"We ran a lot of blitzes to offset their passing attack," Pillen said. "I know I got to the quarterback (Manucci) a couple of times, and I was right in his face when he let the ball go a couple of others. "Our blitz was really working well because our down linemen were running their stunts so well," he said. On about every play, the North Platte junior would line head-up on the center in his three-point stance, his left hand flexing in anticipation of the snap. When the ball was centered, the Rotate offensive linemen would grab at Weinmaster, double team him, and even try to tackle him to stay him from his appointed rounds. "When we play against a team with so many different sets, it puts a little added pressure on my shoulders; it became a mind game for me," Pillen said.

And most of the time he outguessed Manucci and the Kansas State strategists. "I thought it was a good challenge for our secondary, playing a (passing) team like this," Pillen said. "It seems like we haven't done much in the secondary this year, and we looked forward to this game. "We wanted to do a little contributing, and I think we did," he said. "We needed a good test, and we got one today." In all, the Nebraska defense produced 14 behind-the-line tackles for 80 yards in losses recovered two fumbles, and intercepted two passes.

Tackle Rod Horn had chances for two other interceptions but couldn't hang on to either one. "My hands were too taped up," he explained. "But I can't catch that good anyway. "Both (chances) were on screens, and the guy (Manucci) looked straight at me. I said, 'Throw and he threw it right to me I couldn't believe it.

"I had a clear path to the end zone on one, but I couldn't catch the stupid thing," Horn said.
