THE INDIANAPOLIS NEWS Friday, May 23 Page 34 Betty Couldn't Resist Johnny's 'Wave, Wink' rTTTT 7H By BARBARA HEMBREE "A wave and a wink" and two months later they were married! Betty Rutherford, wife of last year's 500 winner, related her whirl wind romance with Johnny. "I am a graduate of Methodist Hospital School of Nursing," Betty began her story. "I was a nurse here at the track. I've always loved the race. "So, whenever I could leave the hospital to watch practice, or qualifications, I would.

This is when I met Johnny, he was taking his rookie test, he was a big flirt, you know. He waved and winked, and climbed into his car, I thought that was all there was to it. "Later he came back to the hospital area and asked me out. It all happened very quickly. We were both old enough to know our own minds, and two months later I became Mrs.

Johnny Rutherford." Then Betty's story took on a more serious note. "I really love racing, I guess it always was a part of Johnny, and now we share it. like other wives of race drivers, worry, but you just can't dwell on what might happen. If you did, you would go crazy, "I always tell everyone, I don't worry until I have something to worry about. We really have a very special marriage.

We seldom argue. I know when Johnny is tense, or worried himself. I know, too, that this is the time not to bother him." Winning last year's Yace was a moment that Betty won't forget. She was score-, keeper for Johnny and was right there when Johnny pulled into Victory Lane. I guess it is like anything special that happens in a person's life, you just can't explain it.

When asked if her life style had changed much since last year's victory, Betty remarked, "We do a lot more traveling now, and of course the demands on Johnny's time are more, too. People expect more of him. My life style still consists of cooking, and cleaning, and caring for our two children, Johnny and Angelia. "Angelia is still a bit young to sit still for the race so she will stay with grandma, but Johnny 7, will join us here for the race, he loves racing, too." In comparing the various races that Johnny participates in, Betty had these feelings about the 500: "I always enjoy the festivities around the race here. Of course, I am from Indiana, too.

If anything were changed about the 500 it wouldn't seem like'May. However, I wouldn't want the other races to be so time The 500 is special for many reasons, the tradition, the prestige and, of course, the money," As race day draws near Betty feels some of the tension start to build in Johnny. "He begins to become very quiet" she "Our routine 't change much. We don't follow any special pattern even on race day. "We a 1 1 get to the track around 8 or 8:30.

Johnny goes and checks his car and sees his crew. He changes clothes, and that's about it until race time. As he climbs into his car and I take my seat in the pits and get ready to keep score, we both say our own private prayer for a safe race." Betty was asked if she knew who was going to win the race this year. She looked up from her score pad and remarked with a grin, "If I knew the answer to that, I could make a lot of money!"
