SEPTEMBER 17.1985 LINCOLN, NE. JOURNAL Manager expecting Pershing to rebound By L. Kent Wolgamott Journal Writer Pershing Auditorium ended its fiscal year last month with a decline from 1983-84 in both number of events and total attendance. But Pershing Manager Doug Kuhnel says advance bookings indicate that the auditorium should rebound and have a strong year in 1985-86. From Sept.

1, 1984, to Aug. 31, the auditorium was host to 146 events on 335 days, with total attendance of 432,670. The year before, the auditorium was host to 156 events on 371 days, with total attendance of 544,270. The largest drop in attendance came from concerts, which were down 20,000 in attendance, and from conventions, consumer shows and trade shows, all of which had substantial declines, Kuhnel told the Pershing Auditorium Advisory Board Tuesday. "This year business is off all over in buildings of our size," Kuhnel said.

He said he expects auditorium usage to rebound because: September and October schedules appear strong; several shows have holds for November; and scheduling for January through March already is getting full. already very tight. "We've got more concerts going into the fall, we've got more tentative holds going into the fall and we're picking up some of shows on rotation," Kuhnel said. Pershing held its first concert of the year two weeks ago with Night Ranger. That show drew a disappointing crowd of fewer than 3,000 people.

Only about 2,000 advance tickets have been sold for the second concert of the month, Ratt, scheduled for Wednesday night. Kuhnel attributes the attendance problem to ticket prices being too high for the bands' junior-high- and highschool-age fans to afford. "I think they've hit a limit as far as what they can charge for a ticket," Kuhnel said. "The price is being dictated by the groups. We have little to say in what they charge for a ticket, but $14 to $15 a ticket is just too much money." Some acts, such as Neil Diamond and Tina Turner, are guaranteed sellouts no matter what price they set, but for shows that depend on the younger audience, Kuhnel said, prices simply have gone beyond many budgets.

Two other shows announced at Pershing are Heart, Nov. 18, which Kuhnel said will have relatively high ticket prices, and Gallagher, the Showtime TV comedian, Nov. 19, whose tickets prices will be "real reasonable." Kuhnel said he hopes to schedule one more concert for November. Pershing also is hoping for large crowds at its family-oriented shows in the fall, including a return of Sesame Street Live and an appearance by Alvin and the Chipmunks Nov. 9-10.

Good attendance at the Alvin and the Chipmunks show is likely to help influence promoters to bring a circus back to Pershing, a project the auditorium staff has been working on for the past year. Lincoln Magazine draining KUCV budget, manager says The current issue of Lincoln Magazine may be its last, Union College President Ben Wygal said Tuesday. The arts magazine and KUCV Public Radio program guide has been losing $30,000 to $40,000 annually and has become a significant drain on the station's $240,000 annual budget, Wygal and new KUCV Manager Melvin West said. "I hate to see it die," Wygal said, noting that efforts are being made to revive the publication, perhaps with a broader format and distribution under a different sponsor. Mayor Roland Luedike, Chamber of Commerce officials, representatives of the Lincoln Arts Council and other groups have been invited to a "brainstorming" session at Union on Thursday to explore alternatives.

The magazine's future also will be discussed Sept. 30 by the KUCV Community Advisory Board. Lincoln Magazine began as a KUCV program guide five years ago, shortly after the station expanded from a 10- watt campus outlet to a classical music and information public radio station for southeast Nebraska. In September 1984, Lincoln Magazine expanded from quarterly to bimonthly publication in an effort to offer a more current program guide and attract more advertisers to help defray the costs. "We've paddled this canoe by ourselves for a long time," Wygal said, not- Police summary Monday Fraud-forgery ......3 Animal Jailings 14 Assault.
