is a tribute to his dedication and the patience of Mark Mauer, a former Corn-husker quarterback and freshman coach. Mauer, now an assistant coach at Ball State, helped Clayton become a more than adequate passer. "He kept a lot of confidence in me," Clayton said. The criticism regarding Clayton's ability as a passer was based on his statistics as a freshman on the junior varsity.

Clayton completed only five of 18 passes for 51 yards. During his redshirt season, "people were saying I couldn't pass the ball, but WT miiiMirr DuBose (22) in Florida State game. Nebraska quarterback McCathorn dent playing with me, and that's one thing a quarterback needs, the confidence of the rest of his players. I feel really good about the Illinois game. The team has been playing well in practice, and it's going to continue that" The questions about his passing no longer bother him because "I don't have Clayton (7) hands off to Doug anything to prove," said Claytoa "I'll get the job done." Notes Though he doesn't collect gold the way NU I-back Doug DuBose does, Clayton has his share of gold chains.

"They're gifts from my uncles," he said. Injured NU guard recovers Tom Osborne had some good news and some bad news on the eve of Nebraska's Saturday football meeting with Illinois. The good news was Thursday's return to the practice field by starting right guard John McCormick. The 6-foot, 250-pound sophomore missed Wednesday's workout with a strained knee. "His return is a relief," the Corn-husker coach said. "We were getting short at guard." Stan rarker, who shares the No.

1 spot with McCormick, has been slowed with a bad ankle, while the top two left guards, Brian Blankenship (broken blood vessel in arm) and Tom Hoefler (elbow) also have been ailing. Starting defensive right end Gregg Reeves' condition was the id news. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a hamstring pulL Nebraska trainer George Sullivan said Friday that Reeves "hasn't been ruled out" of the Illinois game, but is questionable. Tony Holloway is listed as second-team on the depth chart. An annual feature following Thursday's practice was a "game" pitting the redslurts and freshmen.

The redshirts won, 21-0, as Jeff Wheeler, a walk-on from Urbandale, Iowa, ran 30 yards for a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage. Tyreese Knox and Don Lilly scored the other TDs. Kenneth Oavls Jim Wacker The players were suspended immediately for Saturday's game against Kansas State University. Wacker said he would have to wait until TCU officials consulted with Southwest Conference officials and the National Collegiate Athletic Association before deciding whether the suspensions would be permanent. He said the SWC and NCAA were informed Thursday night of the problem.

"The players turned themselves in and we turned ourselves in," he said. Wacker said the payments "never would have been discovered had they not turned themselves in" since they were made in cash. On Thursday, while Diamond was instructing the Strong jury, New York Yankees inflelder Dale Berra was testifying on the same floor of the courthouse that he bought cocaine on at least four occasions from Robert "Rav" McCue, 39, a Pittsburgh-area bookkeeper. It was the second time in as many weeks that Berra has been asked to detail drug usage by major-league baseball players at federal trials. The blond-haired McCue is a former controller for the Easter Seal Society of Allegheny County and part-time disc jockey. He was fired by the Easter Seals on the day he was indicted by a grand jury last May. Berra again contradicted his former the Pirates' Chuck Tanner, who earlier said he never suspected his starting shortstop was using cocaine.

In fact, Berra said, Tanner took him aside last year at mid-season and asked him if he had a cocaine problem. "I said, 'It's not a problem and I'm not worried about it' He asked me if I was having a problem with cocaine and I said, 'No, I Berra said. riTTSBURGH (UH) A federal jury today convicted Philadelphia caterer Curtis Strong on 11 felony counts for selling cocaine to major league base-ban players, ending a 14-day trial filled with sordid disclosures about the national pastime. The jury acquitted Strong on three other counts. The jury of nine women and three men deliberated nearly 10 hours before returning its verdict on the 14th day of Strong's trial in the courtroom of Judge Gustave Diamond.

Two other charges against Strong' were dismissed on a prosecution motion earlier in the trial. Strong, 39, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $25,000 fine on each guilty verdict returned against him. Strong was the first of seven men indicted May 30 in Pittsburgh oh charges of drug trafficking in baseball to stand trial. The indictments were brought after a 13-month Investigation that included the grand jury testimony of at least a dozen current and former ballplayers who had been granted immunity from prosecution. The six, besides the star running back, are defensive player Egypt Allen, linebacker Gerald Taylor, defensive end Gary Spann, strong safety Marvin Foster and defensive tackle Darron Turner, Wacker said. The players "turned themselves in" after a team meeting Thursday, Wacker said. Taylor is a junior and the others are seniors. During the meeting, Wacker said he discussed "the importance of honesty and integrity" and afterward one of the six approached the coaching staff and confessed to taking cash payments. Wacker said he could not say who the player was.

Later, the other five players also told the staff they, too, had taken payments, he said "The kids turned themselves in," Wacker said. "I doubt that ever happened before in the history of the NCAA."
