96 Lawrence Pete MG 6-1 270 Jr. ByKenHambleton The dreams have changed; for Jason Tyrer. "Ever since I was a little kid, I've dreamed of playing for the Cornhuskers," he said. "All that red In the -stands. All those crazy fans having a balL The great, great teams, The great tradition at Nebraska.

It was all a dream for me." But the emotional decision was overridden by a financial decision, and now Tyrer is dreaming of beating Nebraska, "I was asked to walk on at Nebraska, but Kansas offered me a scholarship, and it was all but impossible to turn down the money for a college education," he said. "So now, Nebraska is my No. 2 favorite, and this weekend 111 do everything I can to stop them." Jason Tyrer, a true freshman from Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, is the younger brother of Brad Tyrer, who was a starting defensive end for the Cornhuskers in 1986. Like Brad, Jason was an all-state foot- i ball player and was named to the Kansas City All-Metro team. Brad Tyrer, an All-Academic All-Big Eight player, Is now a sales representative in Kansas City, Mo.

"He was the one who got me all brainwashed about Nebraska, and I loved it," Jason said. "We used to go up getting. We just dont have the numbers of people here to sit out with a redshirt year or to work your way through a season as a backup. "Coach (Glen) Mason is trying to build a program, and in the meantime, a lot of us are going to have to grow up in a hurry." Six freshmen are scheduled to start for the Jay-hawks this week. Of the 49 recruited scholarship players for Kansas, only 19 are upperclassmen.

"By the time all of us freshmen are juniors, I think we're going to have a very competitive team," Tyrer said." As for playing against Nebraska, a team Kansas hasnt beaten since 1968, Tyrer said there is no pressure ontheJayhawks. "Nobody expects anything out of us," he said, "Nobody expects us to win or even play close. But we have played three good games this year where we were in the lead after the first half. We ended up losing, but I think that more than anything, it's because we have to learn to win. The attitude, the work habits and getting the breaks to go our way are all things we need to learn together as a team.

"And when you try your hardest you have a chance of doing anything." to as many of his games as we could. I gained a lot of respect for Nebraska." Jason said he is going to try to earn that same respect for himself and Kansas this weekend in Lawrence. He was named a starter at strongside linebacker this week for the Nebraska game. Injuries to redshirt freshman linebacker Lance Flachsbarth and Paul Friday moved Tyrer from a backup linebacker and special teams specialist into the starting lineup. Tyrer said he came to love his role on the special teams.

Breaking downfield on a kickoff to make a tackle was a lot of fun, he said. "You get to be kind of reckless and the specific duties of a special teams player arent very limiting," he said. "It's a lot of fun. As a starter on the defense, though, you have to maintain your assignments, and you can't just be running around trying to knock everybody's head off. "I guess I'd like a little more time to adjust and get myself ready, but I'm excited about the chances I'm Kansas roster USC seeks revenge in Pac-10 battle No Name Pos Ht Wt Yr 56 RussBowen OG 6-3 245 Fr.

o. 18 Oregon vs. Redshirt freshman likely Mizzou starter COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) Redshirt freshman quarterback Brad Fitzmau-rice probably will start for Missouri in Saturday's game at Kansas State, but injured first-string quarterback John Stol-lenwerck has not been ruled out, coach Woody Widenhofer said Thursday. StoUenwerck has been hampered by a sprain in his left shoulder, which forced him to miss most of a 55-0 Missouri loss to Miami last Saturday.

The injury also kept Stollenwerck from "throwing the football with authority" during the week, Widenhofer said. "I dont see him (Stollenwerck) being a starter, unless he starts throwing the ball with a lot of steam on it, then he might," Widenhofer said. Fitzmaurice has not started a game at Missouri, but he has been listed as the Tigers' No. 2 quarterback since spring. The game in Manhattan, marks the opening of Big Eight Conference play for the 04 Wildcats and the 1-2-1 Tigers.
