JOURNAL 11 9 Nil T7" KiimibalL Gamble set for game 11 111 i. iii mi uai iff? -3 I 'I 4 I i 2v Y- I was too small He said they can make a tall player better, but they can't make a good player taller." Kimball was recruited by UCLA. "But with Bobby playing at Oklahoma, I was always more interested in the Orange Bowl than the Rose BowL" he said. For Gamble, it was different.

"We lived about an hour from the Rose Bowl and I went there twice when I was a little kid," he recalled. Those memories were precious and they never lost impact "It was important for me to play" in the Shrine game," Gamble said. "But I've always wanted to play a college game in the Rose the grand daddy of them all "I know it isn't THE Rose Bowl game," Gamble said. "But it's against the Rose Bowl champion and it's on their home turf." The Bruins own a 10-1-2 record in the Rose Bowl since 1982 and two California receivers are hoping to help end that domination. "This game is the big test for us," Kimball said.

"We don't have the Ro-ziers, Fryars or Gills. But we've pulled together like a team and I think we're going to show it against UCLA." By Randy York i Assistant Sports Editor 7 PASADENA Just when you're convinced top-ranked Nebraska lives strictly by the run, two Husker split ends admit they're California Scott Kimball and Jason Gamble wait to play eighth-ranked UCLA in the Rose Bowl They can't wait to show the Bruins the Huskers have other guns and can travel other ways. CBS-TV may be aware of these two California receivers dressed in Nebraska uniforms for a 2:30 p.m. nation- ally-televised kickoff. But few Bruin fans in a crowd estimated to reach 75,000 probably are aware that Kimball and Gamble already have played in the JloseBowL Kimball, a 6-0, 195-pound senior jstarter from Camarillo, remembers catching six passes for "more than 100 yards" in the 1980 California high school Shrine game before 32,000 fans in the Rose BowL Gamble, a 5-11, 175-pound second-year freshman from Santa Barbara, recalls catching seven passes for 78 yards in the 1983 Shrine game "before 35,000 to 40,000 in the Rose BowL" Naturally, both Califomians realize the airwaves won't be nearly as busy for them Saturday.

But that doesn't diminish the thrill of their respective homecomings; "I played a lot against UCLA last year," Kimball said. "But this game's a little more important because it's like a Jiome game for me. live 45 minutes north of Pasadena and more than 150 people are coming to the game from my hometown," Kimball pointed out. "I don't know if they'll all be dressed in red. But I know they'll be pulling for me." Gamble is also guaranteed a private cheering section.

"About 30 people are coming from the Friendship Baptist Church in Santa Barbara," he said. "And I've got some cousins driving up in a van. So maybe they'll help get our red wave going in Gamble, who shares Nebraska's sec ond-team split end duties with sophomore Robb Schnitzler, admits he has a personal motive to play well in Saturday's showdown. "UCLA has a couple defensive backs I played against in high school," he said. "Dennis Price and Chuckie Miller were both Ail-Americans for Long Beach Poly when I played against them in high school." Price, a second-year freshman, starts at safely for the Bruins.

"We got sort of a grudge going in high school," offered Gamble. "When I was a junior, his team beat us in the CIF semifinals. Then his team beat us in the Shrine game. I caught a lot of balls against him. But I've never scored a touchdown against him." Gamble, the second fastest player on the team behind I-back Paul Miles, likes the end zone.

When he was named Most Valuable Player of the Northern California sectional all-star game, he turned three of his seven catches into touchdowns. This season, Kimball and Gamble are considered dangerous weapons buried amidst the image of Nebraska's powerful running game. Kimball has caught only three passes for 40 yards. Gamble has snagged only two for 31 yards. Neither is disappointed.

Neither is complaining. "My brother, Bobby, was a starting split end for Oklahoma (until 1978)," Kimball pointed out "I talked to him this week and we still joke about catching balls in the Big Eight. "You're not going to see 12 balls a game like you're going to see at BYU Kimball acknowledged. "But catching one ball at Nebraska and hearing that that's as good as catching 10 balls anywhere else." Although Gamble has not reached the full measure of that philosophical conclusion, he knows one catch would be meaningful against UCLA. "UCLA never really did recruit me," he said.

"I got tickets to a game and visited their locker room. But one of their coaches told my high school coach STAFF PHOTO BY RANDY HAMPTON Scott Kimball (left) and Jason Gamble. "We still have a problem of falling just a little short, like coming back all that way in the first game and still losing. And we have some other problems right now that we're playing through, but the signs of improvement are there." At East, senior Julie Vermeer scored nine ace spikes and teammate Julie McMahon tallied three more in the third game to lead the Spartan net attack against Southeast. Renee Elefsrud and Holly Tropp See SPIKERS on page 13 ReaP season just beginning for Padres WWMWMWWi lift ft By Ken Hambleton Journal Prep Writer Norris' volleyball team finally broke the ratings jinx, overcoming Lincoln Pius to post a 16-14, 15-9 victory before a crowd estimated at 350 Thursday night at the Pius gym. In other games in Lincoln Thursday, No. 9-rated Lincoln East ended its three-game losing string with a 4-15, 15-10, 15-3 decision over No.

