Betty Rutherford, wife of last year's 500 winner, related her whirl wind romance with Johnny. "I am a graduate of Methodist Hospital School of Nursing," Betty began her story. "I was a nurse here at the track. I've always loved the race. "So, whenever I could leave the hospital to watch practice, or qualifications, I would.

"Later he came back to the hospital area and asked me out. It all happened very quickly. We were both old enough to know our own minds, and two months later I became Mrs.

Johnny Rutherford." Then Betty's story took on a more serious note. "I really love racing, I guess it always was a part of Johnny, and now we share it. like other wives of race drivers, worry, but you just can't dwell on what might happen. If you did, you would go crazy, "I always tell everyone, I don't worry until I have something to worry about. We really have a very special marriage.

We seldom argue. I know when Johnny is tense, or worried himself. I know, too, that this is the time not to bother him." Winning last year's Yace was a moment that Betty won't forget.
