Until injuries slowed him down, Redwine himself was building credentials which would have made him a strong Heisman By Mike Babcock Staff Sports Writer NORMAN, Okla. Jarvis Red-wine doesn't have a Heisman Trophy ballot, but if he did, he'd cast it for Southern California's Charles White.

That's no reflection on Oklahoma's Billy Sims, the incumbent Heisman winner and UPI's Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year. "Last year I probably would have said Sims, but this year, I'd have to say it's White. He's a good all-around back, and he's the leading rusher in the nation," Redwine said. Nebraska's junior running back might well have voted for himself three weeks ago. Not that he would, of course.

Redwine's modesty is in sharp contrast to Sims' occasional bursts of arrogance. But prior to the Missouri game, the one in which Redwine suffered a knee injury, he had out-rushed Sims by more than 100 yards (889 to 778), and averaged 7.6 yards per carry to Sims' 6.4 yards. Redwine maintained his rushing lead one more week before a 128-yard effort by Sims against Kansas while Redwine was hobbling through seven carries for 27 yards against Kansas State pushed the elusive Sooner ahead to stay. Now, instead of being a showdown between two candidates for the Heisman Trophy, Saturday's Nebraska-Oklahoma game will provide Sims with the opportunity to showcase his talents as he continues to press White for this year's award. Redwine will be trying to top 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

He needs only 23 to reach that mark and become the sixth Nebraska running back since 1950 to achieve such success. However, a sore left ankle may have something to do with whether or not Redwine achieves that goal "Every back wants 1,000 yards, but I'm not going to jeopardize the team just to get it," Redwine said.Tm so close, but you can put all that stuff aside when the team's going good. "If we win the next couple of games, I'll be happy," he said. Redwine probably will not open at I-back. "He's still not 100 percent, but he's feeling better, and we'll take him along with the idea of playing him," Nebraska head Coach Tom Osborne said after practice Thursday.

Isaiah Hipp, NU's all-time leading career rusher with 2,894 yards, is scheduled to start. Hipp has been slowed by a toe injury and gout this fall, but "right now I feel the best I've felt since the Utah State game," he said. Hipp had his best afternoon of the season in the Huskers' opener against the Aggies, rushing for 167 yards and scoring three touchdowns. By Ken Hambleton Staff Sports Writer Yes, Moe Iba is talking about defense. Nebraska basketball has almost become a synonym for defense. In the past five years the Nebraska basketball team has posted the fourth best defense against scoring in the nation. Last year the Huskers were ninth in team defense. "Defense is going to be as important as ever," NU assistant Coach Iba said.

"We're not where we were a year ago, but if we have another 10 days like our last 10 days have been well be okay." But (he Huskers won't have another 10 days to prepare as they open the 1979-1980 collegiate basketball season Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. at the Bob Deva-ney Sports Center against Windsor, OnL "Our first problem is going to be getting the ball off the defensive boards," said Iba, a 10-year assistant, who is coaching NU, while Husker head Coach Joe Cipriano recuperates from surgery. The Nebraska sports imformation office said Cipriano may appear at the Husker opener. "We're going to be facing a lot of teams with more height, and we're going to have to overcome that problem with defense," Iba said. "We might even play some more zone this year than we played last year.

Of course, one time would be more than we played last year," he joked. "I'm not crazy about the zone defense, but the kids are sold on'it and I'm sure if we find ourselves in the situation where we need a zone we have the people to run it," he said. A speedy team with returning starters, 6-7 junior Andre Smith, 6-0 junior Mike Naderer, and veterans Ray Collins, Jack Moore and Eric Williams, along with junior college transfer Tim West, "should be able to press better than last year's team, because they want to press," Iba said. "We don't have a Brian Banks who could handle the other team's top scorer, and we're hot as good a defensive team as we were because of that fact. But we could develop into a good defensive team with consistent improvement," he said.

Iba said that two years ago the Huskers averaged 18 forced turnovers, and the difference last year, was that NU averaged 10 forced turnovers. "If we want to score and offset any lack of defensive balance, we're going to have to force the turnovers," he said. "That not only keeps the other team from scoring, and off the offensive boards, but it can set up a lot of scoring for us. "If we can score more points on the conversions, we'll be able to outscore a lot of people." Windsor is one of the better teams in Canada, Iba said. "I'm sure it's going to help them that they'll have three games by the time they play us," he said.

