So far, Wallace feels all the omens are good. "Everything is coming along real well" with his training, he says. That's not good news for Brown and the other championship contenders in the expected field of 1,000 runners. Spinks TKOs foe in eighth SAN CARLOS, Calif.

(UPI) Former World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Leon Spinks sent Kevin Isaac to the canvas with a flurry of punches Saturday for an eighth-round knockout in their scheduled 10-rounder. Referee Rudy Ortega stopped the bout at 2:11 of the eighth round when Isaac began walking toward his corner. Spinks, 204, took the initative froni the beginning and never let tip on the Brooklyn, N.Y, boxer. 'The three officials had Spinks well in front when the bout ended. Ortega had the former champion leading 69-65 and judges Hank Elesturu and Jack Downey had Spinks leading 69-64.

Spinks advanced his professional record to 9-2-2. Isaac, fighting only occasionally since 1973, saw his record fall to 12-7-2. He ran the Diet Pepsi race under "friendly'' conditions with Lincoln's Cliff Karthaus-er. Neither man attempted to turn on the heat and crossed the finish line together by agreement. "It was a good sharpening workout, and coming two weeks before the Lincoln race it was at a good time," Wallace says. "I could have run it faster, however, and I'm sure (Jliff could have, too." Two weeks ago the Melbourne native won University half marathon with an impressive 65:16, a pace of just slightly over Jive minutes a mile. Wallace has been averaging about 120 miles "for quite a few weeks" and wont tapir off until early the week of the race.

A graduate of Texas El-Paso, Wallace was the Western Athletic Conference's 3-mile and steeplechase champion in 1974, and was an NCAA Ail-American in the 6-mile run that same year. He went back to Australia after graduation, coming in second in the Australian Olympic trials in 1976, winning that country's marathon championship in 1977 in a time of 2:20:11 and the Victorian Marathon Club's championship in 1978 in a time of 2:21:17. So in three tries, Wallace's worst marathon finish has been second. In August of 1978 he moved to Omaha so that his wife, Gayle, a Council Bluffs native, could attend the University of Nebraska School of Nursing. Wallace is hoping to have two reasons to celebrate on May 11 since his brother is due Staff Sport Writer While Omahan Bob Wallace has been established as the early fatorite for the third annual Lincoln Marathon scheduled for May 11, he hardly feels like the race locked up.

In fact, ke knows exactly from what direction at least one challenge is coming and it's all part of the so-called "foreign which threatens to dominaU the event Texasfel Paso graduate student Larry Brown, a Canadian, is the No. 2-rated runner in the field. a former teammate of Wallace on the UTEP track squad. "We're very comparable," says transplanted Australian Wallace, ixplaining that in the 3-mile aid 6-mile competition between the two men as teammates, they were usually each other. While there are a lot of variables to consider in comparing similar races run at different sites and under varying conditions, it's obvious that a check of times supports Wallace's contention.

For instance, his best time in the marathon is 2:17:33 in the 1976 Australian Olympic trials while Brown has a best of 2:20:03. Wallace was a co-winner of the Diet Pepsi 10K (6.2 miles) race held at Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs last weekend with a time of 30:48 while Brown won the recent Capitol 10K at Austin, Texas, in a time of 30:47. Frey, a righthander, is 2-0 and was backed up by eight hits. The reserves upped their record to 54.

Bob Wallace best time of 2:25:11. Still, there's nothing in Wallace's distant or recent past to indicate he shouldn't wear the number "1" on his jersey which designates the marathon favorite.
