Star Comhuskers leave impression on Utah State quarterback with 56-12 whipping in '87 w-w mm j. mnypyntimiii n.u mmm it iwiiiihiil mimu mm The fact the Aggies return top receiv Cornhusker opponent IB iff ByKenHambleton One ot the benefits of earning a starting position for a college football team is meeting other players. "I got to meet some of the best last year," said Brent Snyder, who was named starting quarterback for Utah State just before the season opener with Nebraska last year.

"I guess you could say I got to meet Nell Smith, Tim Rother and Broderick Thomas and a lot of the big names in college football right away." Snyder said. He got to meet the artificial turf at Memorial Stadium for eight sacks and at least a dozen more times when he was hit just after be passed. A few more of his passes were shortened by pressure from the Nebraska defensive line and defensive backfield in the 56-12 Corn-busker massacre. "We were so limited in our offense," Snyder said. HI was new, most of the offense was new.

We walked into Memorial Stadium and said, "Nebraska threw a bunch of defensive line stunts that we had never seen. We knew we'd get heat from their defense, and we knew we weren't going to be the only ones. We were just the first" That was 11 games, a full spring of practices and three weeks of late summer workouts ago. Since the season opening loss to Nebraska, Utah State has gained a lot of respect because of the Aggies' successes. Snyder led Utah State to wins in five ers Kendal Smith and Patrick Newman and the Interior of the offensive line make Snyder more comfortable, too.

The experience of last year's season has helped Improve the Aggies pass protection and potential, also, Snyder said. "Playing at Nebraska is a plus for us," he said. "We can get our name in the papers, and people will notice. Nebraska is a classy team and one of the best coached teams around. We can measure ourselves against the best "We're not playing to do weE We're playing to win.

It will take a perfect game from us and a few mistakes from them. It's up to us and we have a Snyder, who transferred from Northern Illinois to Diablo Valley Junior College before Utah State, said the fact that Utah State has played Nebraska before will help. "They are Nebraska, Nebraska, Nebraska," Snyder said. "It doesnt change much there. They dont have to change.

They have great people and a great team. But they aren't going to fool, around with a bunch of new stuff for us, and we just have to be ready for it this "You know they wont slough off because they had Texas last week and have UCLA next week. They get better each week. Just look at their team last year after they played us." "But we Improved a lot, too. WeH see how much this weekend." of their last six games.

This season, many publications are picking Snyder to be one of the quarterbacks with a possible NFL future and the Aggies as the pre-season favorite in the new Big West Conference (formerly the Pacific Coast Athletic Association). Snyder passed his way to sixth in the nation in total offense last season. He be-, came the first Aggie quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards in four straight games. "Everything came together when we played our fifth game last year," said Snyder. "We lost on a strange last-second decision at Nevada-Las Vegas.

They took a touchdown away from us, but we knew we had played welL "The next week we finally won. And we kept winning." The senior quarterback said the caiy ryover from game-to-game and through the spring and this fall should help. "We're progressing quicker because we have that experience and confidence," he said. "Last year, when we played Nebraska, we didnt have that much we could do. We were limited, and Nebraska limited us some more.

"This year is different I didnt have to scratch and kick my way to getting a starting job, and now even I can enjoy football." Florida State missed a two-point conversion in the final minutes, and the Hurrlcones went on to a 12-0 season and national championship. This year, Miami Is ranked No. 6 going Into the game.

NFL Sunday Miami at Chicago TV: NBC (Channel 6) Series record: Miami leads series 44. Only one other game was played In Chicago, In 1975. Notts: Bears have won four straight Ham hocks college picks ByKenHambleton (Picks In boldface) Utah State at Nebraska (-35) This could be a lot closer than many people think.

Utah State's Brent. Snyder presents a passer In the caliber of Eric Hip. pie, who brought Utah State to a 21-14 deficit in the fourth quarter in the game with the Comhuskers In 1979. But Utah State's defense isn't even as good as last year's that gave up 56 points to NU. Comhuskers should be rolling after opening win, and the only thing that'll keep the score down is the use of NU'S fourth and fifth stringers.

Kansas State at Tulsa (-12) Kansas State Is 20-20 in season openers since World War II. Since the Civil War, they ore the worst, maior college football team in the nation. But who knows, maybe K-State will get a win this year. They've tried passing, running and now bock to passing under Coach Stan Par rlsh. Tulsa Is down this year, and there may be on opening for the Wildcats.

Florida State (-1) at Miami (-1) This should be a vear-ender, because It matches last year's No. 1 with this year's No. 1. But TV rules all. The edge goes to the Semlnoles, who need this win to get ready for road game at Clemson In a couple of weeks.

Florida State should have won last year and has an edge on Miami at olmost every position, but the Hurricanes are home. Texas A8.M at LSU (-7) -r Texas Is not as good as it wasa week ago when the Aggies lost to Nebraska. The reason Is Iniuries have sidelined receiver Rod Harris, halfback Darrln Lewis and possibly three other starters. LSU is counting on QB Tommy Hodson, who can deliver the Tigers to big wins any time. Harrah's college odds Top20 1.