The Lancers, 0-2 after losses to Central Michigan and Saginaw Valley, face Utah Friday. Michigan, Kansas State and Utah fill out the Windsor U.S. tour. Last year Windsor was 18-15 overall and 13-2 in the Ontario University Athletic Association. The Lancers returned three starters and eight lettermen this season.

Sophomore forward Stan Korosec scored 36 points in his first two games this season, while Vince Landry and Phil Ilermanutz have scored in double figures in both games. "It'll be good to see someone else," Iba said. "We've accomplished a lot with the practices and the Red-White game, but nothing like we can against an opponent" "I'm sure we'll sell a lot of scorecards, because we're going to be using a lot of people," he said. Iba noted that a number of players will also be playing in the "reborn" Junior varsity games. NU's JVs will face the AAU Salem Oilers, led by former NU standout Bob Grattopp, at 5:15 p.m.

Taking a look at the rest of the Big 8 choking up going into the big game, but it's not something I planned," he said while getting a heat treatment on his sore ankle early in the week. "I wanted to end the season on a good note. "I'm really down on myself right now. I want to be healthy, and it's killing me because I'm not. "I hadn't thought much about playing against Sims, but I thought a lot about the Oklahoma game and it being on national television," Redwine said.

His Heisman Trophy aspirations may have been deferred for a season, but he's tried to maintain some equilibrium with regard to the situation. "I guess what's bound to happen will happen," Redwine said. Opinions diverse Everybody, it seems, has a different opinion on who will win the big game Saturday at Norman. United Press International's Fred McMane likes the Sooners, 28-25, while The Associated Press' Herschel Nissenson picks Nebraska, 24-20. Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder picks Oklahoma by one point, but, on the other hand, Harrah's Las Vegas book calls the game a toss-up.

And, finally, writers and broadcasters who cover the Huskers are unanimous in their support for NU (see story below) but, presumably, scribes in Soonerland are displaying the same type of unbiased support for their team. pected at Owen Field to watch Nebraska and Oklahoma decide which will go to the Orange Bowl the winner will and which will go to the Cotton Bowl for New Year's Day. "We are definitely headed for the Orange Bowl," Sims told a ire service reporter on Wednesday. The Sooner speedster leads the nation in scoring with 22 touchdowns and he's rushed for 1,259 yards, 282 of which came last Saturday in a game against Missouri. "I think the Missouri game got us prepared for Nebraska because it's going to be tough and physical," he said.

"This will be my last game at home, so I'm going to give it my best." Sims is well behind White in rushing yardage the Trojan's workhorse tailback has gained 1,609 yards in nine games. But neither back can match Redwine's 7.1 yards-per-carry averaged Last year, when Nebraska upset Oklahoma 17-14, Redwine and his wife Frances sat in Memorial Stadium and dreamed of a trip to the Orange Bowl. He didn't learn until after the Missouri game a week later that he would not be allowed to travel with the Huskers to Miami because of his having transferred from Oregon State. Redwine reached the zenith of his first season with the Cornhuskers in the Colorado game when he gained 206 yards. But since that day he's managed only 88 yards.

Bremser, the booming voice of Nebraska football on Omaha's KFAB, is like 15 other Nebraska media specialists.

He's part of a clean sweep of home-state journalists who believe the unbeaten Cornhuskers will defeat once-beaten Oklahoma Saturday in Norman. Bremser, however, deserves a special place on the platform. Last year, in this very newspaper, Bremser predicted a 17-14 Nebraska win over Oklahoma, 48 hours before kickoff He was, obviously, on the nose. this season. Dean Sukup to the rescue." Nebraska 17, Oklahoma 14.

Tom Ash, Omaha World-Herald "I picked Nebraska to win the league before the year started because of depth. The Huskers will find something that'll work, But this game won't be decided on a fumble on the three-vard-llne. OU will hold onto the ball." Nebraska 17, Oklahoma 14. Randy York, Lincoln Journal and Star "For the first time since Barry Switzer's been the head coach, he feels Nebraska's got the most talent. It's driving him crazy.

