IPCDUEOT A lib Lincoln Journal Star Friday, Oct, 20, 1959 7 OSU quarterback Gundy adjusting to new supporting cast XX 'i -I- 7 K- i- xcv.v i' 'f passer in the country last year. "I've had to work harder," be said. "I have to hit the receivers on the numbers instead of just throwing it up there, and I've had to scramble more than In the past "I can go through practice blindfolded, because I've had so many repetitions since my freshman year, But I have to concentrate on everything I do, because we have so many new people, and we've got such a long ways to go this year Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said Gundy is sUQ one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the country. "Nobody Is as experienced quarter' back as he is and nobody is as hard to pen up and bring down as he is," Osborne said. "I believe for that reason and others, that Oklahoma State will be the best team we've played this year." Gundy said he hopes to live up to that billing.

"Nebraska is the only team we've never had a chance against aa long as Pve been here," he said. "They took us out early last year in that crazy 6342 game. The year before they drilled us and stopped just about everything (354), and my freshman year, we had too many mistakes (NU won J0-10). "Osborne and Nebraska are the best in the country at getting a lead and stomping a team flat We need to stay in the game to have a chance this time," mistakes, But we're 2-4 now, and we learned we can do it" Gundy has never worked this hard for win in his life. -The Oklahoma State senior quarter back has had better years, The Cowboys won 10 games and went to a bowl game each of the last two years.

The Cowboys had the "triplets" of Gundy, AO-American receiver Hart Lee Dykes and Heisman Trophy winning tailback Barry Sanders, rolling up the nation's best in scoring (47.5 points) and 515.18 yards a game last year. But Dykes and Sanders are in the pros, and the 1988 of fensive line completed its eligibility. "Now, I wouldn't blame much less Nebraska, for overlooking us this year," Gundy said, "We were a big threat the last couple of years. This year, I cant fault anybody for thinking we're not the team we were the last pie of years, Because we're not." Gundy said patience and rebuilding' have come easily this season. year and the year before, we did pretty much what we wanted to do on offense.

If we needed a touchdown we usually got it," he said. "Now, the receivers may not be In the clear the way Hart Lee was. Our backs dont have the boles and cant break the tackles the way Sanders could I can only do what I can do." Gundy's statistics show a considerable drop from his ranking as No, 2 r-. ByKenHambletoiT It would have been better for Mike Gundy If Oklahoma State hadnt needed him in the final minutes of last week's game. But the Cowboys were struggling, and i Kansas State had them on the ropes with less than 10 minutes remaining.

I OSU Coach Pat Jones asked Gundy if he was ready to go in. And as he has done for 28 times since his first game as I freshman, Gundy sparked the Cowboys to winning touchdown. "I would be better off physically if I hadn't played and just rested my knee," Gundy said. "But they needed me. I wasn't feeling that bad, and I wanted to play." That was an it took.

Gundy hit all eight of his passes, Including a ltyard touchdown pass to Brent Parker with 1:37 left, to beat Kansas State. The Cow. boys would have had another touchdown but lost a fumble at the Wildcats' two on Gundy's first drive. "That drive did a lot for me and for the team," said Gundy, who has six Big Eight records and needs 73 yards to pick up the Big Eight career total offense record from former Missouri quarterback Phil Bradley. "As Coach Jones said, driving 91 yards against air is tough.

You have to keep your composure, avoid penalties, turnovers and every other kind of mistake, It's tough to do that without some JK" x' 1 ft Probable starters 1 -I If iiiilifiilili-i OFFENSE NEBRASKA OKLAHOMA STATE (2-4, 1-1) No. Player Ht. Wt. Yr. Pos, No.
