SHULL Many years will pass before commercial television develops sufficient bravura to do biographies of the real bomb throwers of the American Revoluton.

Poor old Tom Paine may have to remain in a shadow for another 200 years. But, progress, albeit ever so slow, is being made and there are indications the networks will progress beyond the Washington-and-the-cherry-tree strata of myths before July 4, 1976. For the 1975-76 season, for instance, public broadcasting will have a series on the Adams family, including "Snowball Sam," the Boston coffee house provocateur. But more immediate, CBS this winter will have a dandy biography of Benjamin Franklin done in four 90-minute dramas. The CBS project will have Franklin drawn in full dimension, including his free-wheeling sexual mores which caused him to father 13 illegitimate children and engage in dalliances even after he'd passed the three-quarter century mark.

FIVE BENS The achievements of Franklin in all fields were more than a single actor possibly could handle, and that's why CBS has hired five actors to portray him in the four dramas. Beau Bridges and his father, Lloyd, will work as a team entry, portraying Franklin from early manhood to middle age. Richard Widmark will be Franklin in his 60s when the statesman went to London for one last best effort to head off revolution in the colonies. Eddie Albert portrays Franklin in his 70s, when Franklin went to France on behalf of the revolution and seduced the entire nation figuratively and many of the women literally. Finally, Melvyn Douglas will portray Franklin in his 80s, aged, ailing and dying.

The series is being produced by Lewis Freedman, with Glenn Jordan directing. The four scripts are by different writers. Mod Squad News Tonight Show News Name Of The Game News Mission: Impossible :00 103 4S :00 Untouchables Wide World Special THURSDAY TV PROGRAMS eastern Standard Tim IP Joined In Progress Eddie Albert and Alexis Smith Freedman held an advance screening in Hollywood of the show starring Albert which Freedman will use to lead off the series even though it is chronologically third. "I dislike biographies that start off with little boys," Freedman said in brushing aside objections to showing the series out of order. So how was the show? It's loaded with production values including a big-scale reception at the court of Versailles and a giant leap forward for Hollywood in creating authentic historical drama.

But that still leaves it considerably behind the British, who are the masters of historical pieces. The script by Howard Fast is laced with humor and an interesting level of naughtiness. In the drama, 72-year-old Franklin is living with a beautiful widow, Madame Helvetius (played by Alexis Smith), in Paris in a style entirely too fine for the tastes of many of the revolutionary leaders over here. Zealots are supposed to suffer, you know. But behind the veneer of flirtations and socializing, Franklin was busy conniving and Intriguing.

In 15 months, he managed to maneuver the French government into open participation in our revolution. Were it not for Franklin, George Washington might still be marching his little army around the boonies of New York and New Jersey in a game of fox and hounds with the Redcoats. Under heavy makeup, Albert did a fine job of creating the wily Franklin. And Miss Smith made Madame Helvetius' affair with the aged diplomat seem credible. In those days, there wasn't the awful premium on youth of today's society.

And bless Freedman and Jordan, they had Victor Buono creating King George III for what he was a Germanic slob haunted by personal devils. After the screening, I asked Alexis Smith, a mighty handsome woman in anyone's century, how she managed to get herself psyched up to portray a woman in love with a balding, paunchy, stooped, gout-ridden septuagenarian. "We rehearsed for three weeks," she said. "And Eddie Albert as he usually is looks pretty good. Then we went into makeup and I took a look at Eddie in that wig and pillows and I said, 'Get yourself a new As an actress, I had a lot to overcome."
