Livingston anticipates doing good business immediately at the new theaters and not just because of the star-filled product they will be offering. "Lincoln has created a screen shortage in the suburbs by city law," Livingston sail "I cant imagine there's anything but a need here." The decision to build the theaters at Edgewood was a simple one for Douglas prospect of competing with still-popular standards from decades, even centuries, ago mean that few artists even try to write new holiday standards today. "If you're going to write a whole bunch of new Christmas carols, who cares?" said Nebraska composer Chip Davis. Davis, who records as a one-man band under the name Mannheim Steamroller, is responsible for one of the few holiday music success stories of the 1980s. He records instrumental New Age versions of Christmas classics specifically intended for compact disc players.

Top sellers With record companies rereleasing classics by Crosby, the Carpenters, Theater Nebraska's largest movie exhibitor. In the early 1980s, the City Council approved a three-screen theater at the shopping center, but the project did not materialize. "When we had the opportunity to jump in oi) this, we did it immediately," Livingston said. "I think it's going to be an instant success." The Edgewood theaters, designed by Lincoln architect Michael Bott, had to fit within the city guidelines, which dictated the square footage of the building and seating capacity for the theaters. Despite concern of city officials about suburban movie houses, Livingston said Johnny Mathis and Phil Spector every year, it may be a surprise to learn that Davis' 1984 release "Mannheim Steamroller Christmas" and his 1988 recording "A Fresh Aire Christmas" were the two top-selling holiday albums last year.

It was a surprise for Davis. "I didnt really expect it to do anything because it was sort of a known thing that this sort of junk just croaks," said Davis, who was advised against recording holiday songs, of how Christmas music fares in the marketplace. "Christmas albums were pretty much considered death in the industry. If you did a Christmas album, it was like signing off." The Mannheim Steamroller records wed the old and new in a combination ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The tinsel is on the tree, the eggnog is poured and the yule log aglow.

All you need is something on the stereo to complete that holiday mood. There's always Bing Crosby's time-honored "White Christmas." Nat King Cole's voice remains forever strong on "The Christmas Song." Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas" still tugs at hearts. If you're thinking they dont make them like they used to, you're right "It's been a long time since something's come along that's become a das-' sic," said Joel Whitburn, whose Record Research Inc. of Milwaukee monitors what's hot and what's not in the music world. Money pressures and the daunting RANOY HAMPTONLINCOLN JOURNAL he does not think the Edgewood complex will have a negative impact on Lincoln's downtown theaters.

"As I said when we opened East Park, I honestly believe we're tapping a new market here," Livingston said. "We're going to get people who either dont go to theaters now or dont go as frequently as they will when this is opea" With the opening of all three auditoriums, Douglas Theater Co. will operate the most screens in Lincoln with nine, including three at East Park Plaza and the Douglas 3 theaters downtown. United Artists now operates eight screens in the city. GiHstmas perfect for listeners too old for rock 'n' roll novelty records and too young for Lawrence Welk Orchestras, synthesizers and electric guitars are used in instrumental versions of classics and a few new compositions.

Big sales expected Davis' records, along with George Winston's "December" album on Windham Hill Records, are expected to be hot sellers again this year. "It has a broad appeal," said Geoff May field, associate research director for Billboard magazine. "If you like traditional Christmas music, that's what it's about, but it's presented in a new way. People with gray hair can like it And if you're a kid, you can sit through it, and it doesn't have to sound like Mitch Miller' Holiday records have always been a SUTTER PLACE MALL 48th Street Holiday Gift Ideas Christian Dior Natori Sleepwear Beautiful robe gown sets, pajamas, bath robes slippers A perfect holiday indulgence. strange stepchild of the music industry.

Artists compete during a compressed time period to sell music to be heard in the background at a few parties, then tossed into closets for 11 months. This kind of high-risk, low-return work makes many songwriters run in the other direction. "Your ego gets stepped on," Davis said. "They're probably some of the most difficult types of songs to write and have catch on because there's such an established litany of old material that people are fond of," said David McLees, artists and repertoire coordinator for Rhino Records. All-time champ The all-time champ of the modern era is Irving Berlin's composition of "White Christmas," heard first in the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn."
