XTTDBA IPdDIIKfTP. Lincoln Journal Star Friday, Nov. 4, 1988 23 Veteran glad he stayed at Iowa State middle linebacker Cornhusker opponent 4 ByKenHambleton The season that almost wasn't has been better than Mike Shane could ever dream of. 1 "I'm glad I came back. I'm having fun.

Football is fun at Iowa State again," the ISU middle linebacker said. "We've turned things around defensively. It's not a matter of 'Oh, no, we've got to go out on the field again? Now, Shane and the rest of the Cyclone defense look forward to every moment on the field. It's quite a change for Shane, who almost quit the team last August It wasn't the first time Shane had thought about quitting, but it was the first time he thought about havingta quit. In his two previous years, Shane considered leaving because of the coaching style of former ISU Coach Jim Criner.

This year, just before fall practices began, Shane's father Richard suffered a heart attack. Shane returned home to Indi- ana to help with the family tire business. 7 He was going to stay until his father and mother talked him into going back to school Two days after his return, Shane lined up against Tulane for the season opener. Iowa State won; Shane collected 19 tackles and was named the Big Eight Defensive Player of the Week, The next week against Iowa, he had 14 tackles. Shane never let up and was named Big Eight defensive player of the week again for 19 tackles, three fumble recoveries and an overall strong performance in ISU's victory over Missouri He is the first Iowa State player to be named defensive player of the week twice in a season.

Against Colorado last week, Shane had 15 tackles and a quarterback sack. For the season, he has a team-best 108 tack-, les including 60 solos three pass breakups, three fumbles caused and one interception. All that while missing the Oklahoma game because of an injury. "I'm glad my folks talked me into coming back," Shane said. "My father is doing better and my folks have made it out to a couple of games.

Things are looking better back home." Things are also looking better for Shane at Iowa State. "I thought about staying home and not coming back two years ago, when Jint Criner was the coach here. It wasn't fun and there was so much pressure on every little thing you do," Shane said. "If you walked around campus, the last thing you "told anybody was that you played football at Iowa State. That was the quickest way to end a conversation I can think of," he said.

Iowa State fired Criner and hired former Washington State head Coach Jim Walden two years ago. The change in coaches wasn't an immediate cure. "We were terrible on defense last year," Shane said Too many inconsistencies and too many mistakes. We were 103rd in the country in defense. But we've worked to improve and we're a whole lot better on defense now." Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said the Iowa State defense' has improved tremendously.

Missouri Coach Woody Widen-- hofer1 would agree after the Cyclones stopped the Tigers from scoring on six drives inside the Iowa State 15-yard line. Shane was partially responsible for ISU's 21-3 victory, recovering two fumbles inside the ISU 5-yard line. This week, Shane faces his toughest test of the year against Nebraska. But he appreciates the challenge. "Nebraska is great always great and always will be.

We have no pressure in this game because we have nothing to lose," he said. "We're looking for an upset Coach Walden told the press we don't stand a chance, but we know we do. That's why we're playing the game. "That's the change in attitude and results here at Iowa State. We've got a defense that works.

Our defensive line is to the point where I can nam free and be more effective as a middle linebacker." The system has helped Iowa State move to 63rd in the country in total defense. The Cyclones are fourth in the Big Eight and 38th nationally in scoring defense. They are second in the conference in passing defense, behind Nebraska. "I'm sure Steve Taylor and Ken Clark don't care about those stats," Shane said. "They'll come at us with all their and strength.

Wei just give it our best shot" Journol'Stor library Iowa State middle linebacker Mike Shane (45) watches from the sideline during Nebraska's 42-3 victory over the Cyclones last year in Lincoln. By Herschel Nissenson Associated Press Barry Switzer won't be the' most talked-about Barry S. in Stillwater, Okla, on Saturday. Oklahoma's coach, whose 16-year winning percentage of .844 is the best among active coaches, will have to play second-fiddle to Oklahoma State tailback Barry Sanders, who leads the nation in rushing, all-purpose running and scoring. With 1,476 yards following last week's school-record 320-yard effort against Kansas State, Sanders is 672 short of Mike Rozier's Big Eight mark and 866 shy of Marcus Allen's NCAA record. Sanders has four games remaining.

Ham hocks college picks Big Eight games By Ken Hambleton (Picks in boldface) Nebraska at lows State (-35) Iowa State has a much improved defense and a growing offense but simply not the size and strength to match Nebraska, which wants to make up for last week's narrow win over Missouri. Look for the Huskers to get back on a 600-yard total offense pace and set up tough final games with Colorado and Oklahoma. Nebraska should be ready and confident. Oklahoma at Oklahoma State (-1) Upset here, finally a big-time win for the Cowboys over Oklahoma, which hasn't lost a conference game since a loss to Kansas eons ago. Barry Sanders should be the Heisman Trophy winner and will prove it here against a weakened OU defense.

The problem Is, OSU's defense stinks, and the Sooners will score a bundle, too. OU has only seven starters who were pegged as starters in the preseason actually starting this game. The key here is OSU not losing turnovers and the defense keeping Sooners from less than 60 points. If that happens, the Cowboys should win. Colorado at Missouri (-1) Why not stick with the upsets.

Missouri may have gotten enough confidence from sticking with Nebraska that it will make a difference. Colorado has only been playing well enough to win and lust not quite good enough to beat Oklahoma. If Colorado can be kept on defense the ma-iority of the game, Missouri hos a chance for on upset. Plus, the Buffs may be looking ahead to match with Nebraska. Kansas State (-1) at Kansas Somebody has to win this.

Oops, they tied last year. But Kansas State actually seems to have an offense as shown with 27-' point outburst against Oklahoma State. Kansas may actually have a defense, but the edge goes to the Wildcats. This is the game everybody in the country wants to see. It's like watching a train wreck.

The problem is, neither team has been on the trcicks for three years. Ham's Hocks are 29-19 against his spread his year and 41-7 In picking the winners. You can toss a coin and tie the Ham Hocks, who went 2-2 against the spread for the third straight week. HarrahV odds AP Top Twenty 1. Notre Dame 33 over Rice 2.