8-ranked Southeast, while top-ranked Lincoln High downed Columbus, 16-14, 15-9. Norris jumped into the Class ratings this week at the fifth spot after winning the Queen City Invitational in Beatrice last weekend "I think that every time we've either shown up in the ratings or moved up in the ratings, we always follow it with a loss," Norris Coach Karen Schlueter said. "I was worried about that again tonight because we've never come through before. "Add to that jinx the fact that Pius can cause a team a lot of problems because they're so unorthodox and scrappy on defense," Schlueter said. Norris pulled away from a 3-3 tie in the first game and took a 14-7 lead after ace spikes by Kay Rademaker and Beth DeBoer, plus scoring soft hits by Becky Mitchell, Rademaker and Renee Mosi-man.

But the Thunderbolts, now 2-6, held on for 10 sideouts. With a scoring block by Anne Daddario, who also slammed four ace spikes, and two dinks by Joan Kelley, the 'Bolts tied the game at 14-all. The two teams battled through seven more sideouts before DeBoer scored on a service ace to end the game. The Titans took an early lead in the second set, but Pius rallied to tie the game at 9-9, before DeBoer scored on two ace serves and teammate Mitchell slammed two ace spikes to end the match. ''Ever since we won our first game last week (against previously unbeaten Raymond Central) we've been a different team," Pius Coach Kathy Bren-nan said.

"We've always been strong on defense, but we're starting to gain some confidence in our offense now. "We have some momentum, although you donwant to peak too late and you don't want to peak too early," San Diego Manager Dick Williams said Thursday after the Padres clinched a berth in the NL Championship Series with a 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The Padres' victory and Los Angeles' 6-2 triumph over second-place Houston gave San Diego a 10-game lead with 10 games remaining. Added relief ace Rich Gossage: "It's a game of mountains and valleys, and when you're sitting on top of a mountain, it feels pretty good.

But we're only part of the way up." In other games Thursday, the downtrodden Pittsburgh Pirates beat East Division leader Chicago 7-6, Atlanta ripped Cincinnati 9-3 and St. Louis got by Montreal 3-2. In the American League, California moved within a naif-game in the American League West of division-leading Kansas City with a 2-0 victory over the Royals. In other games, Baltimore routed Boston 15-1, and Toronto defeated Milwaukee 6-4. Williams, who managed Boston to an American League pennant in 1967 and won world championships with the Oakland A's in 1972-73, reveled in his latest success.

"Believe me, gentlemen, it's a great feeling," he said. "I'm 10 (actually 11) years older than I was the last time this happened. You can never have enough of this." Among the keys to San Diego's title drive were former New York Yankees Gossage and Graig Nettles and former Dodger Steve Garvey. The trio tangled in three World Series, with the Yanks winning in 1977 and 1978 and Garvey's Dodgers prevailing in 1981. "At the beginning of the season, I didn't know what to think," Nettles said of the Padres' prospects.

"But after a while, I realized we were good enough to play wit anyone in our division. Not to be a pessimist, but even if we lost in the playoffs, this would be a very successful seasoa" "You look at our team," Gossage added, "and we're not high in any of the statistics, but we do everything well just enough to win." "This is as special as any of them," said Garvey, who played in four World Series for Los Angeles, "because it's the first time the Padres have won. It feels great." San Diego scored all its runs in the second inning off Giant starter Mike Krukow, 10-12, with the key hits Garry Templeton's two-run single and a three-run homer by Padres starter Tim Lol-lar, 11-12. It was Lollar's third homer of the year. Nettles lead off the inning with a single, Kevin McReynolds walked and Car-mello Martinez was hit by a pitch to load the bases Templeton then drilled a two-run single to left, and Lollar followed with his blast over the rightfield walL Lollar, who went 5 1-3 innings, surrendered an RBI single to Manny Trillo and a sacrifice fly to Jeff Leonard in the third.

John Rabb stroked his third homer of the year in the fourth. Dave Dravecky, who gained his eighth save, allowed the final Giant run on Chili Davis' single in the ninth. Pirates 7, Cubs 6 Johnny Ray's eighth-inning sacrifice fly broke a tie and gave the Pirates a three-game sweep over the Cubs. The result kept Chicago's magic number for clinching the National League Eastern Division title at three. Any combination of Chicago victories and New York Met losses totaling three would advance the Cubs into postseason play for the first time since 1945.