That's why he's making so many stupid observations," Nebraska 28, Oklahoma 14. Larry Porter, Omaha World-Herald "I've said Oklahoma every year, Including last year, so It's good to break from tradition. Nebraska's defense probably won't have a 10th straight game holding the oppo nent under 100 yards rushing, but it'll stIH be great." Nebraska 24, Oklahoma 17. Mike Babcock, Lincoln Journal and Star "Billy Sims-Sational becomes plain old "BS," or, as the queen said: 'Let them eat Nebraska 27, Oklahoma 15. Chuck Sinclair, Lincoln Journal and Star "Ok lahomas offense may be on par or at least near Sooner teams of the post few years but the defense Is not.

This Is one time the offensive production wont be able to keep up with the defensive debt." Nebraska 31, Oklahoma 21. Steve Sinclair, Omaha World-Herald "After watching Oklahoma at Missouri, I was thinking Oklahoma. But after reflecting for a few days, I've changed my mind. The time may even be right for a minor blowout." Nebraska 28, Oklahoma 14. TV'S SPORTS VJE9EKD Other predictions include: Don Gill, KLIN, Lincoln "If this Nebraska crow hits as hard as last year's crew, Billy Sims may not hold onto the ball all day.

If Redwine can't go, it's Nebraska, 17-14. If he can it's: Nebraska 28, Oklahoma 14." Tim Moreland, KFOR, Lincoln "I don't think Oklahoma can drive the ball on Nebraska like it did against Missouri. Big play touchdowns come harder against the Black Shirts. Nebraska can push the ball an OU, though." Nebraska 27, Oklahoma 17. Dale Hansen, Channel Omaha "Dean Sukup hasn't let Nebraska down before.

There's no reason to believe he will now." Nebraska 24, Oklahoma 21. John Knicely, Channel 4, Omaha "I think Nebraska will fall behind, lust like the Huskers did against Iowa and Missouri. I expect OU to score three touchdowns, but It won't be enough." Nebraska 23, Oklahoma 21. Wayne Dxubak, Channel 7, Omaha "I was one of two guys last year to pick against Nebraska. I'll stay with the same score this year, but reverse the winner." Nebraska 21, Oklahoma 17.

Mark Ahmann, Channel 10, Lincoln "Both teams have scored a lot of points and they're both ereat teams with great traditions. But the Black Shirts have to be the difference." Nebraska 17, Oklahoma Is. Chuck Stevens, KLMS, Lincoln "I hope Redwine gets a chance to match talents with Sims. But I'd like to see Hipp come through lust as much. The defense Is still the difference In these games." Nebraska 14, Oklahoma 10.

Joe Patrick, WOW, Omaha "Man-tar man, Nebraska's better. OU's offense may be a little more consistent, but Nebraska's defense Is better. Oklahoma's hurt and coming off a tough game at Missouri." Nebraska 24, Oklahoma 17. Virgil Parker, Lincoln Journal and Star "Not only may the scare be -the same as tail year, but the outcome will be decided for the same reason a tough Nebraska defense which will cause tome crucial Oklahoma turnover. For the third time "I wasn't all that confident last year, though," Bremser admits.

"This year, I am because of that hellish Nebraska defense. I'm not so sure they aren't the best defense in the United States. "I don't remember ever watching a Nebraska defense, even during the national championship years, that could shut people down like these guys do. "Why, Iowa State, Kansas and Oklahoma State couldn't even get started. They were lucky to make a first down.

They'd make 5 yards, then lose 10. "For the first time since 1971," Bremser says, "Nebraska has a better football team than Oklahoma. I think Oklahoma is living on contrived confidence. They're whistling past the graveyard, just to get themselves In the right frame of mind. "I watched the Oklahoma-Missouri films and I didn't have one-tenth the problem following J.C.

Watts with the ball as 1 did following Thomas Lott," Bremser admits. "Watts Is good, but he isn't that quick-darting, jackrabblt on the options like Lott was. "Those freshmen fullbacks cant come close to Kenny King either," Bremser says. "I'm no Karnak the Magnificent, but Nebraska could put on some kind of floor show Saturday, especially if that defense can devout Oklahoma. And If Jeff Qulnn has a decent day, Katie bar the doorl" Bremser was going to predict Nebraska 31, Oklahoma 17, but he's changed his mind to a more modest 27-17 Husker Football Stealers vs.
