t- Nov. 11, 1979 Lincoln, Sunday Journal and Star 5D Lindquist ties Husker theft record i By Mike Bobcock Staff Sports Writer MANHATTAN, Kan. Ric Lindquist said he's not the superstitious type. He leaves that to Nebraska defensive coordinator Lance Van Zandt. That's why Van Zandt has members of his Corn-husker secondary pick out a tree and walk around it.

starting to the east, the morning of each football game. Saturday, Van Zandt had a question for NU's defensive backs. Among them was Lindquist NU's starting left corner. "After our superstitious walk, he asked, 'Who doesnl have an interception this said Lindquist. The sophomore from Plattsmouth admitted he didn't, and "he (Van Zandt) said it sure would be nice if our left cornerback got one today," Lindquist said.

With 12:27 remaining in the first half of Nebraska's 21-12 victory over Kansas State Saturday afternoon in KSU Stadium, Lindquist got one. He picked off a Darrell Dickey pass at the K-State 49 yard line. Tics Blahak-Stepbenson record But Undquist wasn't satisfied with one interception. He pilfered two more Dickey tosses in the fourth quarter to lie a Nebraska record for interceptions in one game. have ends like L.C.

Cole and Dan Lindstrom putting on the pressure," he said "And they were also doing a good job of containing the outside stuff." Lindquist didn't mind the defense continually having to come to tho rescue of Nebraska's error-plagued offense, Saturday. "I wouldn't say it was frustrating. Usually it (the offense) does a good job of controlling the ball and keeping us off the field for a long time. We just made up for that time today," he said Walk was half a mile Lindquist made up for the time in a big way. He responded by producing the second three-interception game of his football career.

The other occurred during his senior year at Plattsmouth High School, when he stole three passes in a game against Arlington Lindquist wasn't superstitious about Saturday's performance he was just doing what Van Zandt told him to do after the morning's stroll. In fact, the difficult part of it all may have been finding an appropriate tree around which to walk "We walked about a half-mile east down the highway from our motel to find it." Lindquist said That's not superstition It's just good coaching. Right Lance? Joe Blahak swiped three passes in the 1970 Kansas State game, and Dana Stephenson, the Huskers' season (8) and career (IS) record holder, intercepted three in the 1969 Colorado game. Lindquist is a 20-year old sophomore, playing his first season as a starter, but he claims he came away from last week's cliffhanger at Missouri much older and wiser. "I felt like I grew up and gained three years of experience in about 53 seconds last week," said Lindquist His new-found maturity came in handy Saturday against Kansas State, a team which put up 27 passes, one of which produced a 26-yard touchdown on the Wildcats' second snap from scrimmage.

Defensive rush help Passing teams "make it interesting for the defensive backs," Lindquist said, placing special emphasis on the word "interesting." "It's challenging to play teams like that." The 5-10, 175-pound Lindquist gave credit to Nebraska's withering pass rush for his record-tying effort Each interception came in a different secondary coverage, with Dickey being pressured by the Huskers' defensive front. K-State CommentS- Quarterback Darrell Dickey "Nebraska's defense is really good. They never lose their cool and they keen doing what they're supposed to do.

"That's what I didn't do today. I tried to make things happen that weren't there. "That interception Nebraska returned for a touchdown is a perfect example. I dropped back and sprinted out of the pocket. I thought about running out of bounds, but then I thought I saw (tight end) Eddy Whitley open.

"That was the freshman in me doing something I knew I shouldn't have done. My mistakes cost us. in a couple weeks, we'll be glad we played Nebraska close instead of getting biown out like everyone thought we would. But right now, it's bod. I feel terrible." Offensive line coach Carl Selmer "I'm not going to contradict what coach Dickey said, but unless Nebraska's 1971 defensive team has deteriorated, I still think that was the best I've seen.

Just look at the records and see who scared them. I think the only one was Oklahoma. "This defense is good, but you've got to remember that 71 defense had a Glover, a Jacobson and a Harper. And Monte Johnson was iust a sub. I'm pretty partial to that defense.

"Nebraska has a good, hard, ogresslve defense. But I thought our defense played pretty well today too. You've got to admire our defense. They played without three original secondary starters, without three defensive tackles and without two linebackers. You can't play much harder than they did." Defensive end James Walker "We knew what we would have to do to stop them.

We had to defense their traps and sweeps. We played hard against the best rushing team In the country. But you have to give them credit. They hung in there and came back to score when they had to." Linebacker Vic Koenning "I think Nebraska's offense Is set up so that the backside linebacker is in position to make a lot of tackles, if the defensive line or corners take out the lead blockers. "That's how I got so many (15) today.

We may not hove huge linemen and super speed backs. But we make up for it with emotion and hard play." Flanker Phil Pickard "Our defense shut Nebraska down. I iust wish our offense could toke back a couple of plays. Nebraska played good enough to win, but we should have beaten them because we ployed better." 1 T5f3ti Tim Smith (84) grate one of his four pass receptions as KSU defender Phil Switzer I l' I 11 ff 8es down.
